I Suspect Neighbour Is Stealing My Electricity

I think either the builder ( or related site supplier) of my APT building or somebody who has intimate knowledge of my building electrical connections had been stealing my electricity.

Been living here for four years.. last year or two, I kept hearing most electrical switch boards clicking.. For one month in December, I used to periodically turn my main power switch off & noticed one neighbor coming out of their apt, head outside of the building then comes back in.. every single time! Believe it or not, my electricity bill, I saved $75 or so that particular month.

I am a female living alone with my daughter staying part time with me. I used to switch elec companies due to high usage when I am hardly home & only use energy saver globes & only fridge running constantly. Police cannot do anything without proof. The thief suspect lives opposite my apt, sharing ceiling space. Their address does not seem to appear registered as if it is vacant .. but families moved in & out may be privately rented out. Last year or so, the owner wanted to move back in & alerted the body corporate they are putting in new flooring in but after strange drilling in the ceiling, my ceiling now have draft wind & occasion movements.. I believe they made a man hole in their ceiling- they can easily roam or access my ceiling- all full of our electrical network lines.

How can stop them from stay connected to my electrical lines if they were confirmed thieves.. strata nor body corporate nor other neighbour are not cooperative nor caring to assist.. Would any electrician know how to detect when they look at my ceiling cavity?

Thanks

The "regular" bills are low already, the "small" bill is either likely to be seasonal variance or an error in OP's favour.

    • As mentioned above, this happened to me & some females, we suspected somebody may have installed hidden cameras… our bathroom mirror changed..?!? There were more strange happenings… we had no idea!!!!!!

too many trolls here, she stated she's alone with her child, most of them I know have very little knowledge on those stuffs. OP I suggest you get a properly electrician to check or if you suspect something, why don't you find out by get some (handy) friends to come and check with you. You can unplug EVERYTHING in your place and look at the meter.

  • +2

If you want to test out whether they are flipping on the main CB, get one of these:

    https://au.rs-online.com/web/p/lockouts/8625203

    https://www.cirlock.com.au/products-shopping/Circuit-Breaker…

Basically, switch off the circuit breaker then screw on the lockout on the switch and put a padlock through the hole to stop anyone switching it on. Sure, you can prob rip the lockout off, but at least you know someone is physically messing with you.

Pretend like you've got an electrician over or some other handyman over for some work that requires electrical isolation. 7pm "emergency works" sounds like a wonderfully inconvenient time for them to lose power.

    • poorman,
just noticed your post out of now hundreds it seems. I will check your suggestion out, thanks..
Have absolutely no idea where it goes or how it works.. I will get an electrician to fit one if able to access..

I will have to put this out there….

Nobody hacked your neighbours Arlo Camera. Someone smart enough to hack various systems through either 'actual' hacking or social engineering are not stealing $20-$50 of electricity per month (as your bills are low). They are working real jobs and getting more than that per hour.

There is a trillion ways to catch a thief in your own property, many of which were mentioned in this thread.

I recommend getting some real proof and stopping feeding your own insecurities, you're making this harder on your self and your family. Actions speak louder than words.

      • +5

Actually I'm tech savvy enough to know it's not that simple to hack an Arlo camera. Unless potentially they already have your Wifi password and that's not a hack then, that's just you needing to change your Wifi password. We aren't trying to be critical, we are trying to simplify things so that you take action - I personally hate seeing others stress.

    • dwinarto,
That was my initial question.. do electricians know what to look for .. if found to be connected to elsewhere, can they detach cords etc?!?!? Very simple question I asked..

      • They will know better than you and can properly advise. You on the other hand are doing a poor job at it.

      • Somebody told me, they will turn up to charge but they may not have a clue ..?!? Is that true?? I am tired of hearing cord dragging in my ceiling, as soon as I open my down lights to observe, it stops!! Then restarts overnights.. etc. Since I have been turning my main powers, more movements.. I think they are wondering why- not realizing I have been turning it off..?!?

        • +1

Why would they be constantly dragging cords around in your roof if they live in an opposite apartment?!

Either you're imagining it or you have rats/possums up there.

          • -3

@ssquid: Exactly!! I don’t know… leaving it up to our imagination … I have previously mentioned somewhere earlier may be through some man hole they can access dragged one of my down lights & hooked it up to one ..?!? I don’t know!!!! I took all ALL 15 downlight in my ceiling … I found one in my bathroom that was different to all others ( TRANSPARENT) transformer thing…Why?!? I don’t know…. def not animal… I was one of the first owners to move in to this complex of 80 apts… there were strange drilling noises in my ceiling … I thought the builders were just finishing off the buildings internals…?!? I have electrical cords running across to everywhere from apt above through concrete & all across to neighbour across.. My friendly neighbour right next to mine, their cords are not on my side of ceiling but the questionable one’s is.. anyway , I will get an electrician in- hopefully who knows what he is looking at..

            • @Danger321: How do you know it's not an animal?

            • @Danger321: But the electrician you get might be in on the electricity stealing and tell you everything is fine when it's not.

@John Kimble: John Kimble.. exactly !!! That was my concern all along… you do know what I am on about & my concerns here… ABSOLUTELY 100%.. I have been ripped off so many times being a woman… not because I am not intelligent but I have no knowledge in some areas like cars.. electrical stuff..!! Every one should google & read how easy it to apparently steal electricity .. articles , mainly in US I have just read wrote single females or elderly are the usual victims… all clearly written … & I am trying sooo hard to not be the statistic .. avoid if I can…

          • @ssquid: Why would rats/possums be dragging cords around?

            • @John Kimble: They don't. They drag their tails. They also stop moving when they sense other movement.

            • @John Kimble: Thanks J Kimble..ssquid, unless it’s a playful one that knows how to play skip with an electrical cord..?!?

            • +1

Thanks for some of your positive contributions.. I have been busy observing last few days/nights… & will be checking my next bill etc. Some of you find this amusing & I get to wonder…?!?!?
I am trying to find out why..?!?!? I have been very recently told that a neighboring suburb apt block had an incident of electricity theft happened etc during an innocent conversations between social networking.. etc.. lots of other incidents of clicking on walls etc another Neighbour experienced the same & we wondered what it could mean… we are all busy people & have better things to do.. last thing we all want is get stuff vandalized .. now that the local & whole economy is in turmoil, there will be plenty of petty to electricity theft in our society.. If you can’t contribute helpful advises, don’t bother wasting this post space!!!

    • Have you tried different energy providers? Im using reamp and it is really good can do a self meter test and has updated daily estimates etc.

It has the current meter read and you can put your own meter read in too.

      • Turd, Thanks
I may look into that.. sounds all tech & complicated but reamp - is that an app?? I need to see if I can isolate my apt reading out of 80 apts, & which lets me know if my meter is moving while I turn my main power- the switch in my kitchen cupboard…

They are just your regular energy provider, but their website shows you what your last meter reading number is, and you can do a self check.

Without knowing in detail about your energy usage etc it is hard to say what is happening.

But i'd say move to a diff provider and monitor usage

          • @Turd: Monitor, I will.. Thanks so much..

            • @Danger321: Only reason I ask for you to change providers is because each time you change the provider always asks for a actual meter reading. So they send someone from the electricity out to read your meter in the meter room.

Sometimes they can have the wrong meter reading for you etc..

eg. my hot water gas has been 0 for 6 months after our meter was changed, and yes ive been having long hot showers and dont get charged :D yet lol

              • @Turd: Oh I see… I bet yours was a positive experience for you.. :))

  • Would any electrician know how to detect when they look at my ceiling cavity?

    YES!

    • PissLUR.. Thanks!! I will get one when I can & get an answer …

  • +14

    What a wild ride.

The only theft going on here is the waste of time people are devoting to this.

As others have said, if they were stealing your power, your bill would be a LOT more than $70 in excess. My bills are $200 every quarter, I live alone, fridge + bar fridge, washing machine, dryer, airconditioning (cause QLD), TV, computer with a GPU/CPU that chews power, PLUS i'm away for work 1/3rd of the month on average.

Save the $$ you're about to spend on an electrician or similar, and put it towards a therapy session.

or other apts above ..?. I also hear gallons of water going down the drain from above..?!? No bathtub in their apt as far as I know…

If there are apartments above you, then your next door neighbour isn’t crawling around your roof space.

    • -1

I don’t know the source of some “ body” crawling around noise audible.. my single female on her floor ( upper floor of my building) also heard this noise in her ceiling cavity… we both were still wondering if there are man holes leading up to our ceiling cavities..?!? I have put lots of question marks after each questions . We can’t work out the source… is somebody up there to hook up to our electricity cords ..?!? We don’t know if other neighbours hear or experience the same… but we were going nuts wondering…

    • -2

I never said “ next door neighbour “.. but neighbour opposite..is questionable for we all ( both) share the ceiling cavity.. but I don’t know for certain.. only thing is they always come out or in ( I hear their door open) every single time I experimented turning my main red power switch off that’s inside my apt.. I have done so at some inconvenient times & they have been slamming their door soon after as well…

      • +2

Not sure why I haven't seen this mentioned…but if you're living in a multi level highrise apartment building of 80 units then you literally don't have a ceiling cavity, you will have a small area not large enough (or strong enough) to hold a human being, making your theory of people being in there a literal impossibility.

        • DvBargain.. my complex has 80 but spread out.. my actual building is only 6 floors ..

          • +4

@Danger321: It's still a concrete slab building. There is a very very very very slim chance you have a crawl space that can accommodate a human.

I live alone, have a 55' LED, Laptop, Fridge, Washing Machine and Electric stove. I get $120 on an average per month electricity bill. Is this normal or do I have to suspect somebody stealing my electricity. I am concerned now, as am reading that people get $200 on an average per quarter for a studio.

    • Average electricity cost varies a lot depending if there's an electric hot water service and/or reverse cycle heating/cooling, plus the rates your retailer is charging.

      • hot water usage habits are a big factor. If you take two 15min showers every day, you will pay around $100-150 more per quarter than someone who has one 5min shower daily. Also just washing your dishes and clothes with cold water saves quite a bit.

        • bohdud,
Gas for my hot water, I use warm water for washing machine.. I don’t have long showers, as mentioned I am out with my gfs or stay over there.. not home enough. My place is near Sydney city center… it is more expensive than other states.. ?!?

    • Cheap chip, I don’t know what suburb or state you live in… btw, I pay GAS $150 every quarter even though I don’t cook except when my daughter stays with me & otherwise I am rarely home.. gas for hot water… I don’t get it.. but I don’t want to talk about my gas bill here now.
My place is 1.5 bedroom place. Small computer monitor TV I barely watch, I have 15 downlights but I only use one lighting that has energy saving globe, I have candles lit usually around my apt.. only thing that runs constantly is my fridge- brand new & medium size but highly energy saving one..
There were days I wasn’t home away for work or home in the evening just to sleep… yet, had high usage..
… accompanied by behavior of certain neighbour & noises of cords in my ceiling led me to this suspicion .. I could just be simply paranoid but because another Neighbour Neighbour above experienced the same if not similar, I put this to see if any one else experienced or can give me advise..

      • What is your average daily usage in kwh?

      • I know you said you have gas hot water and stove, but anything related to heating and cooling uses immense amounts of energy (dishwasher hot cycle, oven, clothes dryer, air con) Even the power-hungry incandescent lighting uses almost nothing compared to heating/cooling appliances

        • I do have two air conditioning units but never needed to use them .. I don’t always have really hot showers.. my daughter was educated to save water & electricity…

      • $150 a quarter is quite normal. About $70-$80 are fixed charges (regardless of usage) and the rest are usage (most likely hot water for shower, washing, etc.).

        • dwinarto, yes I know..fixed charge is… I just found the dramatic drop after one month or so of turning off of my electricity experiment as I have mentioned in my original post was rather strange…

          • @Danger321: Maybe get a provider who sends you usage details on a weekly basis. Mine does that and I can see how much power I used each day for the previous week.
In your case on the day you are not home your power usage must be low.

          • +1

@Danger321: So you spent a month switching off your appliances and noticed a drop in electricity usage? Must be theft then! No other logical conclusion there…

          • @Danger321: My fridge cost $90 per year to run, and on top of $90 as a fixed charge, I think you are doing pretty good. I don't know about Sydney, but in QLD we had this energy rebate from the state that reimbursed about 90 dollars. So our quarterly bill went from $90 dollars to about $185 for someone that is never at home.

Maybe the increase in charges can relate to losing government rebates, change in tarifs or even increase in fixed rate charges or cost per kW/h

Sometimes if the meter man cannot read your meter because it cannot be accessed, they will make a guestimation. This is not an issue as this will be offset by a more accurate reading the following quarter.

  • +8

I'm not Gunna lie. I cooked up some popcorn and sat in my comfy chair just to read what happened in this post today.

    • +2

That’ll drive up the electricity bill.

    • Yeah, it's fun, 😂😂😂

  • +2

I believe you are not going nuts. But, please consider points below given by previous ozbargainers first and do something, because if you keep typing here without doing anything, most people will think that you are paranoia or a troll.

    Electricity

    1. You said "saved $75 or so that particular month.", if that is true, then for that quarter, your bill will be less $75 x 3 = $225 saving, that means your actual bill should be $0 when the previous quarter was $220 average. So was it a typo error in your first post?

    2. Then again, how did you work out the $75 per month saving? Did you get billed every month? Most supplier bills in a quarter.

    3. Not every quarter you get real meter read, some quarters are estimates. If you have 2 quarter high estimation and get the real reading on the 3rd quarter, your bill will be so much cheaper for the 3rd quarter because the previous 2 high quarters get even out with the 3rd quarter. This is probably why you have 1 quarter lower bill. To proof this, you must be able to get access to the meter room and read your own meter yourself, check the unit if this correlates with your bill every quarter. Or easier, scan your 4 years electric bills (wipe off your address & name) and upload here, I am sure ozbargainers will spot something by just reading the bills. You are the owner of the unit, you have rights to access the meter room. Just go to the meeting and ask the people there where is the room.

    4. If someone stealing your electric, it will not be just $70 like the others mentioned.

    5. If someone stealing your electric, it will not be after your switch box. It will be before your switch box, most likely after the meter at the meter room, therefore your on/off switch will not have effect to theirs.

    6. Very unlikely, still there is a possibility that someone tap your electric after your switch box like you said, the only way is to get electrician to check it. It is quite easy to check without going into the ceiling. They can measure the current flow after the switch box, slowly powering of each and every equipment you have in your unit, then check the reading, if the current still flowing, then your theory is correct.

    GAS

    1. For unit, $150 per quarter with gas shower and gas cooking is about right for single person unit, in fact much cheaper than most units.

    2. Normally for unit the pressure factor and heating value is so much higher than house, and every block has different value. Despite using the same MJ, some unit block will have higher bill than others.

    3. Plus if your block has a common heating system, the gas bill will be higher due to the less efficient common heater that heats up the water for the whole block.

    • Not OP, but I was wondering if you could explain point #2 of the Gas comments you've made please?
      I'm not following… Thanks!

      • +1

@uwu there is an explanation here https://www.canstarblue.com.au/gas/megajoules-costs-explaine…

In layman's term, different unit block will have different gas pressure and different heater that has different efficiency. This results to different calculated MJ, despite having a same meter reading.

If the heater is individually installed in your own unit, meaning each unit has their own heater, the resulted MJ will be much lower.

If the heater is located in the common area, meaning all units share the same heater, the resulted MJ will be much much higher.

Turning on nd off ur lights or mains, wont disrupt thr power at all

Theory of ur tht u turn main off and someone comes out is totally wrong.

If they r stealing ur power, they stealing it from a point b4 ur mains. Ur main controls power inside ur house only. If u turn it off, it ll turn off power inside home, it wont turn off power in the wire which is coming to main, and any1 stealing will be tapping from that wire i.e. the wire between Meter nd ur Mains.

Sometimes, your concession of 24% or 40% is expired and u ignore it nd next month, bill is high and u keep worrying tht wht happened. Have u checkd tht ?

Back before we had wireless networks, I wanted to get a network setup between two rooms in my unit, without having a blue lan cable working it’s way down the hallway. I was in a top level apartment.

I drilled two large holes in each wall, and shoved a yellow tongue up the inside of the wall.

In the common area hallway there was a manhole/access point, so I used a tall chair to get access to the roof cavity. Once up in the roof space, I stepped across the wooden braces, found my yellow tongue, pulled the cable up and completed the network run. Easy.

However it did surprise me, that from a common area, I was able to step across and have access to anyone on the top floor’s unit (8 in total). If I wanted to enter, I’d obviously need to cut through their ceiling from the roof, but I had access to all the power.

Tapping into a live power line is incredibly dangerous, but not impossible. Also there was some common power which could have been used. The TV aerial which supplied every unit, had a power amplifier. That could have been pulled for a few seconds, a double adapter inserted, then TV aerial amplifier plugged back in. I could have easily just run some power cable back to my new hole in the wall and had a power point with free electricity.

So it’s not improbable to believe someone could steal electricity… however without you being on the top floor, I’d say it’s near impossible to have it stolen from you.

Unless the 16 year old apprentice who wired up the building when it was first built accidentally put some of your wiring feeding their unit. Causing them to call their agent complaining about faulty power points

    • Seedyrom,
From my past observation, when I first moved in, there were drilling noises from above my ceiling- like literally inside my ceiling cavity- there is an electric cord I can see linked through concrete… I don’t know why ..?!? you mentioned TV aerial amplifier… from that part of my ceiling, I hear noise as if an amplifier is turned on.. for hours sometimes… I don’t know how related my experiences are.. Experts in the field would if they wanted to wire my stuff.. I bought it off the plan so may be they knew they could ..?!? As mentioned, this building- builder history etc if a past contractor told me they are not nice people in a passing comment, they must have done some dodge stuff..

      • +1

What does this "amplifier" sound like?

It's not common or consistent enough to everyone to use in describing sounds.

And the electrical cord. Can you describe what that looked like and how you could see it (I'm guessing its in the ceiling space)?

        • This building has non- compliant sound proofing.. I have the report done by a professional in the field.. therefore, I can hear everything .. clear enough to know & describe.. the only thing I am not 100% is which particular floor although I think it’s my immediate floor above but the noises may be carried from another floor… I can’t detect that..

      • Key thing to note is this person was in a top level apartment, where a roof cavity is much more likely than between floors….the experience is interesting but does not apply to you :)
