Decided to pull the trigger. Bought one

Once had a shotgun to my head they said I wasn't worth the bullets

        • +1

Considering a shotgun doesn't use bullets, I'd have to agree

        CUCK

  • Officeworks pricematch?

    • +1

Yeah definitely, if you can find one in stock. Rang up a few stores in Brisbane,no luck :(

      • +4

price match online? It's pretty good pricing and $5 it won't matter much but for someone that is closer to an officeworks…

        • +9

Yeah absolutely! Every dollar counts! We are OZB ;)

          • +4

@Sun77: Hell yeah, 5 bucks is a box of nutrigrain 805g at 1/2price with a bit left over.

  • +9

These are a million times better when you connect them to a PS4 or Xbox controller. So anyone that’s bought one, give it a go!

    • Second this

    • Cool. Thanks for the tip. Difficult to pair with the drone?

      • +16

I assume you just plug it in. With a long-ish cable.

    • That's a cool tip
Didn't know you can do it.
Any other tips that you can share?

Neat little drone - I got mine from Telstra rewards. I had to mod mine with a larger heatsink though because it likes to overheat. I'd like to see how it goes in colder months.

Grabbing the TelloFPV app from the Playstore also gives many more features (custom controls, more info displayed etc) over the stock app.

    • +12

I should also note, if you buy this drone and have overheating issues like crazy like I did, open it up and confirm if you actually have thermal paste contacting the outer shielding and heatsink.

      https://i.imgur.com/gbij7zz.png

On mine, the top blob of thermal paste made contact with the shield, the right chip didn't make contact at all and the one I circled in red was completely missing thermal paste which caused those two bottom chips to never be cooled down effectively. It's meant to make contact with the shield on these three chips as seen here: https://i.imgur.com/Vg0DWTb.png

Nice because of less restrictions than conventional drones due to the weight. Probably the best drone for weight class and good even if you have a full sized DJI drone.

  • +14

Will you guys stop posting gadget that I really don't need and I shouldn't buy!

    • +10
      • Lol you suck, you're tempting me also!

"Having a drone can help you to socialize as it encourages you to get out of the house and go somewhere interesting to get some cool photos."

          • +2

@UrbionPT: True, might even find a girlfriend.

            Bought.

            • +8

@montorola: Yup, I got the DJI FPV, after a few minutes I found my gf, then the police found me…

              • +1

@D3m3ntia: So yesterday, with my new purchase, I went walking with a girl.

Then she noticed me and we both started running together.

            • +2

@montorola: even if they don't know it

    • Buy first, regret later.

  • It looks good not sure to pull the trigger or not. Tempting price for first drone :P

    • I pulled a trigger once, now I just pull my pudding.

  • +3

I paired mine with cheap 3d goggles and a wireless controller. I have a first person view from it's camera in flight which is pretty awesome. Excitement doesn't last too long though, I haven't used for over a year.

    • Which goggles did you get?

      • +2

Stealth VR from EB Games for $29. You put your phone inside them using the Tello app I think. The controller is Gamesir for $49. There is also a hack app to increase the max flight height from 10m to 20M

    • +7

Excitement doesn't last too long though, I haven't used for over a year.

Ah, married life is great isn't it?

  • +3

Yeah, fun for a bit, cool it can do a few 3D tricks, but camera is so poo that you won’t do anything with the photos (ie fb etc). I took mine to Turkey and a few other countries, got a few cool snaps but not very good quality. Pretty sure last time I flew it (over a year ago), there’s an android hack app that lets it fly well beyond its 10m height limit etc.

Before that, there was a funny hack that you could go higher than the 10m height limit by taking off, landing on something higher up, restarting andoing another 10m from that height point.

    • Poo or poor? Same thing, really, I guess…

    • +1

Hm interesting, I didn't know there was a 10m height limit. The TelloFPV app allows up to 30m out of the box if you ever get around to flying it again.

    • +1

The picture quality that bad it's not even worth posting on Facebook?

    • Yeah, definitely meant poo.
Originally I thought the limit was 10m/~30ft, but that might have changed (got mine well before Aus stock, when first launched in HK)
It’s pretty bad - I’ll try and find a pic. But they made have done software upgrades in the past year to help?

      • what are those in the second pic

        • +2

They are natural formations (ancient rivers I think) in Göreme, Cappadocia. Same place you always see on fb of those crazy amount of hot air balloons over the place. One of the best places I’ve visited!
Was too (profanity) to take the Mavic Pro on that trip, but took it most recent trip just to have it confiscated in Kigali, Rwanda at the airport.

          • +4
          • +2

            @Tuttle: Lol @ confiscated. Why?

Sounds like they wanted it for themselves…

            • @montorola: did they return it?

              • +1

@Dotherightthing: Yeah, you have to declare it on arrival into Rwanda. Jail if caught with it (or leaving with one). I was on the fence but decided to declare (had already gone through scanner undetected) and so they took me to a room where I tagged it. There was literally 100 drones in there, mayb 15 Mavic, inspires, everything!
They wanted to know a fair bit about my plans since I had rocked up with a drone.

Anyway, picked it up on the way out (actual room is before security when leaving), all good, but they picked it up on the scanner as I was going through. Started the process of detaining me as I had a drone and no “receipt”. Explained I had the receipt, but had to give it over to have my drone returned.
They kept detaining me, until thankfully a call to the boss in the drone room cleared it up.

Very very glad I declared it!

                • @Tuttle: i wonder why they are banning it? dont they know that we have google earth anyway lol

        • +2

what are those in the second pic

The correct term is Phallictites, they're like Stalagmites, except they grow into a dong-shaped formation.

        • massive rock penis's

      • +3

Thanks for the samples! It's not too bad!

How's the night shots on this?

        • +1

          Nah, no idea.

        • +3

Given the quality of the well lit shots, I probably wouldn't have much hope for the night shots

  • Seriously people buy something with 13 mins working time? 33 I may get one

    • +3

      33min …. and for $98??

Be sure to share here when you find one please.

    • +4

      $19 each extra battery x 2 = $38 for 39 min flying

    • 13 minutes is surprising long when you are flying it. Considering it has a 100m range - basically you fly it up and do whatever you wanna do and survey the area or take pics / videos. My Spark gives about 15 minutes and I usually get 3 flights out of it of 5 min each to just take pics.

  • +2

Ive had one for a year and have had a lot of fun with it and so have the kids. I was using it to document a recent renovation.

Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago while using it, a huge gust of wind blew it into the top of a tree in my neighbours house. Too high and dangerous to get

    • +3

Wait until a storm hits lol

Not fhd.. no sale to me

  • Price matched curious planet before they shutdown. Got the bundle lower than the standalone version Tello. Perfect toy for the little one.

  • Good starter drone.. except I updated to the latest firmware and it's no longer stable. It hovers but veers to the right slightly so it moves. Never stays dead center. I have tried doing a stability reset and still doesn't change anything.

    • Most cheap drones have the ability to trim for this type of movement? If that is not the case here it is a bit of a pain.

      • It does have trim, and it allows you to refine pretty well. At worst you end up with a slight drift in “best trim”. But more than enough to fly around the house.

        • whats this trim business ?

          • @kojihama: Àdjusts the idle speed of propellers so that they all spin uniformly and the unit hovers without too much movement. A button on the remote has this function.

            • @Logical: Hmm we only use the iOS app to control it.. I can't recall there being that function on the app.

    • If its got an optical sensor, they dont hover so well if its got nothing to differentiate. Things like plain carpet dont work well but something like a checkered floor does. Same holds true for even the more expensive DJI drones.

      Also check props.

  • Can take it to 30 metres with the app. You can also create it's own network with a xioami repeater and portable battery to give extended range.
Be careful with this hack ours flew off a few times and we had to run after it . Lucky we had some some space in the paddock.

  • +1

    Thanks OP, bought one.

  • I have this little cool drone. Only annoying issue is the overheating when left on and not moving. When it's flying the air cools it fine. Great features for the price. Camera is decent for this price.

  • Thanks Sun77, bought one.😁

  • +1

Looks like it's gone or they took it down

    • It's way too small for that

        Just got email…

Please be advised that we currently have no stock on hand to fulfil your order. Stock has been ordered directly from our supplier.

Not impressed at all. 5-10days to restock then 5-10 more days to WA, business days too. Poor customer service to say the least.
How many others are now in the same boat?

        • +1

yeah just got the same email too. quite disappointed as i thought they have plenty in stock.

          • +1

            • @Grish: Agree.

Had plenty in stock, confirmed by salesperson.

              Nek minnit:

        • I got the no stock email as well.
