Laptop not detecting a touchpad

I have a Spectre 13 that I cannot get the touchpad to work. clean reinstall windows, got HP support people to remote access. Got nowhere.

I think the operating system is not detecting that there is a touchpad.
What are the chances that the touchpad is broken and the OS cannot detect it? I have used a few over the years and I have not encountered one where the touchpad is not detected. It might be physically broken but the OS can still see it as a device.

water damage or incorrect seating of cable.

hmm…possible water damage. If so, not by me. The Spectre 13 laptop does not have any screws to be open so I cant check. Let me youtube to see if there is a way to open it.

      • I saw the tear down. Hmm…if I try it myself it might be permanently torn down. I might give it a shot later. Or I might just hand it down to my mum. She does not need portability and the speaker on it are quite good for her to watch YouTube

I would guess that the trackpad is dead.

open the laptop and reattach the cable, or just get a mouse

It does not have usb-a so a normal mouse would be a little bit of a pain I am using a usbc-a adaptor and it sticks out annoyingly. My backup plan is to get a bluetooth mouse. Would like to use the touchpad so i wont have to bring a mouse to class.Looking for an arc mouse as a backup

      • Buy a cable instead of an adapter.

        • Thanks. Didn’t think of that. I was using th adaptor that came with my samsung s8

Have you disabled track pad accidently using a Fn key combination by accident?

Have you deleted the track pad drive and reinstalled or tried a previous driver version?

Highly unlikely but worth a shot.

I have checked. it is not disabled. in fact I cannot find a touchpad setting under windows, which I guess to mean Windows does not even see the touchpad there. When I try to install the driver, the synaptic touchpad driver is under hidden device. extra information "The driver does not detect the device"

Sounds like a hardware issue for sure. What a pain.

      • Is the laptop still under warranty?

        • Nope. Way out of warranty.

          • @BuyoTheCat: If the touchpad doesn't work in bios which is F10 on HP or in diagnostics F2 then I'm afraid it is faulty. You can try re searing the cable as a last resort. What is the exact model ? Most of the Spectre range you can remove the base cover by unscreening the torx 5 screws.

            • @Sean8802: It’s the spectre 13 notebook. Non floppy one. The screws are under the rubber slips. It looks like a big pain to do. I might do it later. Right now I can live a mouse.
              Thanks for helping
