  • I bought an N-Strike Raider CS-35 for $29 at K-mart a few weeks back. CS-35 is a much higher spec.

    • What, that's a real bargain! (It's $49 atm. :()

  • Barricade sucks, even with extra power

    • They are the less favourable blasters, but if you were already after one.

Barricades are cheaper at Woolies for $20.

  • with the new vortex range, these types are sort of obsolete

Nup, the current dart system have been around for a while, having a large following. I doubt they will phase them out, the manufacturer will just run two different systems, and make double the money!

have you tried, the praxis is sooo goood, and at 28.84 at bigw stores… (hardly advertised), and target sells same thing for $35

        • Hopefully tomorrow, i only buy things on sale :) Surprisingly "cheap" for a new release item

        • +2

Praxis will be under $25 in the upcoming catalogue for Big W, I think it was starting tomorrow but not certain.

    • It really depends, older audiences in Australia tend to collect Nerf rifles because of their similarity to real weapons mechanics. (Where the darts are bullets loaded into a magazine.)

Discs sort of steer away from that idea, so the Vortex range seem like a completely different class. (Though I do see the advantages.)

Additionally the Vortex series seem to be depending on flywheels for full-automatic and the firing mechanism on the spring based models is very hard to modify/replace. Which kills the moddability.

The reason I got into Nerf was because of the fun involved in modding them, and the fact that Airsoft is illegal in Australia.

Note that the Vortex series perform as well as modded n-strike out of the box, but cannot be modded for better performance so far. (With the exception of the Nitron, which isn't all that great stock anyway.)

  • So should I not get a Barricade? I know I will eventually, I'm collecting all the Nerf guns, but.. if they're pretty crap.. then I might just wait til the price drops to like $10 or something wayyy down the track.

Also looks like I'm going to get a Praxis :P

    • Don't quote me, but i was sure barricade was 15 dollars, last time at bigw, but i didnt get it.
I own a heap of nerf guns, and so far, praxis is the best, followed by break barrel.

The Barricade is not a great Nerf gun compared to others in the range. It uses a flywheel firing mechanism as opposed to a spring-loaded one, and the motor is loud. I've seen the Barricade at my local Woolworths (of all places) for $20.
The new Nitron in the Vortex range uses a similar flywheel mechanism, and it too is pretty average (but the scope is rather cool - I put the Nitron scope on my Praxis). The other 3 guns in the new Vortex range, however, are great. Both the Praxis and Vigilon are a lot of fun, as is the Proton though it only loads 1 disc at a time. The new Vortex blasters with their disc based ammo achieve significantly better range than the old dart based guns, but be sure to keep a close eye on the discs when they hit the ground as they tend to roll quite a bit and can be easily lost.

As far as the original Nerf guns go, my opinion is that the Maverick is the best price-to-performace blaster. Its very cheap (usually around $12-$15 but has been on sale at $8), it fires all 4 types of darts (Streamline, Whistler, Suction and Velcro) and its very easy to mod, though it also performs pretty well stock.

My favourite battery powered automatic blaster is the Nerf Swarmfire, which, as far as I know, isn't availble in Australia but has been availble in the US for quite some time. I bought mine from Amazon.com. It's currently priced at USD$34.99 but I do recall it being priced at $29.99 before.

  • Deploy sucks. The Mavrick is SO much more fun and shoots better. Plus, you can easily hold 2 and buy 2 for the same price!
