Fruit and Vegie Prices Crazy?

Finding fruit and veg prices are going crazy in my admittedly small sample.

The greengrocer I usually go to, which has a few outlets around Sydney, has good quality produce, and usually decent prices. Usually, 5kg of red potatoes is $6, broccoli is a bit on the high side at (say) $5-6/kg. On Monday this week, they were selling broccoli at $10/kg. Then yesterday and today, they were selling it at $15/kg!!! And the bag of potatoes is now $12! And I think it was $10-12 for one Chinese cabbage. I saw this same price at another greengrocer too.

Is it just gouging due to the pan(ic)demic, or are we suffering a late wave of increases from the earlier bushfires or something?

If that greengrocer can’t get additional supply, then they will up their price.

Colesworth have probably negotiated a greater amount of extra products, so the little guy may struggle.

    Lack of supply.

There was a drought that was in full swing until a month ago that hindered autumn veg growers' ability to plant leaving a much smaller crop to harvest.

The price of grapes are reasonable as there is a good supply.

    Hoarding.

It’s clear to me some people are stocking up on veggies and some fruits too.

Which is a shame coz there will be a lot of wasteage when it goes off.

Can’t cook and freeze everything, surely!

  • Definitely. Lettuce usually $2-$3, currently $5

Broc have been super expensive for several weeks.

  • I've been using local produce swap meets and just switching price wise at supermarkets to whatever's on special and frozen options.
(Broccoli and cauliflower close m especially)

However I also went to my local Asian grocery yesterday. Butcher and fruit and veg, completely stocked no panic buying, prices were the same as last month.
I refuse to pay double, it's fun getting creative from what you usually get too

  • Yes, good idea, I got some Chinese broccoli from the Asian supermarket yesterday and it was normal price, not sure the same as normal broccoli but will see if I can use it in western meals as well so I don't deplete my rice stock!

  • Edit, will post in another more appropriate thread
