Termites or Ants ?

This morning I noticed these two small areas of carpet in our living room (which is directly next to our outdoor area) with this dirt/dead ants/mounds?

I was hoping someone in the pest industry could comment on the following pictures and advise if this looks like termites or simply ants

I am hoping it's just ants that have brought in dirt etc

Thanks

  • Has it rained heavily locally in the last 24 hours?

    • Yes we have had a bit of rain over the past one week

Doesn't look like ant mounds to me, looks more like carpet beetle larvae carcass. I'd get the exterminator out regardless.

Get a pest inspector to come and have a look, and get them to use a moisture meter, as well as check whether the timber is soft, or giving way.

I’m not sure, usually termites as far as I know leave hard mud tunnels because they protect themselves from other ants, and other insects, whereas to me that looks more like dead insects because it’s quite glossy, and reflective in those pictures.

But get a pest inspector in just to be sure. You don’t want to risk it being termites and just leave it.

Termites have straight antenna. One of those bodies has has elbow shaped ones.

Not likely for termites to be out in the open like that, they don't like light.

  • could be both, its my understanding that sometimes ants go after termites or their lava
so sometimes ants will march up or down a wall or tree or whatever to get to a group of termites
and the reason you could have a cluster of dead ants is because they've walked into termite poison - unsure if its changed now but they use to have a fine dust that termites would track back to their nest that way it kills the whole hive, if ants are going after the termites maybe their nest in your house has died out too
