Single Malt Scotch Recommendation? Less than $100

Hi all.
I'm looking to buy my first single malt scotch. Sick of my dads home brew.
What recommendations do you have?

Keen on less than $100

I haven’t drunk for years, but I lived in the middle of the Speyside Whisky Trail area in Scotland for 10 years.

I nearly cried when I looked at the prices of some of my favourite tipples on Uncle Dan’s 😢

For a good but cheap (ish) start, any of the Glen Moray or Glen Grant singles would be a good start for $50ish. This caught my eye as a DM member special https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_585971/glen-moray-s…

After that I’d give Craganmore a go (about $95), and then The Macallan ($120 but worth the extra). Glenmorangie is also worth the extra (edit: cheaper than I thought)

Glenfiddich is a triumph of marketing- more available than it deserves.

Avoid the Islay malts until you’ve tried a nip of them first at a friend’s or a bar- they aren’t cheap, and are very polarising. You’ll either love the strong peaty smokiness, or despise it. Laphroaig is a good example- people rave about it, but I think it tastes like hospital antiseptic.

    • To my way of thinking, either you are drinking Islay malts, or you are mucking about.

I'd say Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Single Malt at $88 as a DM member.

  • Any with a high alcohol content - you may need it to double as sanitizer ! Probably cheaper than Hand Sanitizer off Amazon

40% is not high enough to make hand sanitiser and effectively kill a virus

Something like an Aberlour 12 is a good start for around $80. I'm enjoying Glenlivet 12 at the moment which is more pretty smooth and approachable as well.

Honestly just head to Dan's, check a few reviews, pick a few, and build up what styles you like.

And agree, probably work your way towards to more peaty whiskeys from islay (although there are some Highlands that are peaty like Talisker/Highland park).

  • Edradour, extremely smooth yet flavourful, smallest distillery in Scotland so not as well known but still available from Dans for 80ish. Honestly could not recommend it more highly for those wanting to explore Scotch for the first time.

  • My tuppence: start with an "island"-style whisky (distinct from highland or Speyside). To me, these are softer, smoother style (Islay may be exception amongst islands - I've no idea, never touch Islay). My favourite amongst these for a long time is Scapa. But it can be hard to find sometimes.
Look, a really good option is to find a specialist whisky shop and see if/when they do tastings. You'll learn heaps about different types in one sitting under tutelage of an expert. And it's enjoyable!
I detest Glenfiddich, Johnny Walker (all colours), and the like. They are almost always over-priced rot gut.

  • ….how nice to NOT be discussing Coronavirus, toilet paper, and panic buying!!

Glenmorangie is a top "beginner" single malt.

    After that buy Lagavulin.

    Welcome to the club.
