Ergonomic Office Chairs for Working from Home

With many of us moving towards working from home scenarios, I thought it's time to discuss ergonomic office chairs.

What would you recommend?

Milk crates. Use your old phone books for more precise height adjustment.

      • There were a heap delivered to my apartment building and put in letterboxes a few weeks ago. They all ended up in a pile in the corner and I imagine in the recycling when the building manager got around to it.

  • They do look like silly racer gamer 420xxx chairs, but I got one of the battlebulls from PLE on sale and I'm happy with it. It's pretty comfortable, and the build quality is very solid- definitely made to take some high intensity (weight) gaming.

Ikea or officeworks for normie chairs. YMMV, I sat on pretty much every chair in Ikea and didn't like any, but I'm pretty big/tall.

    • can you throw up a link to the one you brought? im tossing up between one of them or https://www.catch.com.au/product/thunderx3-bc1-gaming-chair-…

    • If it wasn't for DxRacer donating them to Twitch streamers, no one would buy 'gaming chairs.' Bucket seats are designed to hold your body through lateral G-forces, not sitting at a desk. They're also designed for a car's much lower seating posture, and are actually less ergonomic than regular car seats.

      • Personally, I bought the chair because I found it comfortable.

But, like I said, YMMV, ergonomics are a little bit different for anyone. The Ikea chairs, including the renowned Markus or whatever it is, just didn't do it for me.

I'd never recommend buying a chair without sitting in it for as long as you can.

        • A 'little bit different,' sure, but bucket seats weren't designed for comfort to begin with; it's why they have minimal padding and poor lumbar support. It's also why you see few true bucket seats even in stock sports cars. Secondly, car seats are much lower to the floor, so your knees are raised above your hips, with natural back tilt. They weren't designed to be upright, immoving… at a desk.

Try an actual ergonomic desk chair like an Aeron or Ergohuman. Night and day. Even the affordable Markus is kinder on the spine.

          • @SydStrand: I sat in the Markus, and I hated it.

Edit: anyway, my advice is still exactly the same, YMMV, try before you buy.

I work from home and have been using a Buro Metro task chair Price range $250~300. It's a "decent" chair in the sense that it's ergonomic, but after 3 years+ of use it's starting to creak and the seat cushion starting to compress.

My next chair will probably be an Ergohuman, but it is double the price…

    • +1 to that. The creaking really pisses me off and I've been looking to upgrade for ages.

I'm a huge fan of the Ikea Markus.

If you want the best then get a Herman Miller Aeron. It's fantastic.

I have a couple of the IKEA Markus chairs and they are going strong still after 5 years with moderate to heavy usage.

One of the few chairs my back tolerates for long periods in the budget I am willing to spend.

      • Has both of my Markus more than 5 years as well. Love them.

There's the JÄRVFJÄLLET as well - apparently it will be replacing the Markus eventually. I'll probably just buy another Markus before they stop production :)

I bought them with a friend and family discount for $199, so certainly value for money.

The wife barely uses the second chair, so I figure once mine wears out enough I will just steal that one.

I have the Herman Miller Sayl chair at home and I sit on an Aeron at work. I find the Sayl to be just as good as far as posture goes and a little more stylish imo. I paid about $700 for the Sayl on sale (lol)

Haworth 'Zody' - 10 years of WFH and still a nice chair

  • Standing desk is the way to go IMO. I have tried many chairs Herman Miller, Steelcase etc and always get restless in them after an hour.

  • Steelcase Leap ~$1000 or lower (bargaining), much cheaper 2nd hand.

    Herrman Miller.

  • Used Herman miller for $150

    • From where? Any leads in Melbourne ?

  • Just 'borrow' a good one from your work since it's only a few weeks.

    • Looking for an office chair at the moment and stumbled on this thread. Gotta say, really wish I took one from work now!

And here we still are… This thread is like a little time capsule.

        • I learned an important lesson, don’t buy a cheap chair when you don’t know how long you’ll need it for. Assume you’ll need it forever.

Wound up throwing out the $80 Kogan for a $500 chair. And honestly I wish I spent more, but at least my back doesn’t hurt now. Also bought a new couch this year, old one saw 30 years use in one year.

  • Kogan has an ergolux range that are okay

    • Hey. Do you have any experience with the ergolux range? No reviews out there. Cheers

  • I used product review https://www.productreview.com.au/c/office-chairs to assist me in making my choice.
