I've been quietly looking for a new job, more for a change of scenery, increase salary and more responsibility for a while. I am in the engineering industry contracted to the Federal govt so is an essential service. I've been approached by a few recruitment agencies who are trying to line me up with interviews within the same industry. Now that the coronavirus has hit would you risk the change especially as I'd be on probation for 3-6mths?
Would you leave a safe job and go for a new one during the pandemic

Yeah I'm very wary about leaving my current job due to the virus and have told him as much.
Be very careful. recruiters will talk a big game to sign you up. Unless it has a 100k termination bonus of you fail your probation period forget it.
Govt is guaranteed employment. Stay with it for now (personal opinion)
I'm kinda ahead in your situation and left work during the pandemic 2 weeks ago and started a new one. Left for the same reasons. I don't know what to even think considering we're living day to day now…
In honesty, keep your job and hang on to it as long as possible. Starting a new job in a pandemic will be weird as you won't intereact with anyone and its challenging to build work relationships.
I'm in a similar boat at the moment. Have a decent job where there may be some cut backs (but my team appears quite safe). Have just interviewed at one of the Big4 banks and think I will be offered the role. Slight salary increase, but much better commute.
Just purchased a property last month so I definitely feel job security is more important now. Also unsure what to do.
I left a job in the superannuation industry to join the hospitality industry a few weeks back. We’re all stood down for an indefinite period now. Stay in the safe place for now
I'm going to be the devil's advocate here and say move jobs. The company is well aware of the situation regarding COVID19 and have chosen to continue hiring for a reason. I myself am looking at a new job too and will be moving when the opportunity comes. I have Centrelink to fall back on so worst case scenario I sit back for a few months and get back some of the tax I've paid the government while working.
But they suddenly do decide to get rid of you, they don't have anything to lose since you'll still be in probation. Whereas the other company would have to make you redundant and give you a package.
(profanity) no.
One does not get redundancy pay if employed less than 1 year. Consider any new employment very carefully.
This must be a troll post surely.
- Does the new company also has gov client?
- Is the new company flourishing or does it has any advantage in this current situation, eg supermarkets?
- Can you negotiate with them to waive the probation period?
No.
No
Call them back when things settleNope, stay put
No
I would avoid any major changes during this period if possible.
The recruiter would be desperate for a comission.
