Lost Luggage Troubles. Need advice.

When returning to Adelaide with my family from an international flight with Qatar Airways we lost two pieces of luggage: could not find a suitcase and a backpack on the carousel. We immediately approached the Dnata Baggage Services and filled a form. Later, in a couple of days, we received an email that said investigation may take 21 days and also a call from a person who did not identify himself. He said the bags were delivered all the way to Adelaide and insinuated that somebody we know took the missing luggage from the carousel.

Twenty one days later they ask for an extension ostensibly because they needed a report from another airport. One more week passes and now they say openly that the investigation is over, the bags arrived in Adelaide, they saw the CCTV footage and the missing luggage "were received". In the passive voice, but still implying we did it.

Tomorrow will be heading to a police station to file a report and get them to let us see the footage.

Any advice is welcome.

P.S. My tip: have travel insurance. Never needed it before despite many travels.

My tip: have travel insurance. Never needed it before despite many travels.

That's the nature of insurance. No-one needs it until something happens. lol

    • If only you could buy insurance only when you needed to claim something 🤦‍♂️

OP travelling internationally without insurance, sheesh

  • Claim through your travel insurance and let them do all the work.

  • This is why insurance exists, but I suppose you know and don't need to keep being told this.

In terms of advice, there's next to no advice that can help you. Police are not likely to really do anything useful in this case. Airline will just try to wash its hands of any issues.

  • Did you try and see if the bag tracks on the Qatar site
    https://haqiba.qatarairways.com.qa/baggagetracking
You could try a company like this, https://www.populetic.com/en/claim-qatar-airways/luggage-com…
who will pursue a claim from the airline but take a cut of any pay out, 25%+VAT (think they are UK based)

baggage collection at the airport is a weird thing. after all the security getting onto the flight you can just grab a bag and walk off. especially domestic flights, you can just wander in off the street without catching a plane at all
so as long as you aren't caught with contraband, score!

but they all have tags on them identifying the owner with barcodes and a printed name. it would be so easy to prevent theft with a slight glance/scan as you exit

    • Eh, the fact you'd have to have gotten off a flight would cut down on the number of opportunistic/deliberate bad actors, plus like you said, always the chance of contraband. Also, you'd assume the actual owner would also be nearby and the risk is somewhat similar to having your home broken into at night when people are home and inside a gated community. Non-zero but also much lower than in the outside world.

  • Police won't take a report. Simply claim on your insurance.

  • check you didn't unknowingly have travel insurance on your credit card…

TLDR get travel insurance next time.

So, did you ask to see the CCTV? If so what was the response?

Did police tell you to visit to make a report? reports these days are online/over phone

Do the police have this footage?

  • Police would rightly tell you to fvck off
