Best Value Phones at Present

Hi all,

I've cleverly managed to damage the screen of my beloved Samsung S7 edge and am now in the market for a new phone. I'm capable of researching, and have done so, but I wanted to also appeal to the collective knowledge base here for further opinions.

My criteria:

  • For simple phone use, the various apps involved in running a household as well as some slightly more intensive apps for work (medical anatomy etc)
  • I use my phone most heavily for scrolling newsfeeds/reddit/facebook, alongside a reasonably heavy component of watching videos.
  • The occasional photo for family reasons, though I'm no budding photographer.

Therefore what I think matters to me is most of all that nothing is -bad- with the phone's day to day function. Things like ads on the firmware, slower than standard operating speed, poorer than average camera etc. I don't expect extremes in performance (I don't notice much difference with ultra/high res), but I am fearful of trying new phones/brands because of the chance of having some aspect of the phone drive me mad because it is subpar.

Secondary to simply 'not being bad at anything', the things that are of interest to me in terms of adding value include a better than average screen, better than average battery life and decent storage options. None of these are deal breakers (as above, I'm pretty happy with average), but they may be deal makers. A headphone jack would be appreciated but not demanded.

I have no fixed budget. It would be most accurate for me to say that I want good value for money, and I'm attracted to the sense of a bargain. I would be willing to spend $1000 for a phone if I felt I was getting $1500 worth and it met my criteria well. Likewise I'd be delighted to pay $400 if I felt I was getting $800 worth in terms of comparative quality.

My (and partner's) previous phones have included iPhone 3 ( really struggled with apple's OS but might be willing to try again if it was the right option), Moto G5 (loved it for a month because of the sense of value, but it quickly slowed down and the battery life faded, thus making me slightly suspicious of cheaper phones), a Google pixel 3 (which I'll never get again after a variety of concerns) and a S7 Edge (lasted 4 years until I intervened, was loved the entire time).

Some options my research has caught my attention:

  • Oneplus 6T/7T
  • Xiaomi Mi 9T
  • Huawei P30
  • Samsung S10e/S9

I've found refurb model pricing obviously enticing, but am wary of going down that road. Would be delighted to get any strong opinions about refurbs as well.

Thanks for your time and expertise!

TLDR:
Want new phone that represents value for money without compromising at least mediocrity across the board. Any opinions about what is bad/good in the current market and why?

Having bought a Xiaomi Mi 9T, and having sold it again shortly afterwards, I would take a S10e over the Xiaomi, simply because of the more refined software. I found bugs and glitches far more frustrating to deal with than bare speed alone.

Exactly the sort of comment was hoping for. Thanks for your perspective - this is the sort of thing that seems temperamental depending on your luck, and its well worth me considering.

Why not install a custom rom?

      • Because of Google play store issues, warranty, time, and because I shouldn't have to. I would pay more for a phone in order not to have to muck around. I'm time poor, and depend on my phone to be reliable to keep my life in motion. Installing a custom rom is a huge disruption.

  • In this family we have
Xiaomi Mi 9T - happy with it; great screen
    Xiaimi Mate8 6GB / 64GB - happy with it - fast and smooth - great screen
Xiaomi Pocofone F1 - great phones

None are quite as refined as our Huawei Mate 9 which stopped receiving updates 2 or so years after purchase which is the only reason we dumped it. So the P30 might be OK but P30 price > Xiaomi

You can buy Xiaomi from tobydeals, geekbuying etc at great prices, and they're all very well priced.

We are leery of NFC but the Mate8 has it

We have a couple of iPhones because some clients demand we send stuff which looks pretty on an iPhone. The App store on Apple is a tyrant's nest, only browsers allowed are based upon Safari - meh.

We prefer the Brave DuckDuckGo and Firefox Focus browsers on Android, all good. We sometimes side load applications, especially ones designed for overseas markets, (you need to install APKs) but trying to install foreign apps on an iPhone is a world of misery. Iphones are also very expensive for what is in effect last year's tech matched to a Samsung screen and a bullying OS.

Standardised on the Pocophone launcher across all our phones, works nicely.

    • Really interesting to directly conflicting experiences with the same phone between posters. I'm glad to hear the Xiaomis have treated you well as a family. Any complaints at all? or you'd happily buy the same phones again if you had to replace them?

  • I would be willing to spend $1000 for a phone if I felt I was getting $1500

I realise this is excessive but the $1499 4G Samsung s20+ can be purchased from Samsung for $1029 currently if you have access to the partner programs and use an addition $50 coupon (easily obtainable). I'm about to get this phone myself I think.

    • Haha, nice. Literally exactly fit my brief of value for money.

I'll have a good look at them - I'll have to fall pretty heavily in love compared to the S9 or others to make it my choice, but I had no idea they were going so affordably!

      • Also just in case you were thinking you could go for the S20 and save some more money the S20 is actually more expensive than the S20+ until the end of march.

  • One phone I have been considering is the S10 lite. It's a 2020 phone meaning it will be upgraded to android 12 eventually unlike the rest of the S10 lineup (based on 2 yr trends for Samsung)

It lacks waterproofing but it has a big screen, 2019 flagship processor and big battery.

None are deal breakers for me.

So, you would be fine with a phone that has:
        https://www.gsmarena.com/search.php3?nYearMin=2017&nDisplayD…

No Pen, No HR sensor, No Barometer, No IrDa, No NFC, No FM Radio, No Headphone Jack, No microSD card, Single-SIM, No Wireless Charging, Regular USB Charging, Regular battery size, Sealed battery, No Water Resistance, Glass Backplate, No Ultrawide Camera, No OIS stabling, Medium density screen, 60Hz refresh rate, LCD screen, Display with a hole, and for it to have a locked bootloader, so that there is No Root Access, and there are No Custom Roms from the developer community.

….personally, I think that makes for a lousy experience/lousy phone.
Since you wouldn't care for having some features and enhancements, I would instead recommend you look into getting a Xiaomi Note 8 Pro, or better yet a Realme Pro 5. I think they're a little better than the Nokia 7.2, Moto G8+, and Sony XZ Premium, and they're cheaper. Just make sure you flash a good Custom Rom on them, either here or here.
