Just went to download and realized its now gone free.

  • Wow, Sandboxie brings back fond memories. Did not realise it is still around.

Windows has this as a built-in option now

Windows 10 Pro & Enterprise only

A few things to note with the built-in Windows option.

      1. If you run VMware workstation the built-in container breaks that pretty good.
      2. You have no access to the local OS. E.g. if you just watch to spin up an already installed app on your desktop in a Sandbox you cannot. You need to reinstall the app within the Sandbox.
      3. Sandboxie can have as much or as little access to the underlying OS as you want.
      4. Sandboxie will allow you to spin up many Sandboxies with different configurations. E.g. 1 for testing malware, another for whatever.
      5. Sandboxie doesn't play well with the latest versions of Windows 10. The whole product has gone to shit since Sophos bought it. The only good thing they did was make it free, but it has otherwise become neglected. Hopefully they come good on their promise to open source it so we can fix it for them…
      6. Windows Sandbox can have a significant impact on your system.
      7. Windows Sandbox will destroy everything in it when you shut it down, so there is no persistence.

Windows Sandbox is pretty cool and a step in the right direction. But its a bit painful to use in my opinion because of the lack of persistence… I still prefer VMware Workstation+Sandboxie over Windows Sandbox which just doesn't have the features it needs.

because of the lack of persistence

… that would mean it wasn't a sandbox.

Not sure what you mean by "wasn't a sandbox"?.
A Virtual Environment is its own environment (Sandboxed) and in turn if you turn it off and then back on, anything you did would still be there normally. Kind of like HyperV on Win10 (which is also free). The Win10 Sandbox however doesn't save anything when turned off hence not good for ongoing testing.

Sandboxie however does this on the fly without having to create Win Virtual Machines (which require time and PC resources). It also allows one to continue to run apps from there as long as one wants to if that makes sense? Its quick and easy for the most part.

      • The Windows Sandbox I’ve found useful except for testing software that requires a reboot to work. A reboot clears the Sandbox so it is impossible to test this type of software in Windows SB. The development team are aware of this and working to provide extra functionality in the future.

    • Windows 10X will pretty much have this native for when you want to run Win32 programs. They run in a container.
Unfortunately it's only for new devices, specifically dual screen experiences, to begin with.

      • …….but as noted above. Windows Sandbox will destroy everything in it when you shut it down, so there is no persistence.

  • Used to be free and then went paid I think.

  • I was using the free version for a while, then it wouldnt work with Chrome about 1-2yrs back, forcing me to stop using it.

Sandboxie was made free in September last year. https://community.sophos.com/products/sandboxie/f/forum/1151… Sophos has plans to make it open source.

    • Yeap, it was listed here in Sept. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/482979
Not sure why that listing expired as it free forever. Decent software and great for checking dodgy Websites/Email links or checking/testing software. Once finished one just clears the Sandbox and then no traces are contained on local PC.

  • Highly recommended:

1.Small installation footprint, unlike so many bloated applications these days

    1. Use it for: testing new programs before deciding to keep them; portable installations; running exes from dubious sources eg keygens

These is a right click shell option added to various types of files; just right click and Choose "Run Sandboxed". There is an option to allow or block all Sandboxed content from being able to access the internet (most malware phones home).

  • One shortcoming of this program that I've noticed is that not 100% of applications run properly sandboxed. Not to understate how useful this program is when it works, just don't expect too much.
