Each person's situation is different and insurance is priced accordingly, so the lowest quote for me may not turn out to be the lowest for you. My general experience of best value has been Allianz, however this year NRMA turned out to be much cheaper.
I'm with Allianz for last few years and they have always given me best price compared to other companies out there. Each year I do lot of quotes and still Allianz comes out cheaper…Also one of my friend recently made a claim with them only after signing up for 1 month and he was very happy with the claim process.. Strongly recommended…
With insurance you do need to be careful because the cover will be different, so it's not just a matter of cheapest price. It does take a bit of time to read through the cover details. For example, at one time, GIO covered flooding but NRMA did not by default - I'm not sure if that's still the case these days. You'll probably also want to look at the reputation of the company and how they deal with claims.
My experience with GIO with a large claim due to flooding has been favourable, even though there was a bit of a wait for things to start happening, the builders that they used were very good. In comparison, the builder that NRMA used did not do as good a job for my neighbour. (we got flooded at the same time)
Thanks for the advice guys.
I also found the Canstar website helpful - http://www.canstar.com.au/home-and-contents-insurance/
Ended up with Suncorp…they seemed to be a bit cheaper than everywhere else I tried.
Also got a 15% discount simply by flicking over a CTP insurance to them.
A bit late now sorry, but you need to make sure you have cover for any portable items you may have, if you need it. Some will cover things like cameras, mobile phones and push bikes as standard while others will require them to be listed separately. Even though you've already taken out a policy, it would probably be in your interest to check whether it covers everything you need it to.
Try Australian Unity. I think Choice magazine recommended them among a few.
Yeah, did a quote with them but Suncorp was considerably cheaper.
Commins put up their excess considerably last year without telling policyholders clearly. It makes their policy poor compared to their rivals
Hey Stix
I had the same question on 1.12.2010
