How to keep Velocity status

Hi,

I’ve recently made two round the world trips in the one year (sick family, this was the cheapest way to travel)
If I’m being honest I doubt I’ll be getting on a plane in the next year however due to these trips we have been upgraded to silver status and I’d like to keep it to be able to use the features I earned.
It’s says you need to earn status credits or make 4(?) eligible flights in 12months to maintain this status.

Is there a work around? The letter stated something about transferring points from family. Is it an option to transfer some of my kids then back again?
Single mum with 3 kids. We all received the upgrade. Do the little ones still need the same membership level to access the lounges etc?

Thanks in advance for any advice

  • It’s not the points you need but status credits. You can pool your status credits, if you set this up before you fly.
IMO I don’t think it’s worth chasing if you don’t fly much.

It's not a matter of earning status credits OR four flights, you have to do both - so from your anniversary date (the date you gained Silver status), you need to earn 200 status credits and make four eligible flights in order to retain Silver.

Points have no bearing on status, it is status credits you need to earn and you can pool from one family member to another to get one person to maintain status. This is set up via the Velocity website - see this page for a full explanation on how it all works https://experience.velocityfrequentflyer.com/the-basics/memb… but a few points to note. When you arrange to "pool" from one family member to another, only the status credits and point transfer across - the eligible flights don't- and you cannot transfer the status credits back again. All members in the family pool must live at the same address. Silver status gives two single use lounge passes per year - if the kids have the same status, then they could access the lounge on the same basis, but I think you need to be Gold status or above (or a paid lounge member) to be able to "guest" children in. I don't have kids so unsure on that (so have never had to worry about it when accessing lounges) but I'm sure others who know more about it will be able to advise.

  • Unless you spend millions using your flybuys card the only way to earn status credits is to fly.

And its status credits PLUS 4 eligible flights.

Probably should have set up family pooling before that way one or two of you would have achieved silver or gold but if you are all silver now probably too late.

For virgin domestic lounges they let all the kids in free but for international lounges a kid will count as a guest.

  • I know this is too late for your case (and of course, the least of your worries when flying around the world for ill relatives), but if you had your 3 kids Family Pooling to you before all the trips last year, you could have reached Gold status or perhaps even the top-tier Platinum status.

If you ever fly with all your kids on Virgin Australia, Singapore Airlines or other partner airlines, make sure you set this up in advance. Might as well take advantage of the situation.

With regards to your current situation, you will each need 200 Status Credits and 2 eligible flights (not 4) to maintain Silver.

If you're only interested in maintaining your Silver status faster and let the kids lapse, get them to Family Pool to you. On your next travels, each of you would only need to earn 50 Status Credits. You will get the full 200 needed and potentially maintain Silver.

For reference, 50 status credits would require about 4 short domestic flights on Economy Elevate fares (e.g. Melbourne-Sydney-Cairns return), or a two longer domestic flights to/from Perth also in Economy Elevate.

    • Yes indeed, it is 2 flights, not 4 - I've been maintaining Gold status for the last 5-6 years (alas, not the case now, and am dropping down the ranks), so had the four flights requirement stuck in my head LOL

What does silver actually give you with virgin? Slightly cheaper lounge annual access? 1-2 free lounge passes? Slight increase in point earning ability….. I wouldn't be losing any sleep over losing silver.

  • You won't get the value out of what you invest into chasing status.

  • Thanks so much everyone.

It’s so bloody annoying because we reached silver while in the US and despite having earned double the baggage allowance they still gave me a hard time about our baggage!
(4 suitcases destroyed during the trip so just put all our stuff in 3 bags over 4 of us and still made me transfer into different bags.

Although we don’t “plan” on flying soon we never know and would like to keep the status if we do. We have family in Qld So that’s always on the cards.

I think I did set up family pooling but we all still have separate memberships. Maybe that was a mistake.

Big lesson learned. ALWAYS check with ozbargain first!!

So if I use the points for flights will those flights earn status credits?
