Miley Ray Cyrus Cancels Australian Visit - Coronavirus

Apparently Miley Ray Cyrus has cancelled her visit to Melbourne. Not a big deal for me, not a fan, and I had seen tickets discounted by 30% earlier today.

But - the reasons:
"Due to the recommendations of local, state, federal and international government authorities, including the Center for Disease Control, to reduce potential health risks in response to the current global health crisis, we are no longer traveling to Aus for the show"

And yet the Grand Prix is still scheduled for this coming weekend.

I'm not panicking but there doesn't seem to be any strong, constructive leadership on this matter.

What are your thoughts?

I had to look that up. Well played, but I don't think she had flown in.

Not sure what you want, lol.

    • I would like some leadership.
Someone with credibility, making strong decisions to protect the residents of this country.

        What would that look like?

        Who do you consider credible?

        making strong decisions

        What's a strong decision?

Seems like what needs to be said has already been said.

        • The Health Dept info is great, but it is info only. I've seen various doctors etc., making recommendations.
But the governments seem to be hanging back.

Whatever you might think about the stance taken by Italy earlier today, at least that is a strong decision. And it would appear that the population is complying.
To support Italy, the EU has approved extra spending outside of EU budget rules.

            @GG57: The health department…

(If only you could hear me laugh. Seriously).

Our local health minister just made some stupid comment this morning "for the good of the people". All she did was mock a respected physician for being unaware he had the virus based on official list of symptoms he did not have.

For the good of the people!

            • @[Deactivated]: I was referring to the info at the link provided by ozhunter.

Yes, ministers in our governments are good at making statements to get in the press, but not so good at decision making.

Shut the borders? Build a wall?

Get all the 'Karens' together to change things?

Not sure there's enough tin-foil to protect us all

        • Our federal Minister for Health today made comments that sounded like it is all a bit too hard to manage incoming passengers (oh, unless they come from China, Sth Korea or Iran, but Italy is ok).

Shouldn't we be able to put in some controls for all international flight arrivals. Check temperatures of all arriving passengers. Review their travel history. Give the passengers directives based on that information.

We already do this. I went through all that in early Feb.

            • @[Deactivated]: I went through immigration in early Feb. Our passports were (very quickly) flipped through and we were asked if we had been to China.
              Nothing else.

              • @GG57: Temperature checks are carried out via infrared video.

    miley ray virus

  • so she slid away?

United States have 213 confirmed cases. We have 62.
They have a population of 372M, we have 24.6M.

She needs to get over it. I'm sure between flying in on a private jet, driving to a stadium in a limo with her entourage and then back to her jet and back home she will contract the virus.

Your stats not going to help your argument, which mean Aus has more Corona cases than US, based on the proportion :)

      • +2

My point is that while there is statically a higher chance of catching it here, it's not like we're Italy with thousands of infected.

        • +3

Or she could be genuinely worried about having concert here will help to spread it even faster, as we got higher stats and also she is a sucker for aussie guys ;)

        • As of today yes.

    • She should spend time in quarantine.

    Good.

    Well played COVID-19… well played

If ticket sales had been discounted by 30%, I'd guess the tour was cancelled due to poor ticket sales.

No point coming out to play to empty venues.

    • Same email had Robbie Williams 30% off and about 7 theatre productions / musicals all heavily discounted.
A couple of weeks ago tickets for Alice Cooper were discounted by 65%.

      • +3

If they gave a free roll of toilet paper to each ticket holder, it would be a sell out

I think it could be due to her dad, as he had previous heart problems.

    • +3

Genuinely laughing my arse off at this one.

  • I highly suspect this has more to do with her "achy, breaky heart" than COVID-19. Liam has moved on.

  • I would suggest it's a combination of her agents believing that less people will travel to attend as well as the venue providing warnings on how they will mitigate the risk of large gatherings. This then leads to (whoever makes the decision) to call it off. I doubt she will lose much by not attending, the biggest loser will be the venue.

With the F1 A LOT more money is lost, not just from the venue, but from a large number of local and international business (including television rights world-wide). I suspect the turnout will be down on previous years, but that will be a drop in the ocean. This also affects decisions in the future - When contracts come up to decide on keeping it in Melbourne or moving elsewhere.

Saying that, I heard they announced that if any of the F1 teams gets excluded because of where they have been, then the F1 cancels the whole event.

    • They could run the F1 without the crowd. Most of the money is in the global tv rights, not at the actual event. It is more disruptive than it is a bonus, apart from some specific businesses.

The Miley Ray Cyrus concert was to fundraise for bushfire relief.

  • I suspect she was jumping on the celebrity band wagon who recently did concerts for the bushfires, but she never really had any intentions of following thru. She just wanted to look like she cared, while in reality it hasnt drummed up as much support or any more insta followers, so she sawit was a fruitless exercise.

I, not a fan of her music anyway, so no great loss.
