[PC] Free - Total War: SHOGUN 2 (Was $44.99) @ Steam

8800

A very positively rated game free to keep from April 19 3pm. You might want to set yourself a reminder via Ozb.

In the darkest age of Japan, endless war leaves a country divided. It is the middle of the 16th Century in Feudal Japan. The country, once ruled by a unified government, is now split into many warring clans. Ten legendary warlords strive for supremacy as conspiracies and conflicts wither the empire. Only one will rise above all to win the heart of a nation as the new shogun…The others will die by his sword.
Take on the role of one Daimyo, the clan leader, and use military engagements, economics and diplomacy to achieve the ultimate goal: re-unite Japan under his supreme command and become the new Shogun – the undisputed ruler of a pacified nation.

Mod Note: It appears that the start date has been pushed to 27 April 2020 – 17:00:00 UTC (28 April 2020 - 03:00 AEST)

Editor Note: It appears as free as of 19 April 3 AM, but you cannot add it to your Steam account.

      • wow sounds complicated. definitely not for casual gamers, right?

        • +1

Set it to an easy mode and don't worry about the choices so much, when it all starts coming together increase the difficulty. On easy if you don't make the right financial, technological or building choices, you aren't punished so hard.

It's only complicated the first time you try these games but you'll get use to it quickly enough. I play on Hard Campaign and Hard Battles but I don't regularly play anymore, yet I can still win because I understand how it works. Nearly anyone will do fine on it with a few hours play.

A tip, typically in battles you don't need to kill the enemy, you need to break their morale before yours break. You'll understand the more you play, but really its engage in frontal assault while other more specialised units attack from the flanks, lob missiles over the top or break through the ranks.

Once you get stuck into it, you stop being casual pretty quickly. I used to spend hours and hours playing when I had more time, now I will fit an hour or two in where I can when I start a campaign I like. I don't know about this one, but the previous games had good tutorials, usually based around a straightforward campaign with some staged battles that start easy and get a bit harder. Actually one of the better tutorials I've played.

There is a lot of things going on at any given time, so it takes a while to get used to, but for someone who has played that many total war games, I can sort of do it on autopilot.

You can also choose to skip the micro battles by selecting "Auto-Resolve" each time your armies clash with someone else's - those battles are the most time consuming parts of the game, but also the most enjoyable. The downside is that Auto-Resolve usually causes your army to sustain more losses than if you micromanaged the battle yourself. Last time I checked the AI wasn't great (for the more experienced players) but for new players it'll help you figure out battle formations and strategies.

          • +1

@divineiniquity: Agree with this part, my strategy is usually to have armies that mean I can auto resolve most battles by dominating, but occasionally you need to jump into one to make sure it goes the way you need it to. The battle advice during is usually pretty good, obviously boring and repetitive for experienced players.

      • So is it like Civ?

        From a quick Google:

"They are definitely a little different. Civ has more flexibility in how you build your empire - you have more control over where the cities are. And the technology tree is richer and more strategic. And, obviously as you get into the late-game, you're potentially focused on non-military victory conditions. As a result, combat is super-simple and fairly boring.

Total War is laser-focused on the strategic and tactical combat, and the city-building, research and diplomacy all take a back-seat to that. As a result, real-time combat is fantastic."

        • The cities being fixed is the main bit. Depending on which Total War game you are playing, you will get slightly different options for city building, but you are improving existing cities. There is one main city per region, which can be as small as Gibraltar and as big as Muscovy. These are where you can build units, which you then combine into armies which move around together and have staged battles. There are other towns within regions that can have economic/research/improvement aspects.

          So quite different

    • It's more a of a strategy game. Take over territories, build armies, then real time tactical battles.

  • Downloading now, we got there in the end.

  • Dlcs are a few dollars only too
Any must play one that you can recommend.

    • Rise of the Samurai.
      Fall of thr Samurai.

All of the DLC add content, but they are not worth full price at all. Sale price, should be their price.

      • yeah if they go free maybe won't ever pay a cent

      • Hmm I can only see Rise of the Samurai in the DLC. No DLC titled "Fall of the Samurai" exists.

        • this one is automatically added, it says.

        • +1

It's been a while, apparently, it was a spin-off from Shogun Total War, not a DLC. I didn't remember it being that way.

Years ago a classmate bought this at Chinatown a pirated copy for $20

  • Grabbed a copy, thanks OP!

  • +1

I am ashamed of myself, I already own the game and hence will not get this bargain.

    • -2

You bring shame to your famiry!

  • I've never played RTS games, more of a FPS gamer myself. It's free so I might give it a go. What's the learning curve like for a complete RTS newbie?

    • +1

Pretty high, but there is usually a pretty engaging tutorial. I've been playing them for years but will probably still do the tutorial when I kick it off tonight.

    • the opposite i am anti FPS, always makes me dizzy that kind of counterstrike games

  • guys, sorry a noob here.
so i install this game on windows laptop, i connect laptop to an external monitor.
under windows display setting, i setup that the primary display is the monitor not laptop screen.
but when i run this shogun game, the game still run on the laptop screen. is this normal for steam?

    • +1

While you're playing, I would change your laptop's projection settings (press windows + P) to second screen only. Should fix it easily.

      • will try thanks

        • You can also go into Steam's Big Picture Mode, change the settings to display on your second monitor. When you launch the game from Big Picture Mode it'll open on the second monitor.

Note that you have to use Big Picture Mode every time you launch the game to have it show on the second monitor.

  • Thanks DB!

  • This is the best TOTAL WAR game ever

  • -1

Couldn't work out what to do in 5 minutes. Uninstalled.

    • correct i was confused too……

    • Wow…this is one of the best entry in a very user intuitive series for strategy game and you gave it 5 minutes.

  • this game takes some brain.

  • Anyone have an idea why "Editor Note: It appears as free as of 19 April 3 AM, but you cannot add it to your Steam account." is the case?
Cant say I've seen this before.
    What's the issue?

I dont have space on my laptop atm, so looks like I can't get it then.
    Hope they fix it.

    Thanks OP

    • +1

You can add it now - I think it was listed as free for a while but was locked or something

  • Just got this, so happy it got pushed back otherwise I'd probably have missed it.

    • so cut that i missed out. had been waiting on this for days. :( oh well, its not like i woulda had time to play considering my backlog eh? hehehe

  • +1

First I thought "I missed it again.", then checked it in the steam store "Hmm…I already purchased this before."
Can't even keep track of my backlog (facepalm).
