Having Issues with an eBay Buyer

I recently listed a Switch game on eBay and received an offer which I accepted. The buyer messaged me asking "what's the best price I can do?" and I replied that I wasn't haggling and expected to be paid the original offer plus postage. The buyer then claimed that they left a note when making the offer saying that "shipping costs would be excluded". I don't remember seeing the note and I can't find any evidence of it. I contacted eBay customer service who advised me to request a screenshot of the note from the buyer as it would be available in their messages. Well, I guess I called their bluff as they stopped responding and still haven't paid for the game. I have the feeling they are regretting their purchase and are trying to scam me to reduce the overall cost.

I now have two options:

1 - I cancel the transaction and relist the game and get stuck with eBay fees (what I'm sure the buyer is wanting me to do).

2 - I open a payment dispute which will reimburse me the fees and eBay will take action against the buyers account (they buy a lot of stuff with 400+ positive reviews), but it will take around a month to be resolved and I won't be able to relist the game until everything is concluded.

I'm in the process of relocating which is why I'm selling most of my games, so I'm considering taking the loss and relisting it because I could always use the extra cash. On the other hand I want the buyer to be penalized for pulling this crap.

What do you guys think?

    Your choice 1, (or 2).

I bet if you check your listing that you'll find you forgot to disable the default "open to offers" setting or whatever, and it'll say that right under the price. Just cancel the listing, eat the fees, and relist it. It'll cost you like 30 cents or whatever.

The buyer never paid so PayPal has nothing to do with it. Wait 4 days to open an unpaid item case. Then another 4 days to close that case and receive a fee credit. You're not down anything in the end.

This will also put a black mark against the buyers account and record the events an unpaid item case. Many sellers have filters in place to stop such buyers bidding on items they are selling.

  • Which game is it?

    • Luigi's Mansion 3.

Cancel and move on. The buyer is nothing but trouble. There is no point in trying to work out a 'deal' as the buyer will just screw you over with a return and keep the game.

Add their ID to your blocked list so they can't buy from you again.

  • I put in a payment dispute before I went to sleep and woke up with a message from the buyer saying "ok ok I changed my mind about the game can you please cancel it for me". They were obviously trying to rip me off.

      Don't cancel.

Let the dispute go thru so the buyer gets an 'unpaid item' strike.

That's the plan. I told the buyer that if they told me that to begin with I would have cancelled it for them, but because they tried to rip me off and wasted my time I'll be continuing with the payment dispute.

  • If you cancel and refund payment do you still pay fees?

I recently sold a game too, but I forgot I left it at my parents house. And due to travel restrictions not going to risk to pick it up to send it for a $1600 fine.. So I cancelled and refunded buyer.

    • No. eBay is really good with this - if you have eBay plus at least. They have helped me out lots of time with dodgy buyers.

      • They 'credit' your account for future listings. But not a cash refund

        • Not for me. They didn't charge me.
