      Your opinion is uncommon.

This beer is great if you want to get smashed for $10 at the Shanghai airport, otherwise grab something else

    • +2

good luck getting drunk for 50 rmb in a chinese airport. the prices are similar to western prices. i paid 100 rmb for beef noodles

      • cans of tsingtao were 8rmb each at the little convenience shops when I was there last year

        • right i forgot about the convenience stores. always felt weird drinking alcohol in the waiting areas

  • +2

A bunch of losers above would rather drink piss I reckon, interesting……

I use to work at a bar that had these for sale. Every time tourists from China came up to buy drinks they would browse then do a double take and go what the hell and ask me if they can look at it then proceed to crack up, because to them it’s like the shittest beer they have.

    • +14

That's a load of crap. Tsingtao even have their own annual beer festival in Tsingdao, China and it's a big event.

Maybe the tourists were surprised their local beer made it outside of China.

Not sure why I’m getting downvoted for recounting an incident. Not like I’m fabricating it. I don’t drink so I wouldn’t be able to tell if it’s good or crap beer but I assume it’s Chinese oZbargain imperialists downvoting me.

But hey like I said I didn’t understand what they were saying since I don’t speak mandarin, but got it translated and they were alluding to that it was the cheap beers like a VB of theirs.

        • +5

I suspect others, like myself, took it that you came to your own conclusion that the Chinese tourists think tsingtao beer was the worst ("shittest").

Whereas others are thinking the surprise these tourists had could be novel surprise of finding their local beer in a foreign bar (and one that is definitely an affordable beer). They might have thought they'd find a premium selection of local / international beers on offer. Like Australians finding a local drop overseas.

Also I would think the popular opinion with people who have had this beer (esp. Chinese) find this beer "pretty good" as your everyday drink, and one that at least meets the taste/palate for the Asian market. If it was a crock, regardless of how cheap, it surely wouldn't be as popular in consumption in Asia and abroad.

Beers are way cheaper in China, you are paying 10 times or more in a bar here for the same thing. That's why the tourist would make sure it's the same beer and drink it when back home and laughing, maybe at you too.

They have no idea then. I've been to China a few times and they have some very suspect, very cheap beers - many much worse than Tsingtao. The vast majority of Chinese are very poor and drink some awful stuff. The ones that can afford to travel can probably afford better beer.

i believe even the locals are now drinking “corona” instead.

This is a pretty average Lager - and Australians love Lagers, everything from VB to Tooheys and XXXX actually are Lagers. So very light in colour, crisp and maybe if you're lucky a slight hop aroma. I'd imagine being CHinese they've probably used a decent amount of Rice malt in the making of it - neither a good nor bad thing.

IMHO you'll find this a class below even entry level German and eastern Euro Lagers - it's nothing to turn your nose up at and very good as a clean, refreshing drink on a hot day but there's not a lot of complexity to it and I don't find for it's price it's overly compelling buying.

    • I believe the Germans taught them how to make beer… with moderate success.

      • The brewery was established by German expats.

  • Beer snobbery is the cringiest aspect of this website. Nobody cares what you think of this beer.

      wahhhhh

    • +1

Same with coffee . I’ll take servo coffee for $2 over a barista one for $4.50 any day

  • My local independent had this for 33 bucks last week but sold out, I actually walked past it because I am still drinking my 10 buck iron Jack cases. Not a bad beer

      • +1

just get the tsingtao. bonus Coronas with every slab

Are you implying and generalizing that everything chinese made has the corona virus? Don't fuel racial sentiments aye.. #diversity

        • I am Chinese so you can’t posibly call me rasist. 😝

          • +1

@tomsky: Racism and discrimination exists in all walks of life irrespective of race, religion and nationality. It’s a common misconception that if you’re a particular race, you can’t be racist. Food for thought 🙂.

  • errrr were they brewed this year or last year?
Hard pass if it's 2020 vintage.

  • +5

insert brain-dead joke about corona virus or corona because you want to be funny and fit in with the crowd

We live in a country with an incredible range of good beer…why would you drink this crap?
    Probably a Corona beer lover…..lol

    • +1

We are on OzBargain, where sometimes….price dictates our choices irrespective of quality 😀. Personally, I'll stick to Kilkenny and Corona (with lime) 😂

    • and what beer do you drink dynaflow?

    • +1. The local craft scene is innovative and fun
