Recommend a 4K Monitor for Multitasking, Programming, Web Dev, Video Editing, CAD and Occasional (Light) Gaming?

I'm looking for an IPS 4K monitor for multitasking, programming, web dev, video editing, CAD, watching movies and occasional, light gaming (I certainly have no aspirations of being a competitive gamer). I'm on a budget so cheaper = better but I am looking for something decent. I guess I'm looking for something around the 27" - 32" mark? I found a website that recommends the LG 27UK650-W but this does not seem to be available in Australia.

The main reason I am looking for a 4K monitor, aside from the possibility of watching movies in 4K, is that I do a lot of multitasking and my laptop has only one HDMI port (and is unable to output video through the USB-C port) so outputting to multiple external monitors is not an option.

Any suggestions?

IPS ones are significantly more expensive. If you compromise on MVA panel (slight colour shift with different viewing angles, but nothing as bad as TN panel), you can save a lot. I like the 32UK550 personally, and I've persuaded half the people in our office to get one and they all love them too.

Note: I have a Mac laptop, and I have found that it really struggles with 4K due to the way apple's retina scaling works (lag+loud fans). 1440p would be the max I would use on Mac laptop. This is my own opinion, as I am a very hard user of many apps at once. If you're a light user you may not have these problems.

    • This looks great! I think you have convinced me on the 32UK550, and by the looks of it I probably can't afford a comparable IPS anyway. Now I just have to find the cheapest place to buy this model…

      • You found any cheap place for 32UK550?:)

You can probably get it for less than $4k

  • I’ve been using an Asus Designo 27” for all of the above applications and loving it. Pricey though but the panel quality is pretty high and does 60hz. Model number is mx27uq, price actually went up compared to when I got it late 2017.

  • If you aren't doing a lot of video editing, I highly suggest that you go with a 1440p ultrawide. Much better productivity wise, especially in programming.

    • Thanks for the suggestion, and I would certainly consider a 1440p ultrawide over the 4K if I wasn't planning to use this monitor as my TV :)

I bought this one https://www.umart.com.au/LG-27in-UHD-IPS-HDR400-Monitor--27U… on the weekend. Seems pretty good. The HDR is really shit though, so I just keep it off, maybe find one without that gimmick for cheaper.

Otherwise, it's slim, 27", IPS panel and 4k.
