Your career is defined by who you smoke and have coffee with.
I was once a low life software engineer. Average at my job at best.
I'm also a smoker and coffee drinker. I smoke in an alleyway outside the office. I'd do this 10+ times a day (and buy coffee 3-4 X a day).
Very powerful men in my office are also smokers.
In the alleyway while smoking, I'd bump in to those powerful men, particularly our CTO.
We'd share stories, share laughter. Sometimes I'd tag along lunch time playing poker with them.
We'd grab a beer after work or go to strippers. They've even invited me once shooting kangaroos and feral hogs at a farm.
That's how I was able to get promoted within the company, as well as used them as referees for my next career move outside the company.

Moral of the story is, you could be average, but if you smoke+drink coffee with powerful straight white men, you'd get further ahead in life.

Why do they have to be powerful straight white men? If they're Mexican should I not bother?

Wouldn't you be 12th in line after all their other family members?

Learn to smoke + drink coffee + dress inappropriately

Smoking, gambling, strippers, hunting sounds horrible to me too. I'd be leaving that culture and joining a company where I can respect the leaders.

So I guess that's a no for this Pluralsoght deal?

Hmm, if I don't smoke and don't drink coffee, then I can fake smoke (vape some harmless shit) and pour tea in my coffee cup and pull it out, right :-)
