Coronavirus Profiteering on eBay

Not impressed that eBay is letting some sellers use the coronavirus shortages as an opportunity to profiteer.
A quick search shows toilet rolls and hand sanitiser are being listed at extremely high prices.
Surely, eBay should be responsible enough to discourage this sort of behaviour.
(PROFITEER = "make or seek to make an excessive or unfair profit".)

For some people, not buying = getting sick.

Then you better hope the people who were trying to buy from Gumtree etc managed to find the same stuff elsewhere.

@HighAndDry: yea and I'd hope it would be back at their local shops because the existing supply chain is able to operate without a bunch of gumtree sellers wiping out any stock they can get their hands on

What I always wonder when I see posts like yours is: why are you looking for toilet paper on gumtree in the first place?

      • +2

Seems like a good place to find people who are trying to take advantage of this situation…

But it's by far not the only site where this is happening….

LOL, we've got ourselves a toilet paper vigilante group on ozbargain.

              The Toilet Paper Purge
Once a year, Gronk and his group of vigilantes henchmen from the Guild of Calamitous Intent are given permission by overlord Scotty to cleanse all hoarders of toilet paper. Until one day, derp-di-derp. Rated PG-13.

@kahn: I'd really appreciate if you could pump this out quickly, I'll watch it during the lockdown while sitting in my toilet paper fort, on my toilet paper couch.

          • @kahn: A vigilante group acts outside the law and I'm encouraging the opposite of that…

I reported ~20 listings in my lunch break and they've all been taken down.

Can I nominate you for Australian Of The Year even though they will keep relisting in multiple accounts . Which means a pointless exercise unless you don't value your time .

I'll be at it again tomorrow and the next day, regardless of the negs ;)

If enough of us invest 30-45 minutes I believe we can make a difference…

Well, I needed some TP badly and couldn't find it anywhere til I looked on Gumtree. I was so relieved.

I put the purchase on the back burner but when I came back, the listing has been wiped.

        Thanks a bunch.

    • I dont know what you've reported mine are still up and going strong. Even if you reported, its so eassssy to put them back up.

      • +1

And it's just as easy to have them taken down, 3 clicks in fact :)

          Still up and strong

          • @blackhat77: I'm actually having trouble finding ads to report now, looks to be working a treat :D

    • I encourage ozbargainers to reply to those gumtree sellers that are selling above cost for profit and warn them about this

Gumtree should ban all of essential items sale through their platform, most people on gumtree selling these items are people who bulk buy and turn them over for profit. Ebay should also do the same by limiting the sale for businesses only. This would hopefully discourage people to buy bulk and turn them over on these platforms. Facebook marketplace should also do the same!

What the government can do is to ban selling these items through these platforms.

  • A lot of listings have changed from being buy-it-now to Auction format, so it's just "what the market will pay".

I snoozed a few weeks ago on buying Isopropyl alcohol that I actually use normally, it's not panic buying, and then this hit, so 20L which would have cost me $60 is now trending for as much as $700 :(

I just want clean surfaces so I can continue to make chocolate for people while this all goes on.
