  • Can the drive be removed and used internally?

    • This drive is an XT Hybrid Drive and it can be removed, unsure if it voids warranty. Worth it just for the drive alone :)

      • +4

GTFO of here. Its not hybrid… is it?

      • +1

This is cheaper than buying an internal 3tb 2.5" sata drive. If you want to crack open the case and use it as internal drive. USB 2.0 is way too slow for an external drive of this size. Obviously opening the case would void warranty.

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmwDI6n-pv8

      • Taken from a Seagate Service post about the GoFlex (a similar, Seagate external): "but the internal drive within the external drive casing should not be removed without our authorization first. Otherwise the warranty is voided and the drive will not be able to be returned."

        • most external drive designed differently
these desktop version GoFlex might be easier to open?
and maybe it's not easy for them to check whether it's been opened? :P

  • Good deal but shipping to WA costs $45.00…

    • Ouch !

    • If you only buy one, you can choose the $9 satchel option. If you have 2+ in your cart, the only option is $45. Makes perfect sense as only one would probably fit into a satchel.

Just make multiple orders? I did the same with PCCaseGear to WA, as two graphics cards cost more to ship, than each in its own express satchel…

  • -6

seagates are fail drives and wow $45 delivery :(

    • +9

"[insert hated brand here] are fail drives"

one can never get a proper review on ANY hard drives at all.

      • +2

Unless it can be proved "statistically", individual experience can hardly mean anything in general.

        • stats don't prove much either

        • stats don't prove much either

WTF…words fail me!!! Dem science geeks don't know nuffin' eh? :o

Now, back to reality. The best & only real stats I've ever seen from a longitudinal study of HDD reliability basically said they're pretty much all the same! ;)

  • How do I do a pickup order?

  • Centrecom meh, i still remember the screw ups!

    • get it at officeworks pricematched..donk

  • -1

OP should really add shipping to the Title, otherwise with the $45 shipping, it's just misleading

    • +1

      but thats only for WA?

  • Should still be able to price Match with officeworks they usually do before delivery.

    • nope….. price match includes delivery….

When price matching online stores we also take into account the added cost of delivery. If the identical product can be purchased and delivered via an online store for a total price lower than the one we are offering, we will beat that total price by 5%.

      • But these guys have stores.

        • Which means if you are lucky enough to go to a OW which has the same unit in stock….3TB external drive = $113.05……

        • Yeah but their only stores are in VIC, doesn't that mean you can only pricematch in VIC?

      • Not always depends on the staff member doin the price matching

  • in delivery page, it shows me a $9 "satchel" option (im in sydney), can i choose this one instead of the $18 shipping to NSW?

  • +5

Is it just me, or is the next cheapest really 200 bux on statice? Even a bare 3TB drive is way more.

    Am I missing something here?

    • You meant crazy 100+ plus vote? if yes, I am with you….it was $175 the cheapest i have seen so far….

      • Yeah, exactly, if it looks like a bargain, smells like a bargain, then this is a bargain! Where is the love though?

I've ordered a couple to crack open and put into my microservers.

  • Dam! Was looking for a 3tb! This def is a bargain!

  • They stock at office works. Maybe price match? :D

  • Going to get one tomorrow if they have it in stock. There's one right next to my school :).

    • +3

      CHROOL STORY, BRO

  • Still thinking there's something off about this, seems too good.
    But meh, getting 2.
    Thanks to OP.

  • damn this is cheap.. i can't find any INTERNAL drives cheaper than 160 in victoria. maybe ill just grab one of these and rip the drive out.

  • And price matched :) from officeworks hell yea!!!

  • So going from the post this can be upgraded to USB 3.0? and How?

Nvm found that you need the adaptor dock that goes underneath the drive

  • +4

    I'm found other good deal

Thank you; You're done a great job!

  • -1

How much to ship to NSW?

  • Thank you OP ! I would give you 10 +'s if I could :D <3

  • lets see if officeworks change their prices so that they don't have to give these discounts

    • Doesnt make sense. They would have to reduce their price to below 119$. Im not arguing with that ;)

    • Doesnt make sense. They would have to reduce their price to below 119$. Im not arguing with that ;)

    • OW will magically run out of stock, rather than reduce the price.

    • +2

mate just got 1 at officeworks for $116 - so disappoint that there was only 1 left :(

      • Nice! Where do you buy it? Can you post the receipt here? Search "tiny pic", upload photo and paste it here.I would really appreciate that.

  • Amazon is having WD Elements 3TB USB2.0 for US$133.45 shipping included so IMO there's nothing off about this deal ..

  • Good bargain if you want OZ warranty.
Amazon.com has them shipped to OZ for U$143.45 = A$132.112
or the WD 3TB for $10 cheaper.

  • Using it right now, Thanks OP.

  • Just got 2 from ow chaddie, 4 left at time of writing.

    • Did you just go in with a print out of the page? And do they need to call Centrecom to confirm stock or anything?

      • +2

Just showed it to the guy on my phone. He didn't need to check with them or anything, I guess since centrecom is fairly well known.

I've had them ring before for smaller places like MLN, but that was during business hours anyway, this one wasn't.

        • Cheers pal, appreciate the help.

    • Got one, makee that two left as of 7:15. Some one around here got in between me and stumo and bought one well.

  • +2

In other news. I can now confirm before my very eyes that the drive inside is a ST33000651AS
    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/desktops/barracuda…

"7200rpm Barracuda XT high-performance desktop drives deliver 2TB and 3TB capacities with a massive 64MB cache and the fastest SATA interface–SATA 6Gb/s."

    No green shight here.

    • No way!
The cheapest for just that drive is 241.99 on staticice!
      http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=ST33000651A…
      Very nice deal here!

      • +2

Tell me about it. Now I kind of wish I'd bought the other 4 I left on the shelf, hmmmm.

This is now in a microserver, bare in mind it is only a SATA2 host…

        • power consumption and speed vs 5K3000 on microserver?
just wondering if its worth it swapping them over

      • +2

your static-icy power is weak! cheapest is $169! :P
        http://www.staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=seagate+xt+…

      • power consumption and speed vs 5K3000 on microserver?
just wondering if its worth it swapping them over

        A mite higher it seems…

        http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_3tb_barracuda_xt_review…

23W startup, 8-10W idle-active unless I am misreading. I think that's about double or so from memory.

I'll only be putting one in.

(damn. missed the correct thread to reply in)

        • in that case might not be really worth it, after factoring noise, power etc..
beside dont really need speed for server, bottle neck seems to be my wifi anyway
just going to get one to store photos

        • Fair call there. Same here also except I want 2xraid5 arrays and bhphoto had a limit of 5 max. This helps round out the second raid5 hence purchase of 1. :) I'll get 4 more once there's a good price for green ones around.

    • not the hybrid then?

      • No. Pretty sure its only the 2.5" XT drives that are hybrids.

    • Awww man! Why did I have to order the WD 3tb drive from Amazon last week?? Much prefer to have this drive!

  • The hdd is 7200rpm, feels pretty fast for the price.

Oops, someone beat me to it.

  • Hey guys, especially the ones who actually have it, is it easy to take out to use in my pc and put back in for warranty's sake?

    • Seems ok to me, I can't see any warranty void type seals on the case, and you can get it apart without breaking anything…
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmwDI6n-pv8

      • thanks mate, in terms of seagate themselves, would they accept the drive alone for warranty or would you have to put it back together (i know its easy, just curious)

also, how do you price match? do you just show them a printed copy of centrecom shop link?

if all goes well, hopefully i'll be picking up 2 of these babies tomorrow morning!

        • Printed copy of the page is probably the best way to go. Maybe show the page on your phone's browser if your printer is out of toner like mine :P You could probably just reference it and get them to look it up/call Centrecom.

Hope there is stock in South Yarra, might have to give Officeworks a call before heading in.

  • Have anyone tried using the dock with another HDD? Seems viable… hmmm

    • I think the guy in the YouTube vid posted above said he did that.

    • Don't see why not, its just a regular SATA connection and generic USB bridge chip.

In fact, I've just checked it with a 2.5" disk I have lying about here and it works fine.

      • Cool, I've always wanted one of those hdd docks. :D

  • +1

Great deal money wise, but reviews are mixed if using it as an external.
    See: http://reviews.cnet.com/external-hard-drives/seagate-freeage…

  • Anyone know if the warranty is 2, 3 or 5 years?

Edit: reviews are great if using it as an internal
    http://www.storagereview.com/seagate_3tb_barracuda_xt_review…

    • Its 3 years.

  • :) thanks. will update tomorrow morning.

  • Just ordered one, been planning on getting an external drive for a while. Thanks.

  • Just called them, they have it in stock, but said will call me back once they call centrecom to check if they have 2 of these in stock :( (because i want 2) and they want to charge the delivery for each, my calcs say $130 each…

Did any of you guys' officeworks have to check stock or just accepted the printout? man my luck with bargains sucks.

    • I went in last night and the guy just went on website, saw that there was stock and price matched 127$ (119 + 8$ postage) and gave me 5% off so 120.65 I paid in the end. :D thou that was last night at 8 pm.. maybe they are aware of it now?

      • when he checked stock, did he check a specific vic store or ?
because i see that half the shops have it and half dont.

        • Yea half the stores have and half dont. I live in qld so I was going to ship it anyway

  • just grab one from syd officeworks, the price is $121.60, still nice just go and grab one.thanks ,OP

  • +1

can anyone post receipts, preferably ACT or NSW?

    • Uupdate OW civic in canberra is sold out. They sold their ones @ $125 after pricematc
      h

  • managed to get 2, it's out of stocks in almost every Officeworks I go to :(

    • which state are u from?

      • VIC, I grab the last 2 on Chadstone stores :P

thanks to stumo & garratt torlesse & unknown guy(or girl)!

  • Syd,alexandria still got one , someone can go and get it.

  • young fella at the Clayton centrecom reckons it isn't on sale until the 9th?? Said you can order online, but can't buy in store? No mention of that on the webpage though. Been to two officeworks and they were both out of stock. Argh!

    • The Centrecom brochure I got in the mailbox states that the promotion starts 09/09/2011 and ends 30/09/2011. So wait until tomorrow before heading into a Centrecom store.

      • Yeah I noticed that when I had a look at the catalog. I ended up calling the Hawthorn store who said they were definitely selling it, so I just went in there and picked it up. Annoying, especially because I thought the Hawthorn store was on Burwood highway, not Burwood rd - d'oh! Got there eventually though. Still would've been 20 units on the shelf at the Hawthorn store.

If people are going to try and price match at OW, avoid Burwood and Carnegie as they are both out of stock - or at least that's what they say ;).

  • Just letting you all know that I just got 3 units from OW @ $119 - 5% :) Very Happy

  • Bought 2 at OW Ringwood. Still have one or two on bottom shelf. They were surprised at price, but matched less 5% after cheking online for stock at Centrecom.

  • OP (petshop), you deserved a metal!
this is truly a BARGAIN! :)

I've been looking for 3TB @ $11x since this happened
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/49729
and I was also mention in this deal that cheapest 3TB is $149
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/51844
    and…you posted this yesterday for $119! :D

this Seagate deal is as good as the Hitachi, but with local warranty + external case!

  • Why everyone is buying from OW? Centrecom has offered the deal but OW is making all the money!

    • I've ordered 2 from centrecom as well. It's on backorder though.
