Do I have a faulty GPU PSU or just doing something wrong.

Hey really sorry to ask but I am at my wits end.

I bought a Prebuilt PC from Techfast Last year and have had intermittent issues ever since.

Basically what happen is whenever i fresh boot the PC the whole thing lags really hard, constant loading and things wont open smoothly. If spotify is playing is stutters hard for a second and then unstutters, happens every 30secs or so

If i do nothing the PC usually turns the screen off and after a minute or two it comes back on and usually is kind of sorted.

Normally though I have to force turn it off and turn it back on which resolves the problem 90% of the time.

I think I have either a faulty GPU or the PSU isn't good enough.

Specs:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600 Six Core
Geforce GTX1660Ti
BIOSTAR B45M2
PSU - Allied 550W
8GB Ram
WIndows 10 64 bit

Running a 4K 32 Monitor but had the issue on a little 24inch HD monitor.

EDIT:

Really appreciate the help. Will try a lot of the solutions suggested.

  • might need more info, could literally be anything causing this.

When the lagging up happens, try to get task manager up and go to performance, it might give you more information as to where the issue is occuring, if any of those resources are being hogged by something.

Might even be worth doing a complete clean reinstall of windows.

Otherwise, hit up luketechfast, he's an absolute legend and they have some of the best customer service in the industry. He'll definitely give you a hand to work out if there is a faulty piece of hardware.

    • I also just realised you didn't put the storage you have. Is it possible that is completely full? I know some of those builds had tiny SSD's included.

  • Could be a faulty ssd, could be the motherboard, could be the ram, or the power supply. Thats a tough one to identify the issue.

I doubt its the power supply though, if the draw wasnt enough then you would be getting alot of shutdowns instead of stuttering.

I would recommend reinstalling windows first, then trying a single ram stick in different slots.

  • Your answer is probably in here:

(most likely) —- Is the HDD/SSD having file issues or getting full?
(very likely) —— Is the RAM overfilled with many tasks?
(likely) ———— Is the system old or has software/driver issues?
(not likely) ——- Is the CPU clogged up with threads?
(very unlikely) — Is the system running fine, but the image is lagging because of GPU issues?
(least likely) —— Is the PSU not keeping up with thermal requirements?

This is the task manager whil the issue was occurring.

The spikes on the GPU is when the mouse frees and sound stutters

Im pretty new to PCs so not sure that this all means.

      any idea?

      • Can you delete the drivers, and fresh reinstall the drivers from the Nvidia website.

That will likely fix your problem.

Otherwise, maybe you have other driver issues within Windows10, so maybe you can do a fresh system install with fresh drivers. Then when you're reinstalling your programs, be a little careful and choosey with what you're putting up.

So many times there's these unknown bugs that get fixed out with a fresh install. That applies to both Windows, OS X, Linux and Android. iOS looks the most stable of these systems.

  • What version of windows? Sounds like a display issue, because you mention using the different monitors plus it turning off then fixing itself. Could even be a monitor issue if it happens on the 24" only. I would reinstall the video card drivers. if that doesn't fix, then upgrade chipset drivers, ssd firmware and other drivers. Then check your hardware connections for loose cables.

  • 1.Check CPU & GPU loads when it happens, may be PSU can't sufficiently power at higher loads

2.Do a MemCheck to check memory leaks

3.If you have an old GPU, test with that and confirm

4.Happened similar thing to me with a used GPU which later died (shuttered when changing the frequency levels and boot issues when AMD driver loading)

      • Sorry for late reply, did you able to sort it out?

Your system should be stable even at 100% GPU load if everything is fine.
This is mine at 100% constant 3D load : https://imgur.com/MTyws8M

Also install GPU-Z and monitor GPU power, load, temp etc. when the issue happens like this : https://imgur.com/QJ7yGpu

You can run a benchmark like this and check whether your system is stable at your own risk (Disclaimer: this may harm your system) : https://benchmark.unigine.com/superposition

Check to ensure your CPU cooler is properly seated, and that it had the Thermal Interface Material (TIM) correctly applied.

Download CoreTemp and monitor your CPU temp whilst system is stressed.

Replace the Allied BS PSU with a name brand unit ASAP. I don't care what they promised when they sold it to you, its pure rubbish and if not now, it will eventually damage/kill your system.

OP, what is the max possible current rating on +12V rail of the power supply?
I run my GTX1060 which has similar power requirement with Silverstone 450W PSU with 37A +12V rail without any issues (even my CPU TDP is 95W) :D

  • Had a friend with a similar issue drop by last week to get me to check things out, and one of the first things I'd recommend checking would be the graphics card six/eight pin cable. Check whether it's a dedicated cable that leads back to the power supply, or if they've put in an adapter cable (something silly like two molex connectors to the six/eight pin cable).

If you do have the adapter cable in place, check for signs of damage. Is it burnt? Frayed?

If yes, replace power supply. If no, try and run some graphics benchmark/tests that can give you a reading of how much power the card is using. If it's significantly lower than it should be under heavy load you're probably looking at a power issue.

The card in question in my example was a RX 580, supposed to pull 145W under max load, was pulling 35W and lower, down to 5W at one point. Whenever it tried to pull more, the PC would hard crash. Screen off, fans still on. No way to fix it without hard resetting.

  • Could be a driver issue..
Update chip-set and GPU drivers from manufacturer websites

after taht check your BIOS is up to date..

try ccleaner to clean all the crap out of your temp files etc…
