Charity ideas - good charity which will help people

During these times a lot of people are suffering and can use our help. I would like to donate some money, but have difficulty picking a charity.

The criteria for me is making sure as much of the money as possible will go to the cause and not be wasted on administrative process, etc.

In the past I used to donate to Red Cross and Fred Hollows (probably not so relevant for the current situation), but want to see if there other charities that actually help people in need. I would like to see some more options and I can do more research into them.

If there are other ways/ideas to help, not just financial, I would like to hear them too.

Thanks.

That's great, thank you. Lots of different options to go through.

  • I understand the motivation, but consider charities need to employ people to do their good works. And quite often it is more effective to pay a modest income to somebody who runs the program professionally, as opposed to volunteers who might not have the skills/application to operate as effectively.

In any case, if you get close to the point of delivery, you can ensure your donations have few over heads. Local community centres, homeless support groups and community groups routinely donate 100% of funds raised to their charity work, as they are administered/funded by grants or volunteers, so all the raised money goes on the project. Many community groups like Lions or Rotary often have arrangements with overseas sister organisations too, should you want your money to go overseas.

And you can also volunteer or contribute in non-financial ways too!

    • Thank you, this one seems like it has a good cause behind it. I did see some bad reviews, but I'll do a bit more research on it.

  • Charities are a business. A lot of your donation won't even get to your destination. I wonder how many people are put off donating since the bushfires, or has everyone forgotten?

I would say try and help the community yourself. It's a tricky situation at the moment to actually physically help.

    • That is true to an extent, but some are better than others. For example after the bush fires there were a lot of options to help via Rural fire service directly or through Red Cross bush fire appeal. But yes there are administrative costs in all cases. I am just trying to research more or less decent ones.

  • Hawkesbury Helping Hands just said today that they cant get any money from the govt charity fund because someone has to be employed there, they are all volunteers

BK2 Basics is an amazing Organisation that is 100% volunteer run, they do the most amazing work for those that are financially struggling or homeless.

They provide homeless meals, drive all over Melbourne helping out numerous people, they also run a community food pantry and are now delivering essentials to the elderly and so much more. They are struggling with funds at the moment and every cent will go to good use!

Check out their website or Facebook page.
