I Need Yeast. Where to Get It Now?

I am not a baker, but I now have too much time that I want to try baking something.

3 weeks I have spent to search for a pack of yeast….no luck!! I am sure many people are thinking the same like me that's why it's out of stock all supermarkets I visited..

So help me fellow Ozb, any secret place to buy yeast without crazy pricing?
I just want to make some donuts…

you could learn on youtube how to make your own, but i think it takes a few weeks.

Tortillas doesnt need any yeast, make some tacos.

Try sour dough baking. No yeast needed.

    • I thought there was yeast in sour dough, it's just the yeast floating around your house rather than specifically added yeast? (posting pre-Google-ing)

Can and often is lactobacilli, lactic acid being the sourness.

        • TIL. Thanks.

So by 'need' you mean 'want'.

this is where i get my yeast from, bought some last week from their location in Brickworks (Burwood)

    • Both of their yeasts are inactive (nutritional supplements) not for baking. I have been looking too. I did find some at Aussie Health products but I haven't tried it yet. The Lotus active yeast is out of stock though when I checked just now.

  • I bought yeast for wife within last 3 weeks at Woolworths.

Be patient. Supermarkets are starting to restock.

    • i visited 4 branches of woolies in last 3 weeks, no luck. Maybe it's the bad timing of my visit.

I ask the staff yesterday, he didn't even look at me and just shake his head meaning no more stocks..lol…I guess they are all very tired getting same questions everyday.

  • Go first thing in the morning once it's open to all.

  • We bought a pack last week, just got to be lucky I guess.

The local baker will be able to give you a spoonful.
Once you have that, grow it in a sugar solution so you have yeast forever.

    • Will they give some? I might ask them then, i just need a little.

I mean, I'd by some bread/cakes before asking, but it will something they have in abundance.

Whenever we run out of yeast we use yoghurt as an alternative, works almost as good, use the natural or greeek style not the flavoured ones

If you've got plenty of flour, make your own starter, that'll also keep you busy for a couple of weeks :D

  • Anyone know how long yeast is usually OK after the best before date? I have some dry yeast sachets that expired in 2018, I figured I would just see if it kicks off in a cup prior to using it.

    • I tried some sachet yeast a year or so beyond used by date.
The bread didn't rise as it usually does so it was clear it had lost some potency, but still OK, just a bit more dense than normal.

The can of dry yeast I've kept in my freezer is dated 2013. Still going strong.

      • Thanks Youfah and donbot.

I did some reading - apparently yeast doesn't multiply much when added to dough (only single digit percent). So the number of viable yeast cells in the sachet/teaspoon will affect the rise. I guess you could add more yeast to compensate but it would be a guessing game and might make the product taste too yeasty.

I guess based on donbot's response I should keep yeast in the freezer.

Damn, I thought I was doing well with my tin from 2015!

        • I found a pack in my pantry November 2012!

  • I had the same problem earlier this week. Solution for me was to explore the tiny suburban IGA style grocers. Found a few packs sitting around that way.

I got some from Bakers Delight the other day. They have wet yeast, so I just asked for $2 worth in a plastic bag. Put it in freezer if you cannot use all up.

    • This is good to know, thanks!!

    Ebay?
From a Coopers home brew Lid?

    • You can use the dregs of Cooper's Pale Ale. The rest of the bottle is unneeded and can be "disposed" of.

      • Good idea, or any other bottle conditioned beer.
        Murrays?
        Chimay?
        La Chouffe?
These would be more pleasant to dispose of (though not as easy to get). ;)

    • Not sure how stock is, but Coles is really the only place I go to for yeast. They sell the big can of it, the most value for the price I can find. I got one a couple of months ago before the hoarding started. The prior one lasted me for so long that I used it up to a year past its expiry date and it still produced great bread.

  • i got some fresh yeast (fridged) at my local greek grocer in sydney inner-west yesterday, they had lots of stock

  • The Lowan container is by far the best value. Out of stock though. Bread works best for me when its a bit "sloppy."

I would also try naan recipes.

Or make kimchi but you need special Korean chilli powder.

Zymurgists of the world unite! There was a fermentation festival a few years ago.

  • Good results from a couple sultanas in warm water then mixed with flour…

wild yeasts (called sourdough even when it isn't sour shrug)

    Good luck!

  • Bakaloumas in Heatherton in the south-east has had it even when fully sold out of flour.

  • Google 'potato yeast' and give that a try.

  • Where are you situated? I know where there was plenty yesterday in a shop in WA.
