What Computer Set up Do I Need to Run 6 Screens?

Hi All,

I'm looking at the best way to get set up with a desktop PC that can run 6 Dell P2417H screens.

The computer is going to be used for day trading and a fair bit of excel but nothing else.

I was looking at building the computer through Mwave but I wanted to know what the minimum requirements would be in terms of things like video cards, RAM, CPU processor, Motherboard, etc.

Any information or suggested builds are much appreciated.

This is built I'm currently looking at -

PC Case - Fractal Design Define R5 Mid-Tower ATX Case - Black
CPU Processor - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X 8 Core Socket AM4 3.6GHz CPU Processor + Wraith Prism Cooler
Motherboard - ASUS ROG Strix X570-E Gaming AM4 ATX Motherboard
Memory(s) - Corsair Dominator Platinum RGB 32GB (2x 16GB) DDR4 3200MHz Memory - Black
Hard Drive(s) - Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB NVMe 1.3 M.2 (2280) 3-Bit V-NAND SSD - MZ-V7S500BW
Power Supply - Corsair RM750x 750W 80 Plus V2 Gold Fully Modular ATX Power Supply
Video Card(s) - 2 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1660 OC 6GB Video Card
Operating System - Microsoft Windows 10 Home 32bit/64bit - Digital Download

Total Price - $3,398.97 including Assembly and Testing Service

Cheers,
Chris

    I use this for 4 high res screens (2xWUXGAs, 1x4k, 1x2k)…

Bought off ebay second hand. You don't want to be paying retail for Auadro/NVS cards, they have massive depreciation.

That has 4x DP sockets. But you may be able to daisy chain 4 of those 1080p monitors off 1 port depending on your card.

I run 5 monitors off an AMD firepro w9100 (with one port unused), but I wouldn't be if work hadn't paid for it.

Well, I had 7 Full HD going off 2 x 780Tis a year or so ago so I'd imagine you should be right with anything relatively recent with enough outputs
    Z87, 4790k

    • Thanks. Do you I need a certain motherboard for it as well?

I just had a Z-chipset - don't quote me but I'd believe any would be fine as long as it had 2 x PCIe slot of the appropriate speed.
Might need clarification from someone who has a more recent chipset with 4+ monitors and dual cards

  • Ah so jealous with the day trading
…. I wish I can do that instead of working…

    • +1

Haha!! Trust me after 3 months of it you'll be dreaming about going back to an office job… u

      • Nah I think I will be fine….

        • +2

It's NOT as easy as you may think and the boredom factor (of long hours of screen watching) can be high (and the there's the odd moment of terror LOL)……take it from someone who HATED the office.

        • That's what they all say. :) It is doable but give yourself a 5 year or so 'learning time', just like any other skill, you have to do your apprenticeship. And don't trade real money until your demo account has gone up for 3-4 months in a row.

          • @EightImmortals: agree paper trading is important also the money/risk management side ie to preserve our capital. i just need some push to start doing it (again). and learn the risk management more, and finding my own entry exit trigger formula…

  • I got my PC built by Computer Alliance specced to run the setup I had planned - sourced monitors and frame myself and assembled same……the build was excellent, the only thing that I'd change is to make sure all cables are easy to adjust - mine ended up so tightly bound and lengths so tailored as to be not easily adjusted (wanted to add extra drives and dual "mount" the power so as to have 2 drives being on one power cord. Make sure there is adequate leftover power in your power supply to power everything now and in the future. Also found my (huge) video card physically blocked off some bits I wanted to get at (eg motherboard connection port points (for later adding extra drives) and fans).

Have 6 same size/resolution screens (maybe "had", one died 4 months ago, not replaced, yes I miss it occasionally ….but not enough to get me off my tail and replace it) but this is "old" news as purchased 2-3 years ago so I won't go into the hardware (sorry) except to say the stand was designed to take 6 one model specific monitors so buying one meant I must buy the other. Used one video card. Don't game or video process.

Use WIN 7 Pro and that can handle 6 mons no problem - setup was a pain - getting monitors in correct order to support moving mouse/dragging from one to the next seamlessly (have as 3 pairs - 12, 34, 56) was difficult for some reason…I'm not very tech gifted so problem may be me or hardware/software, I just don't know. 16 GB is enough in the PC. Card has 2GB??

Get assembler to send you all the "leftover" bits that were issued by the gear suppliers - but not required for the install - from the installed gear when they send you the PC (or make sure they are there when you pick it up) as you may want some of them to change things in the future eg cables.

Make sure video card is easily controlled from desktop - eg in summer I up the card fan speed as heat in case is a problem…..how sensitive are you to fan noise? - something to consider….Mt PC memory may be slightly "cooked" from a couple of years ago so system is temperamental in summer.

Make sure you get a solid desk and frame - even with LCD's there is a lot of weight involved so you don't want everything to jiggle about at your every movement.

Make sure monitors are (relatively?) easily replaceable - now and in the future…that is one reason why I have left the "dead" one unreplaced.

    This was interesting

and this comment is oh so true "The only down side is that now when I have to use a regular 1 or even 2-monitor setup I get frustrated. "

you can run 6 screens on older 2nd hand hardware you don't need the latest greatest in store tech to get the same results if you're not using intensive software. Simply said, minimum i7 16gb ram for gen 4 and older intel stuff then get 1 gfx card with enough ports or run two to get enough ports for your monitors for proper effective use or you can just go down the path of using a hdmi switch or splitter with 1 gfx card. But yeah don't overthink it, if you consider the fact your average normal desktop at work is probably a 4th or 6th gen intel i5/i7 PC in a proprietary dell/hp motherboard with 16gb unbranded ram running some generic or lower end graphics card

Had a client once who was a young guy in his 30s. Had his front room set up for online horse betting all over the country and world. 6 screens. Did alright as we were paid in cash in brown paper bags. The good old days.

    • Epic! Much of the same principles between both.

      • He had a 3 bed Terrace in Nth Carlton here in Melb. Renovated for a new living and kitchen to the back. Had a massive sat dish in the small backyard to get all the races live. Only the front room and the second room had anything in it. He was always in the local Cafe shop having a coffee and looking at the form guide. Is your set up for full time trading?

I would want to set that many screens for a race sim.

        • Yeah it is for full time trading. I'm currently using 4 screens off a laptop so want to get set up with something more sustainable.

Spending way more than you need to.

    Ryzen 5 3400G or Ryzen 3 3200G
MSI Radeon RX 570 4 GB ARMOR OC
ASRock B450M Steel Legend AM4 mATX Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8 GB DDR4-2400
    SeaSonic FOCUS Gold 650 W 80+ Gold

1x HDMI + 1x DP from the motherboard, 1x HDMI + 3x DP from GPU for a total of 6 monitor display.

    • Thanks for the reply. Does it impact the perform much running from the motherboard? Or not for what I'm trying to do with it?

      • +2

Yep, not for what you're trying. No problem even if you want to use 4K displays.

        • Thanks, I don't if anything I prefer a lower resolution for what I use them for.

  • +1

We want pictures of set up when finished.

  • What sort of laptop spec would support four screens?
