Sending Money to Bali Most Effective Way?

Hello friends,
I used to cruise quite a bit. I have no idea if I will ever again. I have a favourite crew member who is finally cruising back to Bali. Bali’s economy is going to be decimated. I’m a bit concerned about my own future but I’d like to send him about say $500 AUD. The $500 would include the fees, so I want to keep them down as low as possible.

I haven’t told him yet. Does anyone have familiarity with Bali’s infrastructure and could advise me? He would have a bank account as the cruise line must pay him some way. I suppose I could pay him via PayPal and once fees and exchange rates are taken into consideration, that might be the best way to do it.

Open to any ideas. It is intended this will be a one off.

Thanks and stay safe.

💐🙏

  • There are multiple ways to do this, eg Transfeewise, Western Union, Kangaroo Transfer etc. There are also unlisted P2P remittance providers set up by Indonesian living in Australia (DM me for details).

As for your assumption on the person having a bank account. This may not necessaruly be true. Many working people in Indonesian don't actually have a bank account and are still paid in cold hard cash. Paypal is another no as it is not popular in Indonesia. You will be better off paying him via the e-Money providers (eg. GO-Pay, Grab-Pay or OVO).If you have a way to ask him abt bank accounts etc, then do it. Another alternative is to open up an ING or Citibank Plus account, send him the ATM card and tell him the PIN over the phone. Once he withdraws all the funds, then just cancel the card.
