Ergonomic Office Desk Chair for 10+ Hours of Sitting

Hi guys,
Just want some advice/recommendations about what kind of ergonomic office chairs are out there that will suit 10+ hours of working/studying.
I am hoping to keep the budget around the $500 - I'm still a student.

I have done a fair bit of research and a lot of people seem to warn against the 'gaming chairs', however I have a few friends with the Secret Lab Titan chair and they love it.

I have heard people swear by the Herman Miller Aeron or Steelcase Leap. I have had a look on Gumtree/eBay and haven't seen one pop up that is appropriate for my price/location.

What do you use? What are your recommendations?

I am now working from home so would love to get this solved soon, my back with thank me.

Cheers.

    buro metro from winc

    • I agree with the recommendation (can't go wrong with a 10yr warranty) but when did they get so expensive? When I bought one 5 years ago (metal base) I think I paid less than $300.

    • Paid $279 a few weeks ago. Sitting on it now. A great investment for long days in front of the screen.

    • How tall are you guys?

      I'm 6ft 2" (188cm), so I liked the idea of a taller back chair.
Do you guys find it loses posture around your shoulders?

      • Did you end up buying something? I'm the same height as you and thinking about upgrading from my Buro Metro. It squeaks a bunch and the mesh has sagged, allowing the plastic to press against my back. I already claimed warranty on the same issue last year but they haven't gotten back to me about it this time. I contacted them before the whole virus thing and now it's impossible to get in touch with them with all that happening.

    • I have had this chair a while and I can't stand the squeaks it puts out every so often.

  • $99 IKEA MILLBERGET chair with a nice plump cushion has served well for hours of daily seating over past 2 years. I don't get the demand for Aerons at all, especially at those prices. We have them at work and it's nothing special to be honest. Maybe suits some people better.

    • I used one of these working from home, it lasted over 5 years with 15+ hours of use per day. The arm rests cracked at the bottom holes but Ikea sent out replacements when the first one started to go, and the fake leather peels off and makes a mess but the material underneath is actually quite nice and smooth. I wish they sold it without the fake leather.

    • Yeah right, I would've scrolled straight past that when looking.
It doesn't look like it's all that supportive, how do you find the lumbar support there?

  • Am I the only person who doesn't sit properly? I sit on my chair backwards, put my legs on the table, cross my legs…etc. I just like the cheap simple office chairs because I can spin them around and sit however I like. It just doesn't feel comfortable for me to sit in the "recommended" position.

That said, I think the only serious advice I can give is that you really shouldn't be sitting for 10+ hours. At least stand up and walk around every hour or two.

    • Fair enough.

And I do of course get up every now and then, but yeah majority of my day and night is in front of a computer.

      • Consider a sit-stand desk as well.

I have this chair, it's like the budget version of the ergohuman chair.

    • How do you find that for your shoulders?

I ask because it looks like it leans back higher up, rather than hugging your back/shoulders.
I'm quite tall (6'2"), so I think something that comes up to my shoulder would help.

      • When I lean back there is plenty of shoulder support but for the most part I'm sitting upright (I'm 5'10). It has great lumbar support so generally don't find myself leaning back that much. If you live close enough to a store I would recommend trying out their range and find one that works for you

        • Yeah okay, thanks for that. I may have to have a look next time I am in the city.
          Appreciate the info.

  • Merged from Ergonomic Office Chair Sub $500

Hey all - i'm looking for an ergonomic task chair in the sub $500 range - ideally sub $400.

    Requirements:

    *Mesh back
*mesh seat cushion or thick fabric
*good lumbar support - ideally adjustable
*arm height needs to be adjustable
*prefer full length with head support but not a deal breaker

I've had a Buro Metro for quite a long time and the seat cushion has worn down now. Looking for something different this time.

The ergohuman IOO seems to fit exactly what I want, but is out of budget. Nobody seems to be doing any sales at the moment!

I'm in WA, so shipping costs tend to be high for certain websites - or not even available.

    • How long have you had the Buro Metro? Seat padding is included in the 10 year warranty.

      • about 9 years - bought it second hand (barely used)

    • I'd be interested to hear if Buro will actually repair or replce the seat padding. Mine is just 3 years old and the padding is starting to form a butt crater.

    • Humanscale Liberty Mesh? Second hand are around the $250-350 mark. Brand new around $750+.

      • Unfortunately I can't seem to find anything second hand in WA at a reasonable price. The Herman Millers on gumtree and fb marketplace are all 1000.

I use Kogan's Ergohuman knockoff. It's pretty decent, but I haven't sat in a real Ergohuman to compare. Better than the starving-student chairs from the brick stores for sure.

  • Fursys T50?

  • Perfect but can't find it in budget?
