27" Monitor Recommendations ~$500

Hi All,

After reading the general guide for monitors on Tomshardware , I'm now seeking some opinions on 27" monitor recommendations.

Monitor will primarily used for gaming (Mostly Runescape, and Rainbow 6 Seige) and 2 days a week will be used for work (Mainly reading numbers)

Looking for something with: Freesync, 1440p, 27", VESA mount support and HDMI and DisplayPort input

Current PC specs: MSI B450, MSI r9 390, Ryzen 5 2.6k.

I've spotted the LG 27GL850. My budget is ~$500, but from the recommendations I've seen, i don't mind paying more for something I'll use for another 5+ years (I've had my current one for 7-9)

I've also spotted the Optix MAG271CQR as it was 'more' inline with my budget.

Opinions and thought on these 2 monitors? Or any other recommendations?

  • Some discussion here from a couple of days ago. The Viewsonic seems close, although not sure about VESA.

I'd go with the Viewsonic VX2758-2KP-MHD. QHD, 144hz, FreeSync, IPS, 27 inches, VESA compatible, and well reviewed by Hardware Unboxed. Goes for like ~$450, but right now its only available on preorder from places like Scorptec, so if you need it right now, you may have to wait a bit.

Alternatively a better deal if you aren't fussy about IPS is this Samsung CGJ54 which can be had for the low price of $361 right now with code PMID20 from Futu. This one is also QHD, 144hz, FreeSync, 27 inches, VESA compatible but its VA instead of IPS.

Both are good quality, and well under your budget. If it was me, I'd go with the Samsung. Good luck with your quest.

    • I've had a stuck pixel appear on my ViewSonic. It's pretty disappointing and I can't return it since it appeared after the '30 day DOA warranty'.
Tried to fixing it with jscreenfix but it didn't work :(

      • That's unlucky. What retailer did you buy it from? You might have remedy under Australian Consumer Law.

        • Computer Alliance. You think it might be worth asking them? It's been a 3 months since I've purchased.

@FireRunner: Yeah you definitely should. Computer Alliance is usually pretty good with stuff like this, and all their ViewSonic monitors come with a 3yr warranty. No harm in trying, and if it doesn't pan out, just namedrop Australian Consumer Law :)

            • @Fishdog: Alright, I'll give it a go

            • @Fishdog: Well CA got back pretty fast.
They said they're unsure if a single pixel is covered under warranty and advises me to contact ViewSonic directly.
Not sure what I can do now. ViewSonic clearly states they don't cover dead pixels outside the 30 day DOA period.

              • @FireRunner: Have a read of the instructions my BenQ had a part that said you need a certain amount of dead pixels to get a return.

                I googled for you.
                https://www.viewsonic.com/support/limited-warranties/standar…

ViewSonic Monitors are warranted with our LCD Pixel Performance Guarantee. Through this limited warranty, you are guaranteed high-quality screen performance with no more than the following improperly operating pixels, depending on the native panel resolutions.

Panels with resolution smaller than 3840x2160: Three (3) improperly operating pixels and no more than two (2) bright or two (2) dark pixels.

Panels with resolution 3840x2160 or higher: Eight (8) improperly operating pixels and no more than five (5) bright or five (5) dark pixels.

You can always try and see what they say.

                • @aussieprepper: I believe that's the US/Canada warranty info

                  Australia's is here

                  Service and Warranty Disclaimer:
                  1. ViewSonic covers dead, bright and dark, pixels within the 30 day DOA period, outside of this period, these are not covered.

                  • @FireRunner: It also says any number of dead pixels are covered which is good, but its a shorter time frame which sucks.

Is it worth the hassle of not having a monitor for a while to get it fixed? (If you ship it in) Where is the dead pixel located?

                    • @aussieprepper: It's a single stuck red pixel about 20cm right and 10cm below the top-left corner. Somewhat close to centre and quite noticeable against a white screen. If it was more to the one of the edges, I wouldn't really complain. I'd happily wait to get it fixed.

                  • +1

@FireRunner: Hmm in that case I'd probably first ask ViewSonic, then just try to pressure CA directly, as opposed to going through ViewSonic. Just use strong wording like 'unsatisfactory' and 'unacceptable' and something may come of it. And technically under ACL, they can't just shunt you to the manufacturer. They need to either repair, replace, or refund. In this case, a refund is probably what this would result in.

You can claim a remedy from the retailer if the products do not meet any one or more of the consumer guarantees, with the exception of availability of spare parts and repair facilities.
The remedies you can seek from the retailer who sold you the product include a repair, replacement, or refund and in some cases compensation for damages and loss.
The retailer can’t refuse to help you by sending you to the manufacturer or importer.
You can claim a remedy directly from the manufacturer or importer if the goods do not meet one or more of the following consumer guarantees:
                    acceptable quality
                    matching description
any extra promises made about such things like performance, condition and quality
repairs and spare parts - the manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that spare parts and repair facilities (a place that can fix the consumer’s goods) are available for a reasonable time after purchase unless you were told otherwise. How long is ‘reasonable’ will depend on the type of product.
You are only entitled to recover costs from a manufacturer or importer, which include an amount for reduction in the product’s value and in some cases compensation for damages or loss.)

    • As I understand it, the only benefit the Viewsonic has is better viewing angles as an IPS?

As I need 2, on either side of my main monitor, facing me, I don't think viewing angle should matter right?

Edit: Looks like neither of these have height adjustable stands

      • IPS offers better color accuracy and viewing angles, VA provides better contrast/deeper blacks, but may suffer from ghosting.

As for the stands, most of these monitors come with crap stands, which is why you just chuck a VESA mount on them.

  • Just bought the 27GL850 - If you can afford the extra $200 I would go for it. It's a great monitor. VESA mount is a bit fiddly if you have an arm to mount it to but other than that, all the features and great picture. No Dead Pixels as a bonus.

  • Thanks all. Leaning towards the C27JG54QQE that's currently on sale, but I'll do some more research today.
