800mm 4WD Recovery Tracks at Bunnings $109

61

Plastic 800mm 4WD recovery tracks at an unlikely location of Bunnings. Unbranded but made in Australia and seem very sturdy. Fine for casual or light 4WD’s, probably wouldn’t be putting a Patrol or Land Cruiser over them!

    • Delivery $30 odd so still cheaper. I would still go the Bunnings ones as you can touch /feel/weigh in store though.

  • Can any vouch for these… Or better to invest in maxtrax?

    • I'd sooner look at (slightly) used maxtrax in your area on marketplace and gumtree. Tried and tested is imho better than some poor quality control lottery tracks.

Plenty of YouTube videos about maxtrax vs generics. For the occasional use the generics perform just as well for a fraction of the price.

Of course if you're going out every weekend then probably stick to the good stuff

      • If you're going out every weekend try not to get bogged every weekend.

fwiw the X-Bull ones are quite popular.
    $79.90 on Amazon.

    Compared to the Maxtrax.

  • I have max traxs as do my mates better go with a reputable brand

'Me and my friends bought the more expensive ones, therefore you should too!'

      • If u watch all the 4x shows they all use max traxs
As the quality far outways the cost u can get max trax
As low as $175 some times

That's because of sponsorship deals and the fact they have the budget.

You never see tv shows use generic brands.

I'm not anti maxtrax as they are clearly proven to be good.
But this is ozbargain Afterall and if we can help others save a buck then it's worth considering alternatives.

As with any tool you intend to use more than once - buy the best you can afford, not the cheapest you can find. If this is what you can afford then it's better than cut up and zip tied milk crates. If you are into 4WDing then just get the Maxtrax.

But isn't that like saying, nobody should go 4WDing unless they can afford a Land Cruiser? There are plenty of people who still have a great time with a Ford Ranger, Jeep Wrangler, Patrol, Pathfinder…

There's a place for cheaper gear. If you just go 4WDing 2-3 times a year, cheaper gear could be perfectly suitable. If you go every week, then of course it'd make more sense to buy the best gear. But not everyone's fully hardcore offroaders - someone might just need a set for when they take the family out to a beach twice a year.

“There are plenty of people who still have a great time with a Ford Ranger, Jeep Wrangler, Patrol, Pathfinder…”

One is not like the other. A Patrol is as good, if not better, than a Land Cruiser offroad.

Can you still have fun with the "inferior" Land Cruiser?

The point is, you don't need to buy the best of everything to enjoy something.

Glad I wasn't the only one that had a cringe moment at that part … 😁

We have a 4WD, done the Cape, Ngkala Rocks Big Red etc. Cheapies do the same job as Max/Treds.

Hint: Buy bright coloured ones. Had to pull up at Ngkala Rocks due to oncoming. Bugger, got bogged reversing. As my youngest retrieved the (cheapo Rockarmors) recovery tracks, he dug out a sand coloured generic, left behind from some previous recovery.

These things aren't precision tools. They are bits of plastic that provide traction.

So long as they don't break, then the cheapies will do fine.
I think the YouTube reviews say it all.
You'd really have to be punishing it to destroy it, and even then I'd think that'd happen gradually.

The generics on kogan and eBay are several times cheaper than maxtrax so if say they're worth a punt.

I honestly don't understand why maxtrax are so expensive. It's a bit of injection moulded plastic…

A bit of rope could be more useful, especially if you get creative.

    • It happens very quickly. Takes one wheel spin to destroy it

  • +1

Sticks and rocks are the go. Stuff carrying these things around for 2 years before you ever need them

    • You’re welcome to carry sticks and rocks in your car but I think I’d prefer a set of these.

A real ozbargainer just uses their floor mats.

Thanks OP, perfect for my Jimny and my pocket.

I bought $60 ones on eBay that are a bit longer than these. Have used a few times and they worked well. There's a review on YouTube by some WA 4x4 enthusiasts who compare these to the premium brands.
