HP Pavillion Docking Station

So I have a HP Pavilion x360 Convertible 14 inch laptop and am looking for a docking station that is compatible…Reason being I am looking to complete my home office setup with 3 screens in total; the laptop connected to 2 external, much larger monitors and work off just those two, putting the laptop aside - quite a common setup I believe. I have been having issues with getting this to work.

Note that I have 1 HDMI port, quite a few USB ports and a USB-C port. I have tried firstly connecting a monitor to the HDMI port which worked but and then a USB-C to HDMI adapter to connect the 3rd screen, which it did not pick up.

I then tried a fairly expensive docking station with 2 HDMI ports going through the USB-C port (https://www.alogic.co/alogic-universal-twin-hd-pro-docking-s…) but my HP laptop did not pick this up!

Does anybody have this laptop or issue? Please advise a solution or any further information would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance :)

Maybe there's a limit to number of HDMI outputs? Have you tried Display port output?

    • Possibly. Display port? I don't think it has one unless I'm blind

This works perfectly fine with 1x HDMI-to-HDMI and 1x Mini-DP-to-HDMI cables plugged into laptop USB-C: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/alogic-ultra-usb-c-dock-p…

Your location says SA but if you happen to be in Sydney, happy to lend you one to test if it works.

    • Do you have the same laptop? So I will need to purchase a mini DP (usb C) to HDMI cable in addition to the docking station? which brand do you have?

I did try a similar docking station (same brand) as mentioned but it had 2 HDMI ports, only tried those with HDMI cables so I'm not sure if it'll work but happy to give it a go - thanks for offering I'm not in Sydney but I can always purchase one in hope they will let me refund

      • I have a work Dell laptop but should be the same for your HP laptop as same USB-C protocol. I'm guessing you've tried all the software settings (right-click desktop > screen resolution > extend display) and different cables etc. If your monitors have Displayport, it's actually better than HDMI.

That basic Alogic dock with standard cables from JB Hifi worked a treat. I did ask if I could return them if it didn't work and they said yes provided don't damage the packaging, so double check with them.

        • You sound knowledgeable on this. I have thinkpad and now trying find docking stations which can charge my laptop and can also used as USB-c connector to monitor.
At my workplace we have a docking station from which i plug-in usb-c to my laptop and laptop get hooked up to monitor as well as laptop gets charged. so i will have less cables.

At the moment , i plug in charging port to laptop, HDMI to HDMI from laptop to monitor. My monitor is DELL 2341H which has media hub but not sure if it can be used to connect with laptop.

Infact i have bought this https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/kogan-8-1-type-c-pd-hub-gigabit…

          • @pyramid: I'm not sure what the question is but avoid buying Kogan products. They're inferior rebranded mass market products, absolutely awful non-existent support if something goes wrong and dodgy business practises.

The dock I linked has power delivery so you can connect your USB-C power cable into it and will power laptop. The one OP posted does the same but you don't need your own power cable as has one plugged into it already. Others exist too.

  • I have since been advised by different sources (including HP themselves) that my HP Pavllion x360 does not have the ability to display two external monitors as the USB-C port is only for data transfer (remember I only have 1 x HDMI and 1 x USB-C, the other ports are just normal USB, no display ports). However, I did try a HDMI splitter which enabled the 3rd screen to appear but only duplicated the second screen and I was unable to select the option to extend the displays across the screens.

It seems as if no adapter or docking station will is compatible with my model so please let me know if anyone can prove different as I would be delighted!

My last resort is taking it to a local technician and hoping they will be able to find a soluton :(

    • I'm not claiming to know more than HP themselves but really struggling to believe this. While the port may not drive more than one screen itself, DisplayLink hubs should work fine with Windows 10 as they have their own built-in drivers to act like displays. You'll need an active Mini DisplayPort cable like I mentioned above as well as HDMI one but it should work fine. Can you pop into JB and try the dock I suggested?

      • I also find it hard to believe since laptop is worth over $1000 but HP did confirm, their explanation was per my above comment. I know you have a Dell; I don't have a mini display port on my HP, unless I buy a converter to plug into the USB-C and try it or can it go straight from USB-C to HDMI? Remember I have tried that other A-Logic docking station mentioned above which went through the USB-C port which it failed to recognise (and a bunch of other generic USB-C to HDMI adapters) so as you can understand I don't want to go to the trouble if its not going to work.

I know multiple people that are doing it with other laptops such as Microsoft Surface Pro and it works fine (which is why its pissing me off even more haha)

  • I see - so what do my monitors need to have on them? I see both have HDMI ports so that's fine but only one has a normal display port, not a mini one. Does this matter?

Nope doesn't matter what's on the monitor end. Can be HDMI, DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort.

      Just get suitable cables. So:-

      1) HDMI (into dock) to HDMI (into monitor #1)

2a) MiniDP (into dock) to HDMI (into monitor #2)
      or
2b) MiniDP (into dock) to DisplayPort (into monitor #2)
