Parking for Students in SA

Edit: Sorry for the confusion; I'm coming from Northern suburbs and the trip in general is not great without a car, I started out taking 2 buses and the connecting trips were unreliable (bus either doesn't show up or leaves before it's meant to)

I'm currently in a degree at Flinders Uni but the majority of my course work takes place in Adelaide CBD. Last year I used a discount provided by Wilson parking to get $10 student rate parking, but the discount isn't working as of this year. I rang them up and the person talking to me offered no help, repeating "you need to get a discount code from your uni". I told them I got the voucher via Wilson. He didn't help me so what are the options for a once a week park in the cbd at around the same cost?

  • Did you try going to your Uni about the discount code? It might not have been what you did last time, but surely given the amount of students that would deal with this sort of parking arrangement, the Uni would have someone there that knows what's available to you?

    • Our particular degree is quite different, 90% of it is in the myer centre (ie. Public transport accessible) but then one day a week our classes are at Flinders. I will reach out to them regardless.

      • Even though your particular course doesn’t require constant travel in to the CBD, I’d be amazed if they didn’t have something available in the CBD for students to use.

        • I just received a response and the uni does not provide anything for people outside of the Bedford/Tonsley campus. Ouch.

          • @TeamSAXON: Is there someone that can be escalated to? If your units or whatever require you to travel to a specific location (CBD) and there isn’t adequate public transport to get you there, surely there needs to be provisions made available to you

Check out a few options there. Tram from Entertainment Centre could be a cheap option.

        • Thank you, I'll look at anything that is easy to access!

    Devil's advocate:
    - Do you need to drive?
    - Is public transport not an option?

Yeah they need to drive. Flinders is a pain to get to situated in a crazy spot with terrible bus access.
On a whole our public transport is terrible. What is a 20 minute drive along the beach is over 2 hours on multiple modes of public transportation. It's also just plain terrible. The price keeps going up but the quality keeps going down. In some instances it's cheaper for an Uber.

Isn't the Tonsley train station nearby? That should take you straight to the city? Student pricing for public transport is cheap ($1.87 peak, $1 between 9am-3pm). Full price is a bit much, however. Otherwise, the G21 from Flinders departs every 15mins to the City.

I get it's more convenient to drive, but you're not without cheap alternate options. Public transport is fiiiiiine.

Define nearby. We also don't know where he's departing from. The closest train or bus stop from me is over 20 minute walk and the bus comes once an hour, usually late and the train is full of dangerous people. I'm near West Lakes/Semaphore. That's not even a bad area.
Also if you're happy with fiiiiiine, that's fine. OP and I clearly aren't/weren't. Different horses for courses. Our public transport is terrible by any other standard in Australia in my opinion and it's only getting worse. More strikes, more service cuts, higher expenses and am I the only one who carries no other cards except the annoying metrocard? Why can't it be on my phone too.

          • @lette: If you simply mentioned at the start that you just wanted to complain about everything, you could've saved me even trying to be helpful in the first place.

Adelaide is one of the easiest cities to navigate between Public Transport, driving options (combined with park-and-ride, and even free tram services), great bike access (mostly off road), and — as you mentioned — even catching an Uber is affordable due to the smaller size of the city.

You don't have to like all the options, but there are plenty of them.

@lewislardboy: Thought it was obvious all I wanted to do was complain about the public transport system. My bad. The original question was asking about public transport and I've got an opinion. A strong one.
Again. That's fine if you like it. I don't. I do use an electric scooter, usually fine to navigate in SA, better in Perth though, but I'm fairly certain that's illegal in the suburbs anyway, so moot point.

        • The problem with that is I still have to get into the city, either by driving to a train station or by bus. Driving is literally the least convoluted way to get there and then be back in the city for my other classes. It's a weird situation.

      • Public Transport on the West Side is horrible. Bus from the NE side to flinders only takes about 50mins, and that's crossing the CBD.

        • I know people at flinders who can give discounts.

          • @Ughhh: I was told by Flinders they offer no such discounts for parking in the city.

    • I should have been more specific; certain days ie. One day a week I go from Clearview (which is around enfield), to Flinders, then back into the city for classes and connecting buses (I have to catch two) are themselves very unreliable. Every other day I catch the bus.

There used to be free parking on the north side of the River Torrens when I was in uni. Not too sure if it's still available. There's also free parking on/around West terrace near marcellinas. On the side streets mainly.

  • Park along the tram line and then commute in. On student pricing, I think it's under $4 a day. Trams run every 5 minutes during peak and are generally safe, don't tend to get too many ferals during the day and there is security on them at night. Always plenty of parking at the stops between South Road and Marion Road, just make sure you check the signs so you park on the correct side of Glengyle Ave or Pleasant Ave as they restrict one side for traffic flow during weekdays. Trip is around 15-20 minutes into town depending on what stops you need and often faster than driving during these times.

    • I'll look into that

      • I'll also add - the $4 a day is the tram fare on a metro card, not the cost of parking! The parking is free :)

        • I'll have to properly look at it, as I'm coming from Northern suburbs and the trip in general is not great without a car, I started out taking 2 buses and the connecting trips were unreliable (bus either doesn't show up or leaves before it's meant to)

          • @TeamSAXON: Yeah I didn't realise that from the OP, it sounded like you were coming from Flinders. It's been over 15 years since I commuted on buses to Flinders, sounds like nothing has changed with their reliability!

            • @Brightland: Yeah sorry for the confusion! I'll amend the original post.. But yes the reliability is naught
