Wilson ProStaff 97L Tennis Racquet $99.99 (RRP $300), Wilson Tour Balls $7.99 + $9 Shipping (Free over $150) @ Tennis Direct

180

Cheapest ever! Wilson must be dumping this racquet. I've seen most places discount it to at least $150.

A decent racquet for the beginner or intermediate tennis player. See previous posts about this racquet as there are a lot of happy users of the frame.

I would suggest Wilson Tour Premier tennis balls to fill up your basket to $150. They are a tournament ball being sold at $8/can for 4 balls. That's cheaper than your typical rubbish "Championship" tennis balls. They are grass balls, but they will play alright on hard court but will fluff up and become slower. Downside is the white felt. If you take this into a competition expect a Mosman mum to take issue with the colour. Otherwise actually competition legal.

After further testing I've realised an advanced player will need a fair amount of lead tape or weight to the racquet to keep it stable.

Pretty easy access to power from this racquet. Control is good, but lacking if you hit long strokes/ are an advanced player. Would recommend more control oriented strings like polys or lower powered synthetic gut over multifilament strings.

  • Firstly, not suggesting OP is suss.

However, just note that the store rep has been banned for sockpuppeting this deal a few days ago.

This is a copy of the interaction before the deal was deleted.

Sockpuppeting profile created minutes before the deal:

This is a awesome racket for under $100. It is not as heavy as the RF97 Version. At 290g unstrung weight it will suit a large range of players.
Its a top end Wilson Performance frame. I will be stocking up on this deal….

Welcome to Ozbargain (new user just 6 mins prior to posting your comment) and the OP should be proud that your first ever contribution perfectly counters the criticism from their last deal.
    An amazing coincidence!

Thank you, Chief Inspector Forrester reporting for duty for Ozbargain.
Although the sockpuppeting was very obvious in that previous post…

Well I tried posting this deal as well because I didn't see it posted here.

I've played with this frame and after playing with it more have come to the conclusion that it is fairly average frame.

Advanced players (who actually need multiples of a racquet) really really should look elsewhere. So your critique of the sockpuppet is very spot-on. Nobody should be stockpiling or bulk buying this racquet. This is for the budget player who wants to have a hit on a court with a racquet of some description, not a competition player.

Personally I don't feel like it gives enough control, touch and subtly that "advanced" player frames like the ProStaff 90, Prince Phantom 93p etc offer.

There are in my opinion much better "tweener" frames for people looking to go from beginner to advanced player if you want to spend more. These frames won't become obsolete at higher player levels but are still easy enough to start with. See this post from r/tennis

Otherwise, a Clash 98 or something similar is $220 from TennisOnly and can grow with you to a higher level.

I'm aware that I "recommended" this racquet in my previous deal, I still do here, but it's because of the price point. I've learnt a lot more from r/tennis discord recently about racquets and demoed more extensively.

Appreciate your detailed post and opinion, sounds like you're a very seasoned tennis player!
Btw I didn't mean to side track the comments by my post.

        • Yeah, I guess I was more responding to your quote earlier.

I really hate it when tennis shops and companies etc will say their racquet gives you spin, power, control and is suitable for all players etc because it doesn't help anyone actually pick out a racquet. It's always a compromise

I mean whether it was responding to you or someone else I'd need to flesh out my recommendation and its caveats.

      • I'm also looking at the clash 100. What are the differences?

  • the white balls are very hard too see

    • I've played with the white balls and they do take a little to get used to.

I agree that they are hard(er) to see, but the difference is not too major. Wimbledon was played with white balls until 1984.

Wilson is running a fire sale on the white balls because of low consumer demand.

If you prefer yellow balls, the Tecnifibre XOne ball is $11/can and pretty decent to play with.

      • Wilson has been running it for many months, can get a case from them for $99.

These white balls get dirty very easily, depending on what surface you play. you end up with a basket of different coloured tennis balls.

these are the same balls as the pre-dunlop AO balls, just different colours, very very good balls.

    "Buy In Bulk & Save!
    Buy 2 to 2: Pay $150.00
Buy 4 or more: Pay $125.00"

This doesn't appear to be working at checkout

    • Yes i wanted to buy two for my kids

      • Having thought about it, it's probably the price per racquet based on the original price of $160+

I had my bargain blinders on!
