Cheapest Way to Fix iPhone 11 Pro Max Cracked Screen

Hi Everyone,
My Gf, dropped her iphone from a knee height and smashed the screen.
Touch and display are working fine but screen has millions of cracks on it.

Whats the cheapest way to fix it?
Unfortunately, we opted out for applecare+. Its in a plan not bought outright.

Also, I read few articles saying apple is making harder for third party screen replacement. Referring to this article

Go to several shopping centre mobile repair booths and get quotes.

    Compare this to apples price.

    Pick one.

    Pay.

    Move on.

always get disappointed when your advice isn’t in the form of a bitmap.

Just bit skeptical as per the article on forbes

  • Cheapest way would be to do it yourself, but that's time and labour-intensive. As above, it's better to pay someone reputable to fix it for you and save the headache.

  • some cell phone providers offer an insurance plan. check to see if you're (or girlfriend) are covered.

    • Unfortunately No.
      She is with Vodafone.

  • Pretty much the above. If you're not confident don't DIY. Ask family and friends someone will know someone but the iphone 11… I'm not so sure.

Call / ask till you find a place you're happy with.

    • I could do DIY but was looking for parts couldnt find it at reasonable price.

    replace the gf.

    • Haha.. Knew it this was coming

  • Drops $1,800 phone, wants to save $100-150 on screen repair so considers DIY or shopping centre repair job? Given the age and value of the phone apple replacement @ $529 maintaining warranty is probably well worth it, if its under warranty and a little dinged up they may even just swap it over for a refurb with new battery in a new case for a set fee.

    • I am thinking the same.
However other than on the screen itself, there is no scratches or anything.Immaculate condition
Regretting on not having insurance now

  • I missed the days, when you accidentally dropped your phone, the floor cracked.

That was before Nokia was sold to MS whom ran it into the ground…

  • Take out AppleCare+, keep the smashed phone for 1-2 months and then claim on AppleCare "oh sorry, my screen got cracked just TODAY, can you help me?"

    • I think it needs to be done within 90 days of the purchase

      • +1

Checked their website just now, it's 60 days, didn't know about that.
Have you tried asking inside an Apple store for a quote? It might be a good reference point to know how much you will be saving getting it fixed at a dodgy third-party screen repairer.

        • I checked their website and its $529 for the screen

          • +1

            @fantoo:

            $529 for the screen

Yikes! You can buy a decent Android phone for that much!

            • +1

              @dust: Exactly.
Couple of hundred on top and Can get a s20 with discount codes.

60 days unfortunately but that would have been the best option. You could still ask if just beyond that window.

        • Will try it tomorrow.

Dont understand why these Screen repair are so expensive

          • +2

@fantoo: Apple engineers decided it was a great idea to embed the glass into the metal structure of the phone.
This makes replacing the "screen" actually an almost complete disassembly of the phone and replacing the chasis/frame of the phone.
All this effort so you can have a phone that is 1mm slimmer than what it could be.
            Enjoy!

            • @Blue Cat: looks like an innovative step from apple

            • +1

@Blue Cat: Probably waterproofing as well

              • @Hirolol: Thats another.
I was just checking and they dont cover liquid damage lol.

Says its liquid resistant not liquid proof

              • -1

@Hirolol: Samsung Galaxy S10 has a 3.5mm headphone jack and yet has an actual waterproof rating of IP68 (1.5 meters of water for up to 30 minutes).

IMO it is nothing but a way to make DIY repairs harder for iPhones.

Just imagine if new cars came with glass integrated into a car's chasis.
Cracked windshield? Gotta replace the chasis too now!

Basically - a neat and interesting engineering feat. But practical for real life usage? I don't think so.

  • No portable contents insurance that might cover it?

    • Have you done this before?Any info from anyone who has done this way would be highly appreciated

      • Yes, but a few years ago with and older iPhone. You'd have to check your PDS or call your insurer.

        • any particular one you would recommend?

          • @fantoo: Not really. Like car insurance, it really depends on your own circumstances.

You do need to read the fine print though, one insurer said they wouldnt cover screen breakage if that was the only damage? Which I thought was weird…but perhaps they were getting too many claims…but what's stopping you from dropping it in water afterwards to get around it? 🤷‍♂️

Mine was QBE as a reference. But I regularly switch to whoever has the cheapest premium and reasonable to no excess…right now I'm with Allianz.

  • You can claim it through home contents Insurnace or bank insurance or even work insurance

    • +2

Work insurance? What type of policy would that be? And surely it would only be applicable if it was a work phone being used for work purposes?

  • Ask/ring the numerous mobile phone repairers….. you may be able to buy a secondhand non working phone, and swap the screen
