Using a QHD 32 Inch Monitor at FHD 1080p Resolution for Games

I am in the market for a new VA gaming monitor and have been looking at some 27-inch and 32-inch models.

Want a future-proof 1440-compatible display that I can use when I upgrade my graphics card later this year.

EDIT: Current GPU is ATI/AMD Sapphire Radeon HD7950 V3 Boost

At the moment I am content with playing non-competitive gaming games at FHD 1080p. (Flight sim, Cities Skylines, The Witcher 3, No Man's Sky)

Shortlisted LG 32 inch QHD ultragear with pixel density of 93ppi.

Seems cheaper than some 27-inch FHD models hence why I thought I'd go for larger size.

If I buy a 32-inch display and set the resolution to FHD 1080p, will games and text look blurry?

Would I be better off buying a 27-inch display running at FHD instead?

I sit about 3 feet away from the display.

Have had an old Samsung SyncMaster 2443BW (16:10) ^_~ that I've used for 11 years, time to upgrade!

Thanks for your help :)

Love the SyncMaster 2443BW - Just replaced mine last week. Although I was using it as a secondary monitor.

If it was me, I wouldn't replace the monitor until you replace the video card. Who knows what will hit the market by the time you replace the video card. Then once you get the new card you have a better scope of whats most suited for it.

No point buying something FHD at 1080 now if you buy a GPU that eats 1440p for breakfast.

I wouldnt think 1080p would look any good on any monitor that is 32" - I just upgraded from 27" 1080p to 27" 1440p and the difference is night and day.

Thanks for the reply, fellow SyncMaster! Hmmm perhaps I should opt for a 27-inch 1440 display and lower the graphics settings so my old GPU can keep up?

This sounds more sensible than a 32-inch 1440 display that sounds unfeasible performance and value wise

Another owner of the Samsung SyncMaster 2443BW checking in. I only upgraded when I moved to a multi monitor set up with an ultra wide on a monitor stand and found out the Samsung had no VESA mounting. Otherwise brilliant monitor.

Second fergy too - anything below 1440p on a 32" (or even a 27") will look terrible, it will look especially bad downscaling from 1440p to 1080p (not a multiple), and then even worse if you're not even a metre away from it.

      • Why does a 32" require more GPU than a 27" if the GPU is pushing 1440 on either anyway? It is all the same resolution?

        • It doesn't. A 4" screen running 4k will need the same amount of grunt pushing pixels as a 27" or >34" screen. It's the number of pixels being pushed, not the area they're spread over.

  • i think some games have option to change in-game render scale

    play at 1440p , render at 1080p / 720p

I have found 1440p on a 32" to be the best mix of pixel density and size for desktop/gaming use.
Also I find 1440p on a 27" can be a little too zoomed out for general desktop use - still usable though (some in this scenario may like to increase desktop scale to maybe 125% in Display settings).

    • Appreciate you sharing your perspectives on pixel density and display sizes you've experienced! Most helpful :)
