How to calculate how many FF points you need for a flight INC Taxes?

I have been looking at all of the QANTAS FF credit card deals and am wondering how many points I need to redeem for a flight including taxes.

A regular booking from Melb-NY would cost $1851 (in June 12) where $641.22 is tax.
According to QANTAS, it takes 128,000 points to fly to NY on the same dates but it doesn't include tax.

The question is:

Would it take 128,000 + $641.22 to fly to NY?
How many points would it be for the flight including taxes?

I've looked at all of the links on their site but couldn't find anything.

  • it vary mate, coz qantas doesn't have direct flight to ny jfk, so it is depend on what is the second carrier, it varies between 140k - 170k

  • Thanks for that. Hmm, may have to collect for years to acquire that many points. ;(

    • based on my experience, redeeming point for this flight such a waste of money, just have a look other item that you can redeem, calculate the value per point.

  • Here's the Classic Award points table for Domestic and International:

    http://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/program/usingPoints/poin…

You can't use your points for taxes on International flights. This is only available for domestic flights.

For domestic flights, taxes/fees/surcharge = 4500 points per leg. That is fixed I believe.

But yes, collecting QFF points from groceries (unless you run a restaurant or have a super duper huge family) would take up many many years to earn that many points. However it is worth it for people that fly Qantas a lot on business trips though.

  • +1

From my experience economy has a maximum. It was around 140,000 points for Europe.
I added extra flights (Stockholm -> Helsinki and Helsinki -> St Petersburg)and the points didn't go up only the fuel levies. That is where you can get a good deal as those extra 2 flights only added around $120 in levies.

And you can select lots of the available flights and see what the difference is, somtimes for example, a BA flight will be less points and fees than Qantas.

I also have a friend who swears the best value for FF points is around the word ticket.

    • Now that is some good information. I had no idea. I always thought that it is better to get gift cards and spend however you want to.

Next time I am booking a flight I will try out with FF points.

BTW any tips with Altitude Reward Points.

      Cheers.
