Irrigation System - Which is best?

Hi,

I am trying to set this up in my garden and was heading towards "Dripping system" for my trees until i read and watched a YouTube video stating that dripping system to the trees would kill it and it suggesting other methods!

Just want to check if anyone got any experience about this, will the dripping system works for trees?

The trees i have are fruits and some gardenia and Jasmine.

Thanks

  • gardenia and jasmine are so hardy I don't even water mine. they still alive and flower just rely on the rain even in Sydney

    fruit trees however is different.

    • Hmm if this is the case, mine doesn't flower at all and when it rain for a the whole week here in Sydney, they flowered!

I believe there are three elements to Gardenia & Jasmine:

      • Need water when in summer
      • The soil
      • The nutrition

My only concern is are they living when i plant them on top of a clay soil? I dig about 30 CM, put a fertilised soil and then plant them but they not producing!

Few more than your three elements.

That clay soil also is a problem - it can stop them from spreading their roots properly/deeply. I'd look into that.

        • Gypsum, compost and elbow grease. Work that clay into black gold.

        • Wow thanks for that really :)

        • "Extreme weather – Temperature extremes, either too hot or too cold, can also prevent blooming or cause buds to drop. For example, if you want to know to how to get blooms on gardenia, temperatures should be between 65 and 70 F. (18-21 C.) during the day and between 60 and 63 F. (15-17 C.) during the night."

Sydney weather in Summer can get up to 50 C

        • Yer…. we have 20cm top soil then it goes pure clay. Best to dig it up after it rains. Took me 2 hours to get it to 50cm deep with a pick axe to plant a fruit tree otherwise yer the roots won’t expand much.. heavy naturally fertiliser might loosen the clay over time but gypsum willl def help ;)

  • +1

Weeping hose is best. You do not loose anywhere near as much water through evaporation and runoff.

Also, perpetually damp top layer attracta fungus, mould and harmful bacteria. If you're going to run drippers, make sure they are prpviding sufficient wager without being perpetually on.

    • I read about Weeping hose and how good they are, issue is that they will provide water around the soil and that will allow weed to grow!

Thanks for your advise, much appreciated

      • If u use pure organic compost u will get significantly less weeds. Applied with a mulch also helps

  • I set these up in our garden and everything has been growing well. Put it on a timer set for around 10 min a day.
