You can get an Optus sim and activate it over live chat in order to avoid recharging.
You can also get a free Telstra sim and no recharge is required

I used Telstra's $2 SIM maybe a year or two ago without credit but you had to click on the right option (whatever that was).
(I've had maybe 6 Belong numbers that way but I wouldn't give them my primary number anymore after hearing some horror stories of immediate bans)
Do Telstra warn you when a prepaid sim with credit is about to be cut off or whatever? I use a telstra sim with no credit as my main number that i've had since the "3" network was a thing, and another sim that I actually have credit on. So I don't have to tell people my new number, only if I text them back on it do I need to explain. but will telstra suddenly cut that number off one day after six months or whatever?

I'm guessing one day they will warn me via text and I'll need to put a $10 charge on it. I dunno.
