Seeds All Sold out. Even Summer Seeds. What’s the cost of growing summer veggies indoors?

Being a gardener my self and in self isolation. I’m wondering how much would it be to use a UV light to grow a couple of veggies in doors or in my small green house. (No weed don’t worry)

The Led lamp is 3000V.

a 3000V lamp is going to chew through electricity pretty fast i think

    • 3000V? All the LED grow lights I've seen plug into 240v. Remember, voltage does not denote how much electricity it uses. It's voltage * amps = watts.

A gardener saves some seeds to plant next season's crops?

    • I have some but they are not as good as the ones from the store.

Google growing vegies Hydroponically, there's lots of info available about lighting, and most vegies can be successfully grown by this method either indoors or in a small Greenhouse.

  • User sTon3r should know.

we are not expecting a shortage of vegies so maybe grow weed and sell for vegies and remember if you get caught free food, accommodation and more sex than you probably want

  • What LED is 3000V? Link?

    • 3000w sorry

      • 3000w is massive. You can't power that by a standard plug in power outlet, it would have to be wired in.

Are you sure that's the right rating? Snap a pic and post it if you can

  • A UV lamp is going to burn your plants, and not much else.

What you need is a lamp that produces the right light. Thats either a High Pressure Sodium light, which gives a full spectrum of light similar to daylight, or a LED grow light. Either one is going to cost you quite a lot for even a small setup. And the running costs are going to push your bill into the 1000's per quarter.

I would go with mushrooms. They are packed with vitamins, and grow in the dark. Aldi has a kit next week for $15

    • I would skip the mushroom kits. They grow mushrooms, but for $15 you'll buy more mushrooms in a shop than you'll grow. The kits cannot be 'revived' for a second flush by adding manure/fertilizer either.

If you want mushrooms, check your local pine forest after rain during April to June. Pick pine mushrooms which are easily identifiable and don't look like poisonous varieties.

    • It seems prudent to grow just a little bit of cannabis to offset the costs then.
      Or try Eden seeds

I love that everyone is trying to go self sufficient last minute, but 90% of those plants/seedlings are going to die.

The other factor is people don't appreciate that anything they plant now won't be ready until August. I like the enthusiasm and people's new found willingness to think about where their food comes from and how to get more, but they also need to be realistic about the calories they need every day. It's unlikely the average family could live off a 100m x 100m field for all their needs.

Even less so a single plant which was grown indoors.

It's a fun hobby but unless you've got real space it's little more than that…

  • 3000 watts or 3000 volts? Because 3000 volts sounds more like a grow bulb that's powered via a 240v ballast, if you meant watts then LED is sounding more likely.

If it's a UV (only) lamp then it's not going to be of any use for growing, plants either require the blue or red bits of the light spectrum depending on whether they bear fruit and UV is too far into the blue spectrum to be of much use for growth.

Keeping things simple, if you want to grow indoors you'll need a lamp which outputs a combination of the blue and red bits of the spectrum, I can't remember the exact ranges which are useful to plants but it's easy to find online. For an LED lamp it'll most likely give the colour temp in Kelvin so lower values will contain more red and larger values more blue, I've grown everything from cat grass to herbs to chillis using a 3000K array which is a good mix of both.

If you could post a link for the lamp that'd help with the details.

    • It doesn’t let me post the link but I saw it on eBay it’s called AUGIENB 3000W LED Light Hydroponic Full Spectrum Lamp Plant Flower

      • That doesn't strike me as a quality product, but you're not going to get anything useful for anywhere near the price of that unit.

I'd recommend doing a bit of reading up on COB lighting, it's still LED and will cost more but it's far more efficient.

      • Something funny there. 3000W of LED is likely to set fire to stuff. 10W is enough to light a room.

Also 3000w is not possible from a standard power point. They have a max of 2400W. It will cost a lot to run if it is true 3000W.

It might be the max rating of each of the LEDs but they are only driven at a much lower wattage. Looking at the lead in a similar description eBay add is be surprised if it’s much over 300w

  • Cheap as chips sell the same seeds as Bunnings, but slightly more expensive (<10%). Was at my local a couple days ago and they had plenty of stock.

the reject shop sell the 'dt brown' range of seeds, which are much cheaper than bunnings (they are not short dated or defective)

      • Good to know thanks
