340

Saw on clearance today at kmart east gardens. Sorry didn't take a picture about 8 left. . Cheap at $59 for a men's 26" bike with shimano 18 speed gears. Too bad I just bought a 24" from aldi clearance for $69. Not sure how good they are but think it's a bargian.

  • Absolute piece of crap…

But if you aren't pumping out massive amounts of power it's good for leisurely rides!

I had one of these once, pulled it apart piece by piece, threw it all into the skip where I live.

Had a mother and daughter go past and the daughter said 'What a waste, throwing a bike out when someone else could use it'.

She accepted it when I told her I destroyed every single component on the bike! I even warped the wheels due to launching in the air on take-off (popped the front up by accident)…due to the weight of the bike smashed it back on the ground and buckled it…if you have a nasty habit of gaining muscles like myself don't expect it to last more than 6 months.

Well it is a $59 bike what do you expect….go to a bike shop if you are a more serious rider and want a decent bike (and pay like 10+ times the prices)!

I'm telling them what they can reasonably expect from a bicycle that cheap. I'm not knocking it…hell, if it wasn't for my $60 special, I wouldn't of gotten into cycling. But it's for people with the expectation that it's as good as any other and will last for years…I'd rather be up-front and honest and tell them it won't! So they know what to expect!

Hey I'm not the Einstein that lacked the intelligence to figure out that someone "pumping out massive amounts of power" wasn't going to break a cheap bike from Kmart lol…

Didn't cadel win the tour de France on this?

        • +31

No, he had the 21 speed model ~ $69

Ah, but how does this :

          I'm not knocking it…

          match up with this :

          Absolute piece of crap…

          That's pretty knocky :-)

Also that last quote you had editted your original post in the time I had typed my reply! ;)

But as per above calling it an absolute peice of shit is knocking it pretty bad lol

Just put a ">" sign and a space before the bit you want to quote.

          TEST

        • Yep, that works. Thanks

        • and what do you put after the text you're quoting?

Perhaps a simple ENTER button. Let's see!

No, 2 ENTER button presses. :)

i too, have incredibly large muscles. The crappy floor buckles underneath me as i walk, so i only buy the best floor material these days.

      • +5

You sure the floor doesn't buckle just because your full of crap instead?

      • so i only buy the best floor material these days.

        concrete?

    • Hey all, I'm so tough I can beat up Chuck Norris standing on one leg, with both arms tied behind my back! And muscles? I'm so big that I make Ron Coleman look like that skinny guy from Blades of Glory and School for Scoundrels!

Wow, how did a $59 bike thread turn into such a bitchfest? U all mad??? :o

    • +3

I give an honest opinion and then…well…

If your going to buy a piece of crap, obviously the cheaper the better! But only if you realise it'll probably break in six months. The amount of people who buy the cheapies then have to bring them in for constant repairs or expect them to last forever is astounding…

As long as you go in with a realistic view of what they are for, NO PROBLEM! It's when people kid themselves about these bikes, THEN they have issues!

      • Yeah I don't know why either.
I much prefer reading about peoples' experiences and opinions about the product at hand rather than making lame puns - there are many more other sites for that.

This IS a bargain site after all.

      • i'm with you bendertiger - all the way.

PS - I have no doubt we both have massive muscles

  • sothern?

because its not worthy of you

  • Anyone know if this is available Australia wide?

    • +2

      No, just Kmart

I had one of these not long ago (unwanted gift). I did not pay for it. Quality was reasonably ok consider its price range. I used it to ride a 3 km trip from home to work and I gave up after a week as I wasnt fit enough but all my rides were ok

    • +2

this sounds like a much more fair comment.

      • alwayseric…you aren't a cyclist are you?

  • +2

I’ve rode a kmart bike to uni for just under 3 years now, it hasn't broke yet. I have replaced brake pads and tires that need changing from using it and I've had to tune the gears twice, I think I paid $100; it’s a trax, 18 speed with crappy front shocks.

  • Why do people blame the cheap bikes? As long as you don't rush from the hills the bike will be fine for ride 2-3 years, that's enough.

    • EXACTLY! If your doing leisurely rides, they are great, but put them through any sort of stress and…

  • If you don't get a year out of it, take it back to k-mart.

    keep your receipt.

It sounds like the perfect bike to take to shops/school etc without fear of it getting flogged.

    • +1

teased yes, flogged no (kids can be cruel)

  • So this is no good for my 120kg dead weight??

    • +1

Probably not. I had a 'BigW bike' for $250 and it was rubbish. The front forks were misaligned causing the brakes to rub constantly. BigW's solution to the problem was to loosen the front quick release… so much so that I could remove the wheel with my hand. They gave me the bike back 'fixed' in that condition. Dangerous stuff.

For someone with light build on flat terrain this bike is going to suffice. Putting it another way, I really wouldn't want to find myself rolling down a hill at 40km/h on a KMart bike.

      • Probably no more dangerous then riding around on my $1000 road bike doing 40km/h, Actually probably less so.
How many cyclists do you hear on the news in an accident because of a cheap bike compared to cyclists being hit by cars.

        • +2

People on cheap bikes don't go for 70km rides in the roads. People with better bikes do

        • If a cyclist falls over due to a dodgy bike and hurts themselves no one cares. The newspapers and TV news don't come calling. If they get hit by a car they get hurt quite badly or killed. That's when newspapers notice.
