Recommendations on Laptop - Slim, light weight, fast, reasonably priced

Hi there,

I am hoping this chat forum can assist. I am currently hunting around for a new Laptop.

I have an old Toshiba laptop past it's use by date. I reckon it's at least 10 years old (at a minimum), and it's so very slow, thick and heavy, so I am wanting to upgrade.

I am not into playing games, so it'll be used for working at home / offsite streaming and general surfing of the internet.

I am looking at something light weight and slim, and also fast on start up / opening applications/browsers.

As for a budget, I am open. I am thinking 1k, but I am unsure if this is reasonable or not? (It's been a while since I have purchased a computer).

I have been to Harvey Norman and JB, although they have quite a lot there and it's become a headache trying to understand the technicalities etc.

I don't know too much about computers, so not looking for something that I won't use.
I probably won't use it all that much as for work it'll only be a few days a week when I am working at home.

Thanks guys for any help!

Daniel

  • Could not go wrong with ideapad s530. Light, slim and fast for the usage you mentioned and it's on sale until tomorrow

  • How long do you want it to last? I’m still using my MacBook Pro from 2015 and there is no noticeable degradation in OS performance and I use it every day. Got it for 1750 with a 20% discount. It might be a higher upfront cost but 350 a year so far it’s proving to be quite resilient.

    • I am thinking to get a macbook as well. Cannot afford the latest ones and looking at 2015 model as they dont have the "Butterfly Keyboard" and has all the ports and even SDXC. However, the price on ebay and gumtree are quite high around 1200 1300.
Should I buy 5 years old macbook or look for something similar windows based laptop. I know I can get decent laptops for the similar price.

      Suggestions?

      • The keyboard issue is a hard one and it’s a deal breaker for a lot of people. Check whirlpool forums as there is a rolling thread on MacBook sales. I was goi g for a 30% discount but the line on the TRS counter was too long and I thought I was going to miss my flight but there may be situations where you can can 20%.

Also the Apple site also has refurbished MacBooks so check them out as well.

  • I agree with the above post in principle. I have a late 2013 Macbook pro that still runs just as well as it ever has.

Pushing on $250 a year by now.

I'm thinking I need to use a different OS soon though. I'm sick of apple.

Even a 8th gen refurb macbook air\pro would be such a substantial upgrade for you I think it would be hard for you to be disappointed.

    • Maybe get a model with a 1tb hard drive so you can partition and install another OS. I wish I’d gotten more than 128gb in retrospect.

I might dig out my 2011 air and see how that runs.

If you can stretch your budget to 1.2-1.4k, I'd recommend a "refurbished" latitude 7300 or latitude 7400, business grade - direct from Dell AU (subject to stock availability), it comes with 3 years of next business day onsite warranty (technician comes to YOU).

Disclaimer: I work for a different Dell Technologies subsidiary.. and have bought over 8 refurbished business grade laptops and been extremely happy, I don't work for Dell Computers.

  • Perhaps something with an SSD will reduce the times on loading. I'd consider a used laptop like Lenovo Thinkpad line or Dell Latitude products as they are built well.
