Gaming PC couple of questions

Hi
Apoligies if I have posted this in wrong forum. I think its the right place.
Looking at building myself a new gaming PC. This is what I came up with so far
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/DbhYb8

However is has these warnings..

Warning! Some AMD B450 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Matisse CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions.
Note:The motherboard M.2 slot #1 shares bandwidth with SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports. When the M.2 slot is populated with a PCIe-based M.2 drive, two SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports are disabled.
Note:Some physical dimension restrictions cannot (yet) be automatically checked, such as cpu cooler / RAM clearance with modules using tall heat spreaders.

Questions
1. Should I be getting a different chipset on the mobo? It seems all Ryzens should use a B540 chipset
2. Is this shared Sata bandwidth an issue? I dont really understand what I should be changing if anything?

I know I need to get a few more fans, I like the lights and wanted to get whatever cheap fans that are ARGB so the lights can all be sync. I think its 1x120mm in back and 2x140mm in top. Should I also change the stock CPU cooler also? Which one you guys suggest again looking for ARGB.

I am in Perth and will probably got to MSY. Do they still build custom PC's (happy to pay a fee) do you know if they accept UnionPay? Any other comments welcome. Thanks

    1. Check the manufacturer page for your particular motherboard. That should tell you if your model needs a bios flash. If it does, ask the shop you're buying from to flash it - there's a small but non-zero chance of bricking the mobo while attempting a bios flash so best to leave that risk with the shop before you get it.

    2. Not an issue unless you're planning to have a tonne of (non-SSD) hard drives.

    In response to your questions:

    1. A B450 chipset should be fine for a 3600. It would most likely be flashed to support Zen 2 CPU's (Ryzen 3000 series) - but if in doubt, just ask the retailer you buy it from to make sure it's flashed.
    2. Shared SATA bandwidth shouldn't equate to a real world issue for you. You will only be able to connect 4 SATA drives (Instead of 6) - but that should be the only thing you would notice

Above comments address 1 and 2 well.

Should I also change the stock CPU cooler also?

Ryzen stock coolers are more than adequate, especially since youre going for a non-X CPU, B450 mobo and getting extra intake fans. If you really want a RGB cooler, looking at pcpp, a GameMax Gamma 500 RGB would suffice.

Also, look into just a regular SATA SSD, 2.5" or M.2 - instead of NVME as these drives are more expensive and the difference in speed between these and SATA drives are minimal when it comes to gaming, boot speed etc.

For a ryzen system, you want at least 3600 ram, it will give you positive bonus performance.

I would get Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB DDR4-3600 personally which is $10 more than what you have selected.

I would also change the power supply to a SeaSonic FOCUS Plus Gold ATX 80+ Gold 650 W - which is $20 cheaper and higher rated at 5 stars on pcpartpicker.

  • would this be a good setup for VR?

  • Hey Roary,

I only just recently completed a very similar build, you'll be fine with a B450 Chipset…personally would recommend either of the following from MSI:
    - Tomahawk Max
    - Gaming Pro Carbon (I managed to pick up one of these for only $225 so look around)

I would mirror what Garetz has said regarding the ram and highly encourage going for 3600 Ram.

Here are the fans I am using in my build, https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B081SP775B/ref=ppx_yo_d…
    Jay2cents recently did a review on these also… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCcgCJx9xlg&t=21s

While no need to replace stock GPU, Ryzen's fan are solid and do the job!

My recommendation would be to give building it yourself a go! There are a lot of great YT Guides out there and honestly nothing like the feeling of saying "you built your new gaming beast"

    Good luck with the build!
