Call to gamers to help with Coronavirus research

Could OZB maybe please make a special post for the front page along the lines of NVidia's call to speed up research for a cure of Covid 19? Some people have very powerful rigs which could help immensely in the research.

Thank you.

No, OP is talking about crowd sourced computing through the internet.

Snake - please research your reply. Otherwise you look like a fool.

@Snake 4: Your lack of understanding of what is actually happening is pretty sad.

          • +6

@Snake 4: They are not asking gamers to do the research.
They are asking gamers to lend their computers' computing power toward the research (via the interweb thing), which is presumably done by actual professional researchers.

@zonra: Of course the research is done by qualified researchers and scientists. It is exactly as you say - what they are asking for is computing power. Gaming PCs are specially suitable as the graphic cards are very powerful for calculations (that is why they are also used for cryptocurrency mining).
I am not sure if Snake 4 is trolling or worse but I guess we can all make up our own mind whichever one it is.

            @Snake 4: Oh … My … God …

Please read the article that is in the OP

Then google what 'folding at home' is

            You might actually learn something

@Snake 4: Did you think gamers where actually doing the research LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

          • @Snake 4: Clearly trolling. Well played sir.

Let's hope they got it right. Otherwise, allowing one's PC for crowd computing for science and research is actually a great and easy way to contribute and utilise the expensive equipment to its fullest.
There are many other useful projects other than this one, often dealing with finding cures for diseases using protein folding simulations and algorithms.

i remember back in 2009 running F@H on my oc'ed gtx295 power suckers for 24/7

was choosing between F@H for stats-penis and bitcoin that worth few cents , wished i made the right choice

I've had my homelab running this for just over a day now. 6 HP ProDesk 600 G2's and 2 5th gen NUCs as well as my gaming computer.

Hard to say if anything will come out of research but it's woth a shot!

Great. Thank you for doing that. I used to have the spare computers in my office at uni running software like this too but when I left the uni deleted it unfortunately.

I wish I could have all my client's PCs and servers running it. Thousands and thousands would make a big difference!

Yea Seti@home was good it ran while the screen saver was on. I done it for a few years.

I remember doing when I was younger. I kinda enjoyed watching it occasionally. I thought it was cool.

It's a good cause but note that you pay for electricity which may be a non-trivial cost.

    • I have cheap government owned power and solar so I'm all good here ;)

  • Is there a COVID cause specifically? I only see cancer, huntingtons, parkinsons and alzheimers

"Any disease" has COVID tasks set as the priority for GPU crunching. They haven't got round to adding the options as they've had to upgrade their servers due to an overwhelming load of people.

A virus in a computer is not the same as a virus in the community

  • Vodafone have a similar app Dreamlab, which uses your phone while you charge it.

  • Great suggestion.
