Damn, you could do milk baths , screw coffee.

Do they expire tomorrow or something? Pretty crappy for the dairy farmers.

Presumably a lot of businesses have cancelled their office milk deliveries, it would take time for that to filter down hence the oversupply at retail I'd think

      • Still the same number of consumers?

        • +5

People use much more milk when the company is paying for it.

    • Edit: Expire on the 7th. Seems like somebody at the store panic ordered!

People panic buy, we increase production and people settle down. So much milk and mince meat will be going to the landfill sadly.

Hopefully Coles/WW re-directs excess meat to charities like FoodBank, secondbite etc so they can be put to good use, instead of landfill.

      • I distribute OzHarvest stuff and we can't do it anymore because the venue we did it out of has closed. It's really hard to distribute all this food to people without being physically close.

        • That's a shame, really! Was thinking of small cafes/restaurant operators- saving on ingredients will definitely help.

    • But cows don't make any more milk than they did last week

Wow! one could make cheese or yoghurt !

    • I know. I really wish I could get some.

    • The Instant pot has a Setting that allows you to heat treat the milk ready to make Yogurt. In my case I normally use UHT milk to avoid this step but this would tempt me.

  • Still two carton limit ?

It’s still restricted at coles I believe. I guess the panic buy of milk is gone. You can’t hoard milk I guess. The amount of food wasted from hoarding is shameful. We already waste a lot of food, now hoarding is making it even worst.

  • Other milk brands at my store are also being discounted. Everyone seems to buying this huge supply of cheap Pura milk that not enough people are buying the other brands. Or maybe people are still using up their hoarded long life milk from the past few weeks.

I'm thinking there is a surplus of milk. I've been to a few supermarkets in Canberra in the last week and there has almost always been some sort of clearance.

Probably a few reasons for surplus; Cafes and Restaurants very limited in trade (A lot of them buy the cheaper milk at Supermarkets), so unable to use as much; office and workplaces in a bit of a lockdown, so not going through as much; People tending to use less milk at home; and people have too much long life milk.

It was stupid to put a limit of 2 on perishable products like fresh milk - had to run more often to supermarket just to get milk - a trip which could have been avoided had i got 4 in the first place. With limited fridge space in store (plus other reasons mentioned in this post), it would always be a challenge to store the daily fresh supply of milk! Am hearing they has relaxed limit on fresh milk so that's good.

    Great for making yoghurt.
