Confused? Buy 2060 Super now or wait for 3060_?

I have a 1060 6gb with an old i5-4690 8gb blah blah.

Thinking of upgrading gpu but my timing is always off buying tech gear… got swindled on the iPhone 5s —-> 6 transition.

Is the RTX3060__? rumoured to be cheaper and better than last gen?

I play a lot of AAA titles Far Cry and Ass Cread, so I've also seen some pretty good deals on here through techfast.. Something?

It was $800 ish, with 6 core Ryzen ( I think my cpu has been holding back my frames especially on Poopysoft's AssCreed). I think it comes with a founder's 1070.

So to summarise: what ppls thoughts on upgrading to a newer system (CPU) and 1070 or just swap out to a 2060 something or wait for 30_30__series?

I only really play at 1080p, love locked 60+ and am a sucker for the graphical eye candy.

I'm pretty sure the 1060 should do everything you need if it's just 1080p 60 frames.

  • Mm, yeah for some games it is fine. But Creed Odysey it struggles. I believe 6 cores systems are doing much better in heavily populated areas
and on newer games in general.

I do like to max out settings. I've had it OC'd for a while now. But it's been struggling lately.

I'm.just not sure if a new gpu will see me through on my 4690 ($550/$599 = RTX2060S)

or get one of these new pre made systems (Ryzen 5 3600 + 1070 = $838)

The blah blah can make a difference too, especially with 8gb ram. Ram is pretty cheap, either another 8gb or 16gb of faster speed, and also making sure you run your OS and games from an SSD vs a hdd. They are must haves for upgrading old systems, then whatever you can afford for this graphics card that is compatible with your mobo.
You are probably already doing these things, so it might be time for a new techfast system and salvage any ssd's or extras you can for the new beast.
At 1080p I reckon you will max your monitor refresh rate with a $1200-1500 system from one of these specials you see every few days.

    • Thanks for the reply, I've got it running off a Samsung SSD, and overkill 1000w G2 EVGA supernova. But the Ram is only 1600 ddr3.

So like you say I'm tempted to just upgrade the system to a newer chipset and ram speed. I feel like its well over due, since 4th series.

My thinking is I can go techfast and update way cheaper than simply buying R5 mobo ram etc separately. And just sell the case and PSU that I dont need.

R the techfast conpany/systems "trust worthy"? I've never bought from them.

      • I have a system from just before Xmas, all sweet. You can save some money by supplying your own Windows 10 Activation key, Kinguin have them for about $40-50
They must have sold thousands on Ozbargain and I haven't heard of any issues.

  • cpu is a factor, but gpu dictates most in gaming
also depends whether you'll be upgrading your display monitor (resolution & refresh)
if you're planning ultrawide 3440x1440 , that 1070 hardly cut it

spending $800+ to get from 1060-6gb to 1070 is not worth it
yes you get a better cpu but it hardly reflects on gaming when you're gpu bound

rtx3060 won't be here anytime soon, as nvidia will launch 3070/3080 1st then only 3060 after a quarter or two, that's if no delays from coronavirus (and possible price hike on most PC parts)

most likely you'll see amd 5800/5900xt released together with rtx3070/3080
5700xt is priced at 2060S level but performs like 2070S, or even 2080 level when you OC it, whilst the new driver seems to solve most glitches

If you don't want to wait till year end and want the upgrade right now, whilst looking to squeeze best bang of buck, then get the 5700xt and swap cpu below.

    • I think I'll be staying 1080p on my 144hz monitor or I sometimes plugin to my 4K 55' TV but it only runs in 4K or 1080p. So until I win lotto and can get something to run at native I probably only need a 1070 at most.

I think your right about there possibly being delays and price hikes throughout the year.. yay croney!

I love that there some completion back in the market, i used to love AMD gear, so im happy to switch to Ryzen. But im not yet convinced on the GPU's. So ill probably stay green for that. I got burnt on the r 390…

I'm tempted to just upgrade the system to a newer chipset and ram speed. I feel like its well over due, since 4th series.

I think I'll pull the trigger on the techfast, get a 6core and faster ram, splice it with my PSU, SSD and case n fans. And at least I won't be getting fewer frames but have a newer system.

  • Wait for the next gen, see comparable performance, at worst you will get an older gen even cheaper, at best you get the latest gen for the current price of the last gen right now.

    • That's true. Thats what I have been thinking but my system probably needs updating from 4th series. Yet I feel like 20 series will drop over the next few months. Hard to know.

  • Thanks peeps! the title probably should have been upgrade rig VS GPU.? But i think I need to upgrade the system to a newer chipset and ram speed. I feel like its well over due, since 4th series.

I'll pull the trigger on the techfast, get a 6core and faster ram, splice it with my PSU, SSD and case n noctua fans. And at least I won't be getting fewer frames but ill have a current system and can always swap out the GPU later and sell it on Gumtree.

Wow it's been years since I've had a Red PC, not since my FX8350

Can anyone comment if it's worth upgrading the mobo from what they offer in the base system config? I know nothing of their chipsets (although it's still using AM4)

    • upgrade rig VS GPU.?

sounds like you want a new system, more than a gaming upgrade

newer chipset & faster ram speed, are nothing compared to gpu upgrade
you can play 4k native on your TV with 5700xt

techfast build is only worth it when one don't spend anymore upgrading it
by the time you upgrade everything except cpu, might as well build your own
if you don't overclock, there is no need to upgrade mobo

      • Yeah i think bouncing it around on here made me realise I really need to update my system first.

Hopefully I can chug along till the 3060 gets released later this year or next.

  • Best practice to wait 2 gens before jumping anyways. The single gen difference normally isn't worth the price.

Unless you really think you need it, I'd hold for the 3060/a hopeful 6600xt (though a reasonably full gpu line from AMD in a reasonable amount of time seems to hopeful)
