Laptop Buying Advice

Hi all, will need a laptop to work from home for university now that we’re all self isolating. Would someone with more experience be able to tell me if this is decent value for money? https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/lenovo-ideapad-s340-14-inches…

Will be using it for the general university tasks such as excel ect. Thanks in advance

  • The Microsoft eBay sale with code PMT20 is still on (as of a few hours ago, I bought) so have a look there:

    https://www.ebay.com.au/e/coupon-offers/20-off-microsoft-sal…

    Original Deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/525217

(It says expired but not as far as I can actually see).

  • I got this one:-
    https://www.amazon.com.au/Latitude-Laptop-i5-6300U-Windows-R…

but it was by a different seller. It came with a HD screen & 256GB NVMe, that is what they rum, up to a max of 1TB; I just bought 1 TB anyway, it was meant to come with 128GB. It came with 8MB of RAM so I bought another stick from the States for around 100 bucks. But I was lucky, I paid $546 for mine so all up with a NVMe heat cooler, it was $800, a bargain for a Latitude laptop. Mine has the 6300u CPU thou, but that is OK. I don't know if this has touch screen, if you want touch screen, get this one from the same bloke, only 3 left:-

Buy a 1TB NVMe for it & a 8MB RAM for it & you will have one hell of a comp, the heat thing for the NVMe was cheap & I can point you to the RAM place in the States as there is only one place in the world that sells RAM for this comp and it is hard to find

I can also point you to a place where you can find an OS if you want to as well :)

    • It came with 8MB of RAM

      Are you sure?

This CD-NoteBrick from 1995 had double the RAM..

      • I get it, I wrote 8MB instead of 8GB
so I am old, sue me
I have been playing with computers for too many years

I should have checked the mag b4 typing the other long reply
        no biggie
        I started reading the mag, I shouldn't

        • Haha I know. Just couldn’t resist

That magazine brings back memories. My first laptop was a Toshiba Satellite Pro 440CDX. I BIOS locked it and forgot the password :( Pretty sure I still have it but I just can’t get into it.

Sorry SD2310. Just nostalgia coming up.

          • @nyteshaiid: My first computer was Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K
I got it for the 16K as the salesperson in KMart didn't know what the difference was between 16K & 48K, and I wasn't going to tell him
I learnt basic and I was starting to learn machine code when the thing fried :(
I was working long hours so I didn't get into computers again until the early 90's when I went back to school
Then the last time I got into computers was from 2004 until now
I build my own systems and fix other peoples comps and do other things to them apart from game
I am on a pension so I just take it easy with my worn memory and can't remember

  • Yep, I opened her up
I ordered another stick in February, but I still haven't got it,
so the seller sent another stick; which was very kind of them

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/534391

I hope one of them comes soon
I put in a 1TB stick of NVMe with a heat sink in,
that was the 1st thing I did. I was lucky to get the touch screen one
Then I noticed the battery not doing so well,
and guess what? The seller sent me another battery :0
It was a small size, but it doesn't matter, it was a new battery - cool eh

Not bad eh. All up with the 1TB and the extra RAM, I reckon it would cost me in the end, close to $800
I love that little 7470 to bits. I have a Latitude E5500, so the Latitude E7470 is a step up.
It should last this pensioner a long time I hope
