Overseas Travel - Are You Booked & Are You Still Going?

Hello =)

We have seen a dozen or so threads about upcoming booked travel and what should I do in light of this virus that is going around the world? We all have read, seen, or heard the news - multiple times per day - and have an idea what the coronavirus is, and then we reflect on how it could impact those who are travelling (or not). We could debate and argue this 'until the cows come home' and still have no resolution in what is still a dynamic virus situation.

The direction of this thread (well I hope anyway) is to see, in factual data, of who are booked, when and where are you going and IF you are still going? [prefer not to debate pros/cons of this virus]

Hopefully, we can use this format

  1. When I am going?
  2. Where I am going?
  3. Am I still going?

I'll start off with my situation:-

4 to 18 March
Thailand (Koh Samui / Koh Phangan)
Yes + wife

8-21 April
Thailand (Bangkok), Cambodia (Phnom Penh) and Singapore
Yes + wife

14-19 May
Melbourne
Yes

11 July - 3 August
France (Paris) and TBD european cities.
Yes + wife, however my parents may cancel if situation gets worse.

3 to 18 August
Singapore and Japan
Yes + wife

            • @billyb67: https://www.westpac.com.au/content/dam/public/wbc/documents/…

Not sure but I'm pretty sure pandemics are covered on this. Unless I read wrong which is entirely possible.

Second clause is a personal thing which isn't Corona-related and wouldn't apply to anyone else, sry.

              • @CMH: Given that the insurance is provided by Allianz who when I called were absolutely brutal in saying that there was no cover, I'd take the stripped down Westpac PDS with a grain of salt.

As always, if in doubt call the issuer. You'll likely get bounced around a bit.. I ended up getting referred to the mob that Allianz use to get a final position.

                • @bobbieb: Perhaps, but I've got a backup so I'm fine either way.

Would still prefer them to refund directly rather than having to go through insurance though.

      • That's just the cancellation fees from retreats, accommodation, tours and activities I had booked. If I waited longer I would risk not getting anything back and would be out of pocket $8k instead of $5k. I have not cancelled the flights yet and hoping I can get something back there. Travel insurance have also rejected my claim.

        • +1

holy crap. I feel for you mate, hopefully you'll get 100% back from the airlines.

          bloody cancellation fees

    • Very responsible! 👍🏻

  • I am going to Fiji from 26th April. Everything booked insurance was taken on 12th Feb so not getting coverage for Corona. As of now not planning to call it off.

    • What will you do when you return, at the moment It is 14 days self regulated isolation. so you took an extra 2 weeks annual leave or is your work paying for your isolation ?

      • Have requested to push my travel by a month i.e. Apr to May. Fiji is waiving off booking fees, so fingers crossed booking is changed with not much costs. I hope situation improves by May.

        • Just got a message from my travel agent they don't anticipate travel to commence in next 6 months so asking me to suggest a date 6 months later.

  • Hearing that there will be a complete travel ban to Europe imposed on Aussies in the next 24 hours. Up until May 1st at this stage.

    • I wonder if I can make it home or they will send me to Christmas island lmao

  • You guys don’t think Australia might close borders? might be difficult to get back. Flights rescheduled. Might need to quarantine overseas. Might need to quarantine when return.

Even if u do not catch the virus, it could be a travellers worst nightmare.

Sometimes we just have to cut our losses. Lots of good travel deals atm but no way… I have written this yr off as no travelling. We only have japan in dec for ski trip but if the time comes and it’s still not safe, I have no hesitation cancelling.

    • I bloody hope they do, that way all costs for my holiday will be refunded

  • Hadn't really considered that my trip may be impacted until this week.

Going to Peru in mid May/June, transiting through NZ and Chile.
Booked all flights, including domestic, and Inca trail / Machu Pichu permits.

Looks as though my travel insurance covers epidemics if DFAT up if to Do Not Travel, but not entirely sure.

    What do you guys think?

    • +1

      You won't be going.

    • Update: Inca trail treks have been cancelled up to April 30, and my operator is not offering good terms for cancellation/postponing for bookings after that date. (ie, lose 50% of your deposit)
LATAM is only offering flight changes up to May 31st, which doesn't cover our flights either.

Will have to sit tight for another month.

  • Booked early July to Phuket via Kuala Lumpur (teenage son and myself) - at this stage still going. Have not booked accommodation - will wait until closer to travel date.

Booked late September to Bali via Kuala Lumpur (teenage son and myself) - still going but bought Cover More's cancel for any reason insurance through NRMA online.

    • Malaysia closed its doors to anyone flying in effective today. Hopefully the situation clears up by july for you.

  • I’ve got a one-month trip to the US booked for the end of April. At the moment I’m still going but we’ll see what happens. I think the situation here and in the US is going to worsen but I’m six weeks out and I think that’s potentially enough time for things to get better again.

I have some friends who are supposed to go to New York in a couple of weeks and they have to cancel. Lots of NYC attractions are shut so there’s no point in them going. They bought Hamilton tickets for $350 each but the show was cancelled last week and their money refunded. And unfortunately most of their accomodation was booked non-refundable so they’re out quite a bit of money.

I booked everything refundable besides the flights, but thanks to Virgin’s rebookable flights policy I’ll be out $100 max if I have to reschedule the trip. But like I said at the moment I’m optimistic that I’ll be able to go in six weeks’ time.

    • +2

this is another point if you still go on your trip will you still be able to see everything you want to see?
disneyland closed, NBA cancelled, museums and stage shows closed

p.s. with your friends non-refundable accomodation have they asked about rescheduling instead?

  • -2

I have a flight to wellington, NZ flying 20.03.2020 and returning 23.03.2020. Question is, how is this "self isolation" being monitored?? Who checks up?
Can customs have authority to question when flying out from NZ back to Oz?

  • OP, so you will self quarantine (until March 30th?) when you get back on Wednesday ?

And then fly out again on April 8th?

    Good luck with that.

    • We had always intended to self isolate upon returning with/without government 'direction' and had made arrangements to work from home prior to leaving for our trip.

In any instance our circumstances have changed and our April trip is now cancelled, but our current trip has been extended by a week - and we are now in Bangkok.

  • 21 April to 5 May
    Tokyo Japan
Booked with ANA but would like to cancel and hopefully receive a refund. ANA are allowing cancellations for tickets booked with the following conditions

    Ticket numbers starting with 205
Date of issue Tickets issued up to and including February 28,2020
Boarding Date Bording from February 28 to April 5,2020

I hope they extend the boarding date further into April and May, it's not like many people want to travel any time soon.

    • Where did you find this information?

I am also hoping to get a refund from ANA, my travel date is end of May.

    • I'm very close to your dates, still planning on going though.

    • Mine is at the beginning of june. cancellation now is about $450 of a fare that cost $750

      so I will wait eagerly

    • +1

The new travel ban now should allow us to cancel for free?

      • +1

This is what i'm waiting for…

  • +2

    https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-03-18/virgin-australia-grou…

VA’s decision to suspend all international flights does it; my April-May trip to the US is cancelled. I’ll look at rescheduling it for July or August if we’re past the worst of the pandemic and the dollar improves a bit by then.

Looks like the government has made our decisions for us:

    TRAVEL BAN UPGRADED

The travel ban for every Australian is being upgraded to level four – do not travel – for the entire world.

"That is the first time that has ever happened in Australia's history," Mr Morrison said.

"For those who are thinking of going overseas in the school holidays, don't. Don't go overseas. The biggest risk we have had and the biggest incidents of cases we have had has been from Australians returning from overseas, from many countries that you wouldn't have expected that to be a source."

    • Surely noone is stupid enough to go after this?
If so, don't cry home when you are blocked from returning or get infected overseas.

    • +1

Personally, I think we're rapidly passing the point where travel bans contribute anything meaningful.

"For those who are thinking of going overseas in the school holidays, don't. Don't go overseas. The biggest risk we have had and the biggest incidents of cases we have had has been from Australians returning from overseas, from many countries that you wouldn't have expected that to be a source."

That's not to say that you'd have all that much fun if you did travel. You're just as likely to be subject to the same sort of isolation & quarantine rules at your destination, plus you'd have the additional risk that your travel-insurance will give you zero coverage during a travel advisory of level 4.

      • I agree fully, insurance wise if you had left Australia prior to any restriction I doubt your travel insurance is automatically voided. They may try to void any claims especially corona related but if you sprained your ankle going to a rooftop bar, then I think they will cover your trip to an hospital ED.

    • +1

Yet he tells us not to panic and if you hoard you are un-australian.

I can tell you what is un-australian, let me think about a time where someone - who supposedly the leader of the country - abscondedd Australia to go to Hawaii during the worst bushfire in history.

Now upon the same said person returning, forcing handshakes upon distressed people and then pretending they were sooks. LIke that that he tried to shake the hand of a volunteer who refused and the he said "he must be tired" yet the man actually had his home burnt down.

Touching someone without their consent is assault, if you did that to a children, expect the internet would brand you a monster.

  • Going to see if i can cancel my flights for May (Europe)

    • +1

Sit tight and wait for the airline to suspend its services to Australia in a week or two.

My return flight home is completely full, there is like some economy seats that are selling for like $1200 one way!

The same flight going back out of Australia, looks very empty.

Any sensible airline will suspend services in the next week or two given there is absolutely very little passengers flying out of Australia.

      • Yeah I haven't contacted anyone yet - I don't even know what order to go in;

Airline direct or travel agent (his location of Flight Centre closed before all of this virus stuff) or insurer

        • Normally you contact the business / website agent or their parent company / call centre from you booked your ticket from;

But given you are travelling in May most will prefer you to call closer towards your travel date as the people who are travelling in the next few days need to be prioritised.

That said, they might reopen the borders / things might improve etc by May so hence that is also another reason they want you to hold off until closer to your travelling date.

          • @TheMindsetTraveller: Yeah that's true. The whole point was to go to Eurovision… which is now cancelled.

I hope they are nice with refunds lol

I am holding off but scared of forgetting as I've cancelled my leave from work already

Also waiting for Virgin Australia to announce if they will cancel my domestic trip for Easter

  • -5

What a shame all the under 35 renters can't go on their holiday lol.

    • +2

and nothing wrong with uner 35 renters who can't go on their holiday.

One day we will leave this world behind and as we approach that, we will refect on the things we did in our lives but focus more on the things that we didn't do … don't regret anything, make the dash between the two important dates of your life , DOB and Date of Death, make that dash count.

      • -3

Good luck when you get to retirement/pension age and have to still pay rent for the next 30 years.

        • LOL and nothing wrong with that too

I have never seen anyone going to their own funeral with a trailer behind their hearse.

        • it depends more on how much they earn than their age. There are under 35s who can travel and own a house. There are also over 35s who don't travel and still pay rent.

You only get a short time here on this world. It would be a real waste if you didn't get to see it.

      • -2

Great attitude, obviously don’t have kids. Typical under 35 live for me today attitude.

    • @bobsam: Overgeneralising much?

    • @bobsam what an idiot

      • Goose

  • Does anyone know what happens if travel booking sites / airlines go bust? Will my credit card cover it?

I have a very cheap airasia flight in August and got a really good deal on refundable hotel booking for it, I still plan on going if the border is open and I don't want to cancel the booking since the AUD has tanked and it was a good deal. But if my credit card won't cover the accommodation site going bust I think I better cancel the hotel at least.

    • Had that happen to me once, about 8 years ago though, where the airline went bust. Was able to get my money back via a CC chargeback.

  • saffa in may. Definitely not going anymore. Just waiting on Qantas to do more about the cancellations/refunds seeing as they've grounded their international fleet.

  • My Singapore Airlines flight on 28/03/20 is not cancelled as yet. Is this normal?

    • Yes, even though non-Australians are not allowed into the country at the moment / and not many Australians leaving Australia, there might be enough demand to justify keeping this service operating for the very short term (I am thinking in within two weeks tops).

I know for example my flight home tonight with Thai Airways, Bangkok to Sydney is near full (as Australians scramble on flights back home before airlines start suspending services). If anyone wanted to purchase a ticket, it is full fare economy rate (only Y buckets for those FF nerds) - think $1500 for economy one way. The same plane that leaves Sydney looks very empty (given the DNT advice).

When it doesn't make any economical sense to operate these flights, that's when they get cancelled. I know my Singapore flight for 8 April has been cancelled, got an email yesterday but I wasn't planning to go in light of the new travel advice in any case.

      • Enjoy your 14 days lockdown :)

        • -1

The pleasure is all mine. With or without government advisory, I had already planned to stay home and avoid people anywhere. At least I get to travel, where did you last go?

          • @TheMindsetTraveller: NZ January. Family Wedding. As a surfer i have been places most people wouldn't even think of :) For one Southern Maldives Atolls, no resorts, tourists, shopping etc, Locals living on islands only, they never see any foreigners but surfers.
1 hour flight south of Male then live on a boat and travel between islands/surf breaks. Untouched paradise.

Looking at this your are not travelling just following the herd lol. Get off the beaten track and see some real world places how it once was and still is. Probably never been out of an Australian city.
Parents? Guess they are funding you haha.

            When I am going?
            Where I am going?
            Am I still going?
I'll start off with my situation:-

            4 to 18 March
Thailand (Koh Samui / Koh Phangan)
            Yes + wife

            8-21 April
Thailand (Bangkok), Cambodia (Phnom Penh) and Singapore
            Yes + wife

            14-19 May
            Melbourne
            Yes

            11 July - 3 August
France (Paris) and TBD european cities.
Yes + wife, however my parents may cancel if situation gets worse.

            3 to 18 August
            Singapore and Japan
            Yes + wife

            • +1

              @[Deactivated]: @bobsam

Wow, you went to NZ for a wedding. And you love to surf, great! you win at surfing. I gave you an upvote for that because I don't surf, never cared for it, so never was interested - that's me.

But then you have formed an opinion, based on my opening thread post, that you know me and my exact travels past, present and future - and how it is funded or maybe not.

The truth is you don't know a thing about me or my travels, nor does that matter, the only thing you know is that I had three trips booked in 2020 - that's all. It doesn't reveal anything else, who I am flying, where I am staying, who am I meeting nor what I am doing and why I am doing it, or even if I am going off the beaten path that you think is the holy grail of travel, is village a few hours drive out of the main cities off the beaten path? but then again, you have formed an opinion, not truth, not fact, just your opinion.

  • I'm still on the fence whether I should change my travel dates since my flight has not been cancelled yet.

  • Just got this a few minutes ago from Jetstar

We’re sorry to let you know that your flight/s on booking have been cancelled and we are unable to accommodate you on an alternative service.

We’ve made this decision in response to the evolving Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, including various government-imposed travel restrictions beyond our control.
As a result, we’re offering customers a Jetstar credit voucher to the full value of their untraveled booking.

Due to the high volume of calls to our contact centre, the fastest and easiest way to secure your voucher is to go to Manage My Booking and follow these steps:
Enter your booking number and last name
    Select ‘view options’
    Select ‘request reimbursement’
Select the applicable flights and click ‘reimbursement summary’
    Confirm your request
The credit voucher can be redeemed up to the value stated on the voucher in one booking only within 6 months of issue, for travel on Jetstar within 12 months of the booking date. A fare difference, if any, will apply.

You will receive your voucher within 2 weeks of making the request.

If you need to, you can chat with us online about alternative options that are available to you. As we are currently experiencing long wait times, you can also Ask Jess our virtual assistant to understand these options. Just type ‘Network Adjustments’ for all the information you need without having to wait in a queue.

You can also access information about the Australian Consumer Law on our website.

    Contact your insurer:

If you have a travel insurance policy which covers incidents like this and plan on making a claim, this letter could be a good one to include.
We’d like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by this announcement and we hope to welcome you on one of our flights in the future.
    Yours sincerely,
    Jenny Armor
    Head of Customer

Surely under the ACL if Jetstar can't provide a service, I'm entitled to a full refund!

    • From ACCC

If your travel is cancelled the ACCC expects that you will receive a refund or other remedy, such as a credit note or voucher, in most circumstances.

However, if your travel is cancelled due to government restrictions, this impacts your rights under the consumer guarantees.

You may still be entitled to a refund under the terms and conditions of your ticket.

You should contact the business directly to request a refund or other remedy such as a credit note or voucher.

The ACCC encourages all businesses to treat consumers fairly in these exceptional circumstances.

Seems like you have LESS rights now at DNT than the level before it.

Lol, as if anyone is going anywhere, it’s all over kids. Time to do the hard yards.

    • Trolling much?

      • Did you get home?

        • Are you refering to me? Yes I arrived this morning, so did my checked luggage of 120 rolls of toilet papers. Got lots of stares and looks at the airport, one worker said 'smart move' another said 'sell it outside'

          • -1

@TheMindsetTraveller: Lol, hahah, I’ve heard it all now. You know it’s made in Australia and there is plenty to go around if morons stop stock piling, guess that’s you.
You can’t be a real Aussie. Hand in your passport.

            • @[Deactivated]: If you think I am worried about coronavirus, generally speaking I am not (and you should see the comments I get). Lots of panicked people out there so I should stop talking about my perspective on this virus.

Do I practice and advocate that everyone practices excellent hygeine practices, distance separation, being super aware if one might be sick and self isolation strategies, then yes.

120 roll of toilet paper this morning? Here's the photo https://ibb.co/6skFh6r

Why did I do it? for kicks; first class passenger checks in 120 rolls of toilet paper.

      • Nope its fact.

This whole post is mute as nobody's going anywhere….

    • mute?

        Moo. It’s like a cow’s opinion. It just doesn’t matter, it’s moo.

  • KL/Bali late April: NO. (Air Asia cancelled SYD-KUL)
    Langkawi: July: HOPE SO.
KL/Bali: October: trying to replace Cancelled April trip: HOPE SO.

  • My Qantas flights flying out 01/04 is still shown as "confirmed". I know it would be definitely cancelled because Qantas grounded all its international flights.
What's the procedure for this? Should I wait for Qantas to contact me?

    • If you booked directly through Qantas, you should be able to manually cancel for a voucher using the website.

If you used a third party website or travel agent, you need to contact them directly to take up whatever they're offering.

Here's the section from the Qantas email I received off the back of the grounding:

We are currently working through plans to ensure we have suitable options available for everyone, including providing new flight details where possible for impacted domestic customers and processing a flight credit for all other customers from early next week.

Please standby and wait to hear from us before changing your booking. We'll be contacting anyone whose flight has been impacted over the next week to let you know your options.

If your flight was booked through a travel agency or third-party website and is impacted by the above network changes, you will need to contact this company directly from early next week to obtain your credit voucher or make booking changes.

      • Qantas is issuing a credit voucher option or refund option. Does anyone know if it will be a FULL refund?

        • I spoke to Qantas this morning for my cancelled flight out on the 28th and it is a full refund. Their processing time at this stage is 6 weeks thou. The woman did try to convince me to take the voucher instead but I think they're fairly use to people wanting refunds.

          • @Fever4shakin: thanks for replying. I have just processed the refund option and confirm it is a full refund.

  • Has anyone kept or prebooked tickets towards the end of 2020 (or early next year), betting this will all blow over by then? I'm assuming when that time comes, everyone will be scrambling for their "long overdue" holidays and airlines have no reason to offer discounts.

    • no way that would just be silly. Could be dead before then.

    • I think a lot of people must have done this because when I look at flights to Europe in September on Virgin, all the cheaper fare levels are already sold out. Which is one of the reasons why a credit voucher is a poor option for me as I'll probably need to pay a fare difference as well.

  • +5

Well this aged well, I hope people understand that we're in this situation because people looked at numbers and thought 'oh they're quite low, I should be alright' and went around spreading it. Even if your trip was cancelled, it's your mindset that got us into this situation in the first place. The idea of only cancelling when things get bad is ridiculous because that is what spreads it.

  • I'm still deciding if I should travel. Will be going from my bedroom to the living room later today. Tough decision.

  • +3

Looking back on this thread hilarious. Aged like fine milk.

    • I wonder how OP's holiday to Cambodia and Thailand went…

      • I live in Thailand, unless you are a citizen atm you can not enter.

        There is also 14day quarantine.

If he made it, nothing is open, no alcohol and we have curfew.

Domestic flights are starting slowly this week.

When everything opens again many bussinesses have closed permanently already.

  • +1

We have a holiday booked at the end of the year, short flight to Sydney, then a cruise to Fiji. We've previously been on the Diamond Princess two years ago, and it was brilliant. At this stage, we're holding off cancelling our trip because we want to see how things look in June. Then we'll decide. But we've already paid off over $6000 of the trip and if we cancel we'll probably lose it all. If it's cancelled on us, we'll hopefully receive refunds or credits.

Edit: actually, if we cancel by the end of June, I'll get back all the money paid on the cruise, but the flights and hotel booking probably not.

I'm trying to convince my husband that if we end up cancelling the cruise, we could spend two weeks in Sydney instead, but he'd rather cancel it entirely and go in our camper trailer somewhere. By the end of the year, I really hope that things are much closer to normal.

    • +2

"Normal" this virus wont be leaving us soon….

    • Just to add - flights are with Virgin :( Not that likely to get my money back there, or the flights. I don't think our travel insurance will cover the failure of Virgin. But there is still time for them to come out the other side. At the moment I haven't cancelled anything.

  • Need to leave to overseas to Europe in June-July, interesting to know when they open internation flights?

    • Magic 8-Ball says "all signs point to yes"

    • Not a chance. I'm still thinking that there is little chance we'll be going away at the end of the year.

  • My trip to Europe is still booked.

Called travel insurance company, don't know if the chick was having a bad day, but she implied that I can't claim my flights on travel insurance. Flights booked in 2019 before covid happened. Flights scheduled for May. Complimentary Westpac Amex travel insurance is what I'm covered under. My understanding of the PDS is that I should be covered..?

Can get a full travel credit with Flight Centre (redeem by end of 2021) or China Southern (to be used in 6 months on a booking).

Any suggestions or ideas? Ideally I'd love a full refund but due to the stress of work (insanely busy due to covid) and also mobile number issues (hi ombudsman) I don't think i have the energy to fight for it.

My whole trip was booked on the basis of attending Eurovision and I am hesitant to travel via China and don't know if I'll actually want to attend Eurovision in 2021.
