"Can I Self Isolate at a Friends' House?

Hi, my uncle will be returning from a non-High risk country.

Things are complicated, He's been staying at a family friend's house here for months and most his belongings are there (instead of his registered address).

So is he allowed to self-quarantine at that place,
so he doesn't need to pack the stuff he needs over?

Will he/they be fined?

Edit - sorry move to Health if required..

If the cops ask he can just say he's waiting for a mate.

What address did he give on the inbound passenger card? If he was going to live at your mates he should have written down that address… As long as you are isolated, doesn't matter where. Could be at your own house, a mates house, a hotel, airbnb, caravan etc

      inbound passenger card?

      unfortunately..the Registered address

I don't think it will matter, as long as he does what was asked in a practical manner.

The point of "isolation" isn't to protect the healthy people, from a mixed population. It is to isolate the sick people, from a healthy population. If that above doesn't make sense to you, I think this interactive-article will convey things more clearly.

Just make sure he gets one of those human bubble things to wear. Then he can travel from premise to premise safely. You can literally give him a kick in the right direction to speed things up.

Hi, my uncle will be returning from a non-High risk country.

Everyone seems to think they are not at risk.

  • No one is going to go around door knocking to see if you are at your specified home address.

The important this is that he isolates!

The next most important thing is that if your uncle or the friends get symptoms they also get tested\isolate.

      I guess that's likely they won't. Extreme self-isolators won't even answer the door :p

QUESTION - he's feeling normal, but Family are worried what if he starts having symptoms at checkpoints? Will he be stranded
Do they check/test him every time before boardings, and after landings? He also has a stop for 2ish hours in Singapore I think.

      Biosecurity measures
      At the airport

If you are unwell, airlines must refuse to let you fly. There will be extra screening of passengers at Australian airports to identify anyone who is unwell.

For more on screening and reporting of ill passengers, read coronavirus advice for travellers and airlines.

At overseas airports, Australian Border Force liaison officers will work with airlines to identify travellers who should not board.

      In-flight

If you are on an international flight and show signs of an infectious disease:

the airline must report you to biosecurity officers
biosecurity officers will assess you before you get off the plane
you may be isolated or referred to a hospital

If you are unwell on a flight you will be identified and referred for assessment when you arrive at your destination.

If he is sick chances are they want him out of the country anyway. Can't see them working too hard to stop residents flying home. Sucks for the plane, but pretty hard to force someone to stay knowing the possible medical costs and deny them the chance to get home where it is free…

If he is febrile coming in he will be escorted to the closest testing facility I would think, which is probably in the airport.

        After that, well who knows…

    • The cops are going to go around and randomly check self isolators, all states have the law but its been enacted in some now with fines are between $5000 and $50000 in WA, $20,000 in VIC, $13,000 in QLD, NSW $11,000. If there is mass breach, a federal law can be invoked with fines up to $63,000 or up to 5 years in jail.
In NSW the cops are still allocated to sniffer dog duties on public transport hubs.

I really think the government should be providing community centres for people to quarantine if they're not able to quarantine at home.

For example, what if a person returns home and does not want to infect their family? Or what if they do not want to disrupt their family who may be working or studying. What if a person lives in a share house or apartment with other people who they could infect? What if a person does not yet have an address (e.g. they moved overseas and now coming back). What if a person has a fight with someone in their home and needs to get out for their own safety…etc.

The list goes on with ridiculous cases where a person may not be able to stay in their own "registered address".

    • I really think the government should be providing community centres for people to quarantine if they're not able to quarantine at home.

Someone's going to turn into a zombie then we'd have to World War Z this out.

    • The community centres might need to be kept free in case they need to be converted into hospitals.

My wife is self-isolating at a friend's place since her arrival. The neighbours saw the lights were on and heard music coming from the house on Tuesday night and called the cops. She explained the situation to them from a safe distance and they were fine with it. They even offered to do a maccas run for her. She is in voluntary self-isolation since last friday and has not had any symptoms though. Maybe they were more chill because of that.

    • Did they call the cops for a noise complaint, meaning your wife was having a serious solo party?

Or did they think the place was getting robbed? If the latter, why would burglars turn on lights and play music?

      • Must have thought the place was being robbed. Funny thing is my wife has been there since Friday and they only called the cops on Tuesday night.

Looks like wifey get some away time from you and the kids x)

Friends evacuated the house? Only her there? Or is whole household in iso now?

          • @capslock janitor: The friend and his pregnant girlfriend are overseas and didn't want to risk flying back to Melbourne and falling sick. The neighbours would have known that they were away.

Our friends were happy for my wife to stay at their place after her return from Japan. I've stocked up the place before her arrival. She's bored and missing us but otherwise is fine. But yes, she owes me big time! :)

My wife said she thought she had seen someone peeking over the fence while she was doing yoga in the backyard earlier that day.She called out to them but there was no reply. My wife is exotic-looking and has a french accent and the neighbours are an older couple. Maybe the hysteria of Covid-19 has started? And they called the cops because she looks and sounds foreign?

    Update..

the current plan is to let him stay at our house alone for 14 days.. and my whole family evacuate premises, and move our daily needs with us to Family friends.

(other options were Him to stay at a hotel; or let him stay at family friends, and shuffle Nan to ours for 2 weeks..)

really miss our home, I'm thinking of moving us all back after a week, it's only day 4.

This isn’t Russia, here the police need probable cause to even question you. No problems where you stay as long as you self-isolate, could even be a hotel room and get room service.
