A while back someone at a picnic I went to had a Helinox chair, which I found quite interesting. I don't recall if they had the Zero or the One, though now that I look at the pictures again, I think they had the Zero.

I looked about for cheaper alternatives, and discovered the Zephyr Chair which deadset looks almost identical (other than the back is solid material and not mesh).

It is about 400g heavier packed, only has a load capacity of 110kg vs 145kg, and probably only enjoys 1 year warranty instead of 5.

The Helinox also has a bajillion accessories, which I do not know if they might be compatible with this knockoff - given the dimensions are a bit off, I suspect they are not.

Either way, this was only $49.99 vs $149, and given I didn't need a camping chair that often, I doubt I'll miss not having those accessories.

I bought it about a week ago, and have been breaking it in and it's been quite good. You will find it very difficult to put together the first few goes as the material needs to stretch a little first, but it gets easier. My tip is to do two opposite corners first, then the remaining short section, then finally the last long section as the long sections have a pouch like area to pull on, allowing you to exert the necessary force.

  • Can't beat the $5 camping chair from kmart. They last forever too. https://www.kmart.com.au/product/basic-camp-chair/2127463

Oh I certainly expect there to be cheaper chairs - I was specifically looking for an ultralight, which does make things interesting.

      • $65 for a naturehike one off aliexpress. Much better build quality, 1.1kg packed with 150kg rating.

        • Right now, I wouldn't expect anything from Aliexpess to arrive anytime soon… :(

Pretty good price. I picked up a few clones like this from Amazon a while ago for around $35ea, but better to get local warranty.

I've got the helinox zero. Definitely rate it, it's something I've taken on multi day backcountry snow trips and it really does make a difference not sitting on your sleeping mat!

    • I've had the original helinox for about 7 years (looks like the One), it's been on many great adventures in harsh conditions and is still going strong.
In that time I've been through a couple of cheaper chairs (aldi, and another I forgot) with similar design that haven't lasted (used just by adventure guests).

I definitely rate the helinox, but every time I look at the price these days I shy away and go back to old trusty.. hope it survives.

I bought similar chairs at macpac for $39, they're mainly for the kids when we go camping but we've used it at outdoor movie nights and they're great cause they are so small and light compared to a normal camping chair

thats the link, you do need to sign up as macpac member which is free to get this pricing.

Aldi also does a version of this. Had mine for many years before some teens took it out last winter: http://offers.kd2.org/en/au/aldi/pNTx/
I never took it hiking but it was really good for keeping in the car for kid's sport and also made a surprisingly comfy extra chair or footrest when camping

    • Thanks for reminding me, forgot I had the aldi version somewhere, now to find it..

  • I have this, used it a couple of times. I'm at the upper range of what you would load this up with lol. Its not exactly a stable chair, but its fine as long as you dont mince about in the seat, or have too many beers.

  • I bought one of these from ebay which looks very similar for only 30 bucks posted. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/362279140094

I use mine for kayak camping and it works well and seems tough enough. ive seen and tested the helinox version (which these are all chinese copies of) in store. yes they appear nicer but not worth the $100 buck difference in my opinion.

  • I’ve had this high backed one for about a year and have been pretty impressed with it. https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B073W2PZY4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i…

  • Love this kind of chair. I bought a Kogan marketplace lightweight camping chair called the butterfly chair (the camping one not the fancy indoor one) as it was advertised as 600g which was the closest to the helinox that I could find. Turned out it was 885g.. probably similar to the other knock offs on eBay etc. Now being advertised as approx 750g, ha.

Still a very light chair and surprisingly comfortable. The main issue is for people that have trouble pushing themselves up from a low chair.

It takes a bit of effort to set it up. The aluminium legs with elastic inside flip open into their plastic holders satisfyingly quickly but the fabric seat portion takes a bit of wrangling to get the last corner on.

After setting it up, if moving short distances I would just carry it rather than fold it down and back up again because it's so light, just a bit unwieldy.

Check out the real weight on these chairs rather than the advertised weight if weight is important.

I have a $5 Kmart chair as well, it is normal seating height for a camping chair and not too bulky compared to a normal camping chair. I like the helinox knock off much more for comfort, if you need to carry it, and if space is a premium.

  • Thanks OP. Do you know where I can find a deal on a dog camping bed by chance?
