hey guys,
i am looking for a new antivirus software for my computer. I have checked in a few stores but it is quite expensive. Would anyone know where I can get a good deal?? Currently, I am using Mcafee Total Protection 2010.

I vote for the Microsoft Essentials as well. Works great and is lightweight as well.
ClamWin. Excellent scanner. Light on resources and doesn't run in the background slowing everything down.
PS: I love how google ads places a big Norton ad on this page rolls eyes

depending on what browser you use
you can install an extension/add-on for blocking these sorts of ads i.e. AdBlocker

Or just turn off ads in your preference (go to your Profile page, click on edit, click on preference, uncheck "Show Advertisement").

Certainly some vendor with money to spend. A lot of people would think "Norton" when you ask them about antivirus software. Personally I just use Microsoft Security Essential. It's free and it's relatively light on resource.
+1 but I think it doesn't detect in real time.
KIS 2011/12 sells for $20 at most places, including MSY.
Could also try Norton 2011, despite the negativity that most people have towards Norton, their latest 2011 offering is a big improvement over the older Norton 360 series.
But before paying for an antivirus, you should consider the free alternatives such as Avast! (one of the best free antiviruses around) or Avira.
Mod: Removed warez link
We were using Avast here but moved ot Avira, and have found it to be better. It seems to be about the best of the freebies at the moment, and does the job just fine.
Having used Avast for many years, and then switching to Avira about 2 years ago, I have to say, I took up the recent offer on Norton 2011, and have been most impressed with its performance.
The reason I went the paid route, was that Avira, according to a couple of AV sites I monitor, had slipped in its detection heuristics. I rely heavily on my AV as I do ALOT of surfing, often to dodgy sites..
My 2c on MSE; Don't bother. Its no more effective than Avast, and that is not that good.

The mod removed my link thinking that it was warez / fake license key, but actually is a promotional key from a german PC magazine.
Get it from here instead.

Don't waste money buying an antivirus. Use a free one such as avast or microsoft security essentials.
Hi,
i had 2 of my comp recently infected,
and i was forced to review my security,
i used AVG(free version) for years, and was still installed on 1 of the 2 comp,
the other comp had Micr essentials(free too).
both failed to find the probs, and i was very worried,
i did some research and found out Ad-aware free antiv was getting good overall result (detect\correct for virus ,malware etc)
and that is smaller then what avg and Essentials are now,
and very fast(Essentials is very slow).
i had a try to it, and once updated, i runned it in full scan on both the comps while in safe mode,
it did wonder, both comp as new, got all the infections and malware around,
i did a second pass with Claim antivir Portable to be sure all was good.
I like Claim antivir and i keep a Portable edition updated and ready to go on a thumbdrive.
When i got the latest comp with win7 and Essentials preinstalled i didn't have to think too much before remove it and install Ad-aware.
(my other comps are win Xp and win Vista)
What i learned is to check every year or so some serious testing review and choose a new antivirus,
better than having to spend hours trying to fix a comp.
Probably will give a try to Avast or Avira next.

We had a similar situation with Avast, hence the switch to Avira.
Incidentally, paying money for an antivirus doesn't necessarily make your computer any more secure than if you're using a freebie. On one of our computers, a freebie (AVG at the time) picked up a virus that Norton had missed.
One prob i found while doing research was that many review are based on result from the Pro versions, since the Softhouse pay the Labs to test the pro version and not the Free version.
Like Ad-aware free was coming out well in few review, were they run their on test in a more homemade way and not based on the labs results only.
After all these good comments about Avira i should give it a try though :)
Another recommendation for Avast - I have used it for years and have had no issues with it. Not only is it free but it doesn't take over your system resources like McAfee and Norton
If you dont haggle too much, Free ware is good like MSE, Avast, Avira,…
But if u r into downloading torrents, porn sites ;) and other dodgy sites, I recon buy a decent paid internet security like Norton.

i'd say really depends on your knowledge of which torrents to download from
i have torrented for about 4 or so years and have 0 viruses, etc on my computer.
General Tips
-Don't click on those pop up / ads on the side
Example
Click here to meet russians on FB
You are the 999999th visitor, click here to redeem your cheque
essentially things like that, however i don't get those anymore thanks to AdBlocker
-Remember that scams also appear in your email
-Don't click on shortened URLS, as in tinyurl, goo.gl, things like that from people you don't know
Or better yet, don't use torrents :) Usenet FTW!
That said I have encountered malicious downloads on both torrents and usenet downloads. If you want to minimize those chances, pay for a private tracker or a premium Usenet indexer where there is a rating/moderation system.
I dont know about that. Can you put more light on that scrimshaw?
-Essentially safer than torrents
-You have to pay to use it(i'm pretty sure there are plans for it per GB), unless you are on internode which Usenet is part of some of their plans
-Faster than torrents(on average)
-No uploads(i believe)

I used Usenet for many MANY years (it need not be paid, most ISPs offer it for free).
Then tried Torrents, but SOOOOoooo slow and painful. I still have torrents sitting there after 6 months where I got (say) 95% of a download, and suddenly it stopped seeding and never came back :-(
Now days I just use the multitude of download sites. A MegaUpload account for about $5 per month and I can easily max out my Optus Cable - 2.2mbps downloads FTW.
And I've NEVER had a security issue from any of those sites.
@llama
How do you get a megaupload account for $5/month?
@ozhunter
If you go for a 2 year premium MegaUpload membership for 80EUR = $106 AUD, that equates to $106 / 24 = $4.41 AUD per month.
However i find a lot of people using more of Fileserve + Filesonic these days, which is why I resorted to going for RapidPremium which covers about 15 different filehosts in a single package. I've been using it for 6 months now and I definitely use it more than I use Usenet.
Thanks scrimshaw, I'll definitely be getting the rapidpremium.
Thanks scrimshaw , Issh and Ilama for usenet.
As a layman in torrenting, What is best suited for me:Usenet, rapid premium, etc.
and are they legal?
As most of the torrent sites like iso hunt or pi ratebay are having law suites against them in some countries.
I do like to import cheap blue ray movies (I wait till they are cheap) from UK. but for asian movies, I have to rely on online watching sites or torrents.
are they legal?
I'm pretty sure they aren't legal(correct me if i'm wrong)^
The difference between these services and torreting is that you are paying for safer and faster speeds
^Depends on what you download
As some files on Usenet/Megaupload/Torrent sites may be legally distributed, as i am aware that mininova is now fully legal, but of course a majority of files on those sites would be illegal to share
BitTorrent itself is not illegal. Except that a large majority of torrent tracking sites have hosted illegal content (technically speaking, they don't host anything other than .Torrent files, which acts as a bootstrap process for the starting the torrent download).
The same goes for any P2P tech really. Usenet is not illegal, it has existed for 30 years now but that doesn't change the fact that the number one use for Usenet today is to propagate copyrighted content :)
Same goes with any file sharing site really.
yes. Frankly torrent sites sometimes look like porn sites. So much to click on. Very tricky messagebox also. You are right about knowledge, I have been using Norton from last 2 years and I take all care not to click any suspicious link. Also take care what u r downloading.
Why buy, get Comodo for free. I have used it for years and it is well forum-supported. It is fairly heavy duty and allows plenty of tweaks or just use default values.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, which is free, note that i can use other anti-virus, but i chose MSE over the others
Other reputable free ones are
AVG Free
